AVID

What is AVID?

AVID is a unique program, unlike any other. AVID is the ONLY program for students in the academic middle— not at-risk, not remedial, not GATE. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is an international program started by San Diego teacher, Mary Catherine Swanson. AVID is a 7-12th grade program for students who would be the first in their families to attend and graduate from a 4-year university.
AVID is specifically designed for those who are under-represented in colleges and universities, all the while having academic potential to be successful in college when they attend. The AVID program teaches students specific skills that will enhance their chances of gaining entrance into a 4-year university and successfully graduating from that institution. These skills include note taking, time management, organization, inquiry, writing, study methods, public speaking, and many other skills that are required in a rigorous high school curriculum (i.e. Honors and Advanced Placement) and college.

Additionally, AVID students must display a desire to be academically pushed to higher levels of learning. Having worked with AVID students for the past 4 years, I can honestly say that these are some of the hardest-working, motivated students I have ever seen. My respect for them runs deep because they are consciously choosing a path of rigor, when others seem to be coasting through school.

If you are interested in the AVID program for your student and he or she fits the profile of an AVID student, please contact the counseling department at BHMS.
