Poway Unified Schools Maintain High Rankings in 2008
Print Version

On May 21, the California Department of Education released the results of the 2007-2008 State and Similar School Rankings for all public schools.  Poway Unified maintained high levels of performance in the Academic Performance Report (APR) led by gains at the elementary level that included five schools achieving 10/10 state and similar school rankings.  The results reported are from tests taken by students in the Spring, 2008.  All PUSD comprehensive high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools continue to exceed the target of 800 which the state set for all schools to reach by the year 2014.

On the state rankings, PUSD elementary middle, and high schools maintained their high rankings. Twenty-three PUSD schools receiving a state rank of “10” thereby earning a place among the state’s top 10% include:  Adobe Bluffs, Canyon View, Chaparral, Creekside, Deer Canyon, Highland Ranch, Los Peñasquitos, Monterey Ridge, Painted Rock, Park Village, Rolling Hills, Shoal Creek, Stone Ranch, Sundance, and Turtleback elementary schools, Bernardo Heights, Black Mountain, Mesa Verde, Oak Valley, and Twin Peaks middle schools, and Poway, Rancho Bernardo, and Westview high schools.

The  five schools earning 10/10 state and similar school rankings include: Canyon View, Deer Canyon, Los Peñasquitos, Rolling Hills, and Sundance. Twenty-one out of 33 schools received Similar School Rankings of 7 or higher. Since 1999, Los Peñasquitos Elementary has achieved 10/10 status five times, doing so in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. Rolling Hills and Sundance elementary schools have achieved 10/10 status during the last three consecutive years: 2006, 2007, and 2008.

“PUSD is one of the few school districts our size in the state with all schools over 800.  These outstanding results are a tribute to the students, parents, and staff,” said Don Phillips, PUSD Superintendent.
