SAN DIEGO FESTIVAL OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
EXPO DAY AT PETCO PARK

Students from Oak Valley and Twin Peaks Middle Schools demonstrated the making of glϋg (a mixture of white glue, Borax, water, and food coloring) at the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering Expo Day held at Petco Park. Thank you to our business partners, Northrop Grumman Information Systems, Costco, Target, and Walmart,
for their generous sponsorship.
JOB SHADOW DAY AT SONY

Students from Poway High School's Avid Classes experienced a day in the real world at Sony Electronics Inc. Thank you to Sony for opening their doors to our students!
C-SPAN CAMPAIGN 2012 BUS STOPS AT MT. CARMEL AND WESTVIEW HIGH SCHOOLS

While crossing the country on its "Road to the White House" tour, the C-SPAN bus made stops at Mt. Carmel and Westview High Schools. Students in AP Government and civics classes had the opportunity to board the bus and learn about public affairs event coverage through a variety of media. The C-SPAN bus is an interactive, educational experience with the goal of providing resources to enhance thought and discussion of government and public affairs. We appreciate our Partners in Education, Time Warner Cable and C-SPAN, for providing this special opportunity for our students.
SALK INSTITUTE MOBILE SCIENCE LAB VISITS
MEADOWBROOK MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Salk Institute Mobile Science Lab visited Meadowbrook Middle School recently for three consecutive days to allow over 200 students to learn about biotechnology. It is believed that early introduction to biotechnology at the middle school level will spark student interest in further studies and career opportunities.
The Salk Mobile Lab van arrived equipped with supplies, microscopes, and all the tools to demonstrate the wonders of science. Salk Institute’s Dona Mapston, Education Specialist, along with scientists, graduate students, and volunteers presented the lessons using exciting interactive and hands-on experiments.
Students were excited as they learned about cells and cell functions, genes and mutations, DNA and DNA footprinting. One of the experiments involved separating DNA from wheat germ. Learning about gel electrophoresis enabled students to simulate the sorting of molecules based on size and charge.
Salk Institute has also offered the Meadowbrook teachers the opportunity to attend a workshop that would enable teachers to check out science kits to use in their own classrooms on their own schedules. The goal is to have the program become self sufficient. The labs will be maintained by UCSD grad students.
The visit was arranged through the Partners in Education program of Poway Unified School District. Showing relevance to classroom learning is an important part of the work of the Partners in Education program. The focus of the Partners in Education Program is to advance science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) Skills; promote college and career readiness; and to support rigor, relevance, and relationships in the classroom.
WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DAY AT LOCKHEED MARTIN
The Partners in Education Program greatly appreciates the opportunity for our students to attend Lockheed Martin's Women in Engineering Day at their Scripps Ranch location. Approximately 90 girls from Rancho Bernardo High School, Del Norte High School, and Poway High School enjoyed a day filled with listening to inspiring speakers, participating in hands-on activities, and learning about what it is like to be a woman engineer.
Guest speakers included Malliga Tholandi, Assistant Superintendent of Poway Unified School District; Merrilee Boyack, Poway City Council Member; Robin Lipka, San Diego Chapter President of Women in Defense; Lt. Leia Guccione, Officer in the U. S, Navy and Outreach Chair for the San Diego section of the Society of Women Engineers.
Activities included Reverse Engineering, developing creative problem solving by teams taking apart a computer and putting it back together again; Foil Boats, learning how to design, build, test, and improve a product. Students developed their own design based on a few basic scientific principles and tested its performance; and they also participated in the building Solar Cars, a Systems Engineering Project. Students discovered the importance of teamwork and its applications to engineering and life.
NORTHROP GRUMMAN BRINGS RESIDENCY STEM PROGRAM TO POWAY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PRESCHOOLS
Integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in early childhood programs through arts-based learning approaches

Northrop Grumman, in partnership with the Poway Unified School District and the Partners in Education Program, provided a residency program, Wolf Trap Early Childhood STEM Learning Through the Arts, for Los Penasquitos and Rolling Hills Elementary Schools' Head Start and Preschool classes during the week of December 5, 2011.
Visiting Teaching Artist, Jeanne Wall, of the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts located in Virginia, conducted daily classroom sessions that correlate dance, drama, and music with pre-kindergarten and kindergarten learning standards in math, science, and principles of engineering (problem solving, designing/building) and fundamental principles of scientific discovery.

An additional goal of this program was to provide professional development for teachers while helping children learn through active participation in arts-infused experiences that are grounded in proven developmentally appropriate best practices.
PUSD preschool teachers attended a Professional Development Workshop on Wolf Trap Early Childhood STEM Learning Through the Arts on Thursday, December 8, 2011, 3:30-6:30 p.m. in the PUSD District Office Conference Room.
Preschool families also attended a Family Involvement Workshop at Los Peñasquitos Elementary School multi-purpose room.
