Mission Statement

The Poway Academy of Learning is committed to accelerating the academic potential of each student by providing a program and services individualized to the needs of each student.

Program Description

The Poway Academy of Learning, a school within a school, provides intensive academic programs de-signed to meet each student’s indi-vidual needs in grades three through grade twelve.

The Poway Academy of Learning provides mainstreaming and inte-gration opportunities with age ap-propriate peers. Small group in-struction emphasizes individual strengths that lead the student to-ward completion of graduation re-quirements..

Support Services

Ancillary services available to support individual education programs include:

  • Speech and Language Services
  • DIS Counseling
  • Assistive Technology
  • Keyboarding
  • Occupational Therapy

Eligibility

Enrollment is based upon assessment and identification of students who quali-fy under Federal and/or State criteria for Special Education and related services. The profile of a student who is successful in the PAL Program has a high cognitive ability and is capable of completing core academic requirements yet cannot demonstrate proficiency in the large group settings. These students typically demonstrate one or more of the follow-ing:

  • Attention deficit/hyperactivity
  • Visual/auditory processing difficulty
  • Poor motor integration
  • Limited social skills

Students are accepted on a case-by-case basis following evaluation by the Poway Special Education Department and recommendation by a student's IEP team.

Technology

 

Students will have access to the core curriculum and supplemental materials. In addition, students will have available to them alterna-tive means to meet their individual needs through the use of assistive technology. Services and programs include up-to-date software such as internet access, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, Type to Learn, Write:OutLoud, and Draft Builder.

Staffing

The Poway Academy of Learning consists of highly skilled and cre-dentialed professionals; educators with expertise in the field of special education.

Parents

The Poway Academy of Learning recognizes the value of parent in-volvement. Parents are encouraged to participate in and to provide feedback to the Program. Newslet-ters and grade reports for each class are posted on Learning Point weekly, notifying parents of the classroom lessons and activities.
