1930s
Week #1

Harkins-Slocomb/MCHS

Lab day 12/19-20

Your Gatsby website project is due today. We will discuss the dance's expectations and review what time to come set up, etc.

We rehearsed the charleston and the fox trot, and we learned to swing dance.

Bring your biography pass, your food or decoration item, and your costume with you to school on Friday for the dance. Show up to the multi-purpose room at the start of lunch to set up. Remember that if you want to earn extra credit for the costume, you need to check in with me before school and at snack!

Today you will dance at least 16 dances during our Dance Across the Decades. You will also mingle so that you can report about at least three personalities from the 1920s, the 1930s and the 1940s. Remember that you must stay in character throughout the dance!

Friday 12/21

Complete the Dance Across the Decades evaluation and e-mail it to me by 7am on Monday, Jan. 7th.

HAPPY WINTER BREAK! You have no homework over the break, but today's assignment is due when we return.

Monday 1/8

Separately, e-mail me a list of 6 people who you'd like to work with for the final exam group project and the name of one person who you would prefer not to work with. If you don't give me six names (from either/both classes), I will not guarantee that you will be in a group with any of those people. If you list more than one person whom you'd prefer not to work with, I will ignore all the names on the list. I will do my best to place you in a group with at least one person you request, and I will do my best to avoid placing you in a group with the person with whom you request not to work with. E-mail me your list by 7am on Tuesday.

Today we begin looking at the Great Depression in literature. Remember that people were losing their land during this time period, and they were searching for jobs so they could survive. They had to migrate from the middle states-- many to California--to find work. Before you read about the history, read the comparison to life for migrant workers today. The article is entitled, "Migrant Workers in Washington State: a Boon to the Tree Fruit Industry"

When you finish reading the story, create a timeline of the events. Summarize the key information as you outline your work. You need to complete this assignment individually-- and you should not copy anything word-for-word from the article. This timeline is due e-mailed to me by 7am tomorrow, Tuesday, 1/8 or in person to me before school.

Tuesday 1/8

Read the novel summary of The Grapes of Wrath so that this week's assignments make sense. Be ready to take a quiz on the information presented here.

Then, read the conclusion to John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. We will be comparing it to the movie version's ending in class on lab day. Be ready to take a quiz on your reading.
