Academy Field Trips

The Academy Mission is to prepare students to succeed in high school, college and the world beyond. To support this mission, we have developed the following field trip experiences:

6th grade college field trips:

University of California at San Diego (UCSD) and California State University at San Marcos (CSUSM). At both Universities, student tours are led by college "ambassadors" (college students). They also visit the library at CSUSM and hear an inspirational speech from Steve Scott (American Record holder in the mile run and coach of the CSUSM cross country and track teams). At UCSD they will visit science labs, music labs and other campus facilities.

7th grade college field trips:

University of San Diego (USD) and Palomar College with Sony Corporation in Rancho Bernardo. At USD, student tours are led by college "ambassadors" (college students). They will also visit the USD "Honors Program" and hear about college academic life from several USD students. The USD Honors program is much like our Academy (a small support academic community within the larger campus). At Palomar, a two-year community college, students will learn about the two-year degree programs and the transfer program to four-year universities. Over 50% of graduating PUSD students attend community colleges. Students will also learn how their middle school education is applied in the work place at Sony Corporation. The presentation will include demonstrations and information from working engineers and the human relations department.

8th grade college field trips:

Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) and San Diego State University (SDSU). At SDSU, Academy students take self-guided tours of the campus facilities and learn about the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). They also get to tour the freshman dorms and hear a presentation about the "Freshman Success Program" (a one-unit class). At PLNU, student tours are led by college "ambassadors" (college students). Academy students also get to explore the park and beach adjacent to the campus.

The Academy also attends other educational field trips to support academic learning: Sea World, The Eco Center, Museum exhibits (King Tut), The Wild Animal Park, Envirotours to the Miramar Landfill, The Midway aircraft carrier museum, County Courthouse Tour, Maritime Museum and Spreckels Theater.

Parent participation is an important part of our field trip programs. Parents join us on the trips as chaperones and help us arrange special tours. We travel by PUSD buses for the college trips at a cost of $10 per child ($5 each for two field trips).
