Brinkmanship- Today we are going to work on the fine art of negotiation. The class will be divided into pairs and each pair of students is going to receive a crisis to research and then assigned a different perspective of the crisis. For example, for the Korean War, one pair would represent North Korea/The Soviet Union and the other pair will represent South Korea/The United States. I will then provide each pair with a brief background sheet so that you can understand the crisis. Next, you will have about 30 minutes to do some additional research. Once you have gathered your facts, you will be filling out a Crisis Preparation Sheet. On this sheet, you are going to make a list of 4 demands that will help you solve this crisis to your satisfaction. Your demands should start small and work up to your ultimate demand. Now, each of your demands must be accompanied by an action your side would be willing to take if your demand was not met. As your demands become more severe, so should your actions. Once you have completed your demands and actions, list two compromise solutions on the back of the demand sheet that you would be willing to accept to settle this crisis. Be sure not to share these compromises with the other side. Now you will be ready to negotiate. There will be two ten minute negotiation sessions with a five minute break between them. Your goal is to negotiate the most favorable treaty possible for your side. You must have your treaty written and signed before the end of the second negotiations session. Failure to successfully negotiate a treaty will mean that WWIII has begun and that the world is doomed. Teams- |
