The United Nations
 |
The United Nations was originally created
as an international peace keeping organization. |
 |
The original charter was adopted by 50
nations at a meeting held in San Francisco during April 1945. |
 |
The goals of the United Nations are to
prevent wars and to stop those that have started, eliminate hunger, disease,
and illiteracy. |
 |
The United Nations is divided into six
major sections. The two most important are: |
- The General Assembly- This is where all member
nations discuss world problems and possible solutions.
- The Security Council- Their job is to investigate
conflicts between nations and recommend solutions. There are 15 countries
represented with five members being permanent. They are the U.S., Russia,
Great Britain, France, and China. Each permanent member has single vote veto
power over any proposal. The other ten seats are elected for a two-year
term.
