Week 8

The schedule this week is altered due to the CAHSEE test. Please follow the dates listed below carefully. We will be meeting in class on Wednesday this week.

Monday - As we continue our exploration of the Cold War, I would like you examine some of the  Cold War Flashpoints. I have separated the events into 3 time periods.  The first is 1945-1959. The second is 1960-1969. The third is 1970-1991. For the first two time periods rank the top 5 events that you believe put the world on the brink of war. For the final time period, choose the top 3 events. Then explain why you believe your #1 choice in each time period put the world on the brink of war.  (A-15) History Social Science Standard 11.9.3

Tuesday-   Today is a 1, 3, 5 day.

WednesdayThe Cold War was a period where spying was to be expected by both the United States and The Soviet Union. To gain a better appreciation for the era read about  the  weapons that were used and the ways in which both sides practiced espionage.  Once you have explored both links answer the following questions.

1- Which weapon gave a spy the greatest chance for concealing and carrying out an assassination? Explain your answer.

2-Which espionage device would be hardest to detect? Why?   (A-15)

We will be focusing on the McCarthy Era. We will start the period with a short game called "Are You A Dot?" Then I will do a short lecture about one of the most outspoken figures in the cold war,  Senator Joseph McCarthy.

Following the lecture we will watch a video segment on the Army-McCarthy hearings. History Social Science Standard 11.9.3

Thursday- Today, you will read about Senator Joseph McCarthy. Begin by reading about his historical background and then read pages 1-5 of a letter he sent to President Truman.  After reading pages 1-5, in a paragraph, write an explaination of  why you think McCarthy sent this telegram? Next, read page 6. In a paragraph, what appears to be the real reason he sent the letter? Explain. Finally, pretend you are President Truman and write a brief response to Senator McCarthy's telegram  (A-15)
To gain an overview of the 1950's, examine these 10 postage stamps and answer each of the questions. (A-20) History Social Science Standard 11.8.8

Friday-  Today is a Professional Growth Day.
