Janurary 2012 message from the PTA President
PTA Nominations and Elections
So, I’m one to learn why procedures are done the way they are and to follow rules. I recently went to learn how Creekside’s PTA Officers are nominated. What I learned was really interesting, and since one our goals for the year was to educate the Association, I’m going to share with you what I learned.
Our nominating committee is made up of 5 members and 2 alternates, all of whom are members (at least 30 days) of the PTA. Teachers, if they are a member, can be elected to the committee. Did you notice the word “elected” in the previous sentence? That’s right; the nominating committee gets ELECTED at the February’s Association Meeting (Thursday February 9th).
Who
would make a good candidate for the nominating committee?
A member who is:
- available to meet with the other members of the committee. The first meeting is mandatory, and if you can’t make that one, then one of the elected alternates steps in and you step down.
- knowledgeable about PTA and what’s involved.
- objective, and can say her/his best friend is not a qualified candidate.
- discrete. The committee meetings are confidential.
The nominating committee, once elected has the task of finding the BEST qualified member nominee for each of the following positions EVERY YEAR:
The President CANNOT be part of the nominating committee but can appoint the Parliamentarian and Corresponding Secretary subject to the ratification of the executive board.
You cannot serve on the nominating committee for more than one consecutive year (if you served last year, you can’t serve this year).
Being on the nominating committee does not preclude you from being a nominee for any one office.
The nominating committee has until 30 days prior to the April 12, 2012 Association Meeting (they have until March 13th, 2012) to find one nominee for each position listed above. It’s okay if there are unfilled positions. At the April 12th meeting, the President will call for nominees from the floor. You can speak up then, but if you are interested in becoming involved please contact the PTA before then (preferably) at PTACreekside@yahoo.com and let us know. We may not be aware of your desires and talents.
I hope you found this helpful and I hope you’ll consider participating! :)

And now for something completely different...
November 30,2011 in Sacramento, The Our Children, Our Future: Local Schools and
Early Education Investment Act was submitted to the Attorney General
for title and summary for the November 6, 2012 ballot.
California State PTA supports this bold initiative, which will provide
approximately $1,300 per student in new funds each year that must be
spent directly at school sites with local parent and educator input.
To see the entire press release click here. If you'd like to learn and follow the initiative, click on the State PTA tab at the top of the page. Or you can find more out through Kimberley Beatty -- she's our Legislation Representative for the school and council.
