Academy P.E. General Policies

Philosophy

  • Provide Academy students with a variety of physical education activities and experiences
  • Promote a lifetime routine of physical activity and healthy habits.
  • Teach students the value of camaraderie and team work.
  • Promote student participation, effort and self-improvement.

Testing

  • All grade levels will participate in physical fitness testing.
  • Students will complete the State Dept. of Ed. "Physical Fitness Test" ("PFT") criteria for 7th grade. Students will strive to test in the "Healthy Fitness Zone" (HFZ) on all tests. An example for "Healthy Fitness Zone" is 12 minutes and 30 seconds for the mile run for a 10 year old female student.

Participation/Equipment

  • PE participation is required as stated in State Board of Education policy.
  • Physical education OCIS (Off Campus Independent Study) contracts are available for students who participate after school in individual and competitive PE sports. For more information, parents can contact the front office at (858) 484-1300.
  • Students will purchase their PE uniform and locks from the Academy teachers in the locker rooms. (shirt, shorts, and lock is $31 - used equipment is offered for less, if available). Non-suits (not dressing out in PE uniform) will result in a lower letter grade and work habits mark.

Grades

  • Grading Rubric - click here
  • PE tutorial - Academic Academy teachers will issue a tutorial slip to students to be excused from PE for tutorial. Students are limited to one full PE tutorial period per week. Students can use a tutorial period for Science Olympiad, Math Field Day, school newspaper, yearbook publication, and other academic functions.
  • A "non-suit make up day" will be offered each trimester for students to earn back missed dress-out days.

Supervision for Academy PE (9th period)

  • Shower bell/change time: Students enter locker room by 2:30 and report to their PE area by 2:37. Extra running is a possible consequence for tardiness. Classes will return to the locker room by 3:15 and be out of the locker room by 3:25. "Stragglers" could be given locker room floor pickup. Academy teachers will close locker room doors between 2:37 and 3:15.
  • Students will be reminded to leave all valuables in their hall or PE lockers and not in their backpacks.
  • If a parent needs to check their child out of PE, contact the attendance office before 2:00 P.M. The student should not dress out. It can be very difficult to contact the student during PE class, as they are in transition from locker room to outdoors.

Schedule

  • The Academy PE activity schedule will be created in conjunction with the BMMS PE department and any "after school programs" (such as Running Raiders, which is open to all BMMS students).
  • Academy teachers assign Academy students to their PE classes and create rosters to be distributed the Academy team.
  • Students participating in the Running Raiders must first report in their roll call number so that their teacher can account for their attendance.

PE Excuses

  • Parent excuses are valid for 3 calendar days. A student may have 1 parent excuse per trimester.
  • If additional days are needed, a student must obtain a note from their physician. The note must explain the injury and the duration of their excuse.
