School Choice Under Program Improvement
The federal No Child Let Behind Act of 2001(NCLB) requires that all schools make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Achievement targets for AYP have been established by the state, for the school as a whole, as well as for specific demographic groups of students within the school. Under NCLB, Valley Elementary did not achieve its AYP target for two consecutive years. Thus, the school has been identified as a “Program Improvement” (PI) school for the 2011-2012 school year.
All parents/guardians of students attending a PI school have the right to request a transfer of their child(ren) to a school within the district that is not in Program Improvement, with transportation provided at no cost to parents.
For the 2011-2012 school year, Morning Creek Elementary School and Adobe Bluff Elementary School were designated as schools of choice for parents with children attending Valley Elementary School. Out of a Valley Elementary population of 813 students, PUSD received requests from parents to move five children to Morning Creek Elementary School.
