Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year!

Every year we choose a theme to start off a new PTA school year.  While I can’t take credit for the Hawaiian theme, it was an easy one for me to adopt. Because my husband was born and raised in Hawaii, we go back to visit family as often as we can.  In addition to its amazing beauty, relaxing pace, and incredible sights, the one thing that always strikes me about the Hawaiian culture is the sense of “’ohana”.  ‘Ohana means “family” but the Hawaiian word seems to encompass a strong sense of community where family is defined not just by blood but by friends, neighbors, and colleagues for whatever common purpose that binds them. 

While it may be easier to demonstrate our theme with hibiscus and flip-flops (and there will be no shortage of that!), my hope for this school year is that we can celebrate the ‘ohana felt here at Deer Canyon.  The goal of any PTA is to be an advocate for our children.  I believe Deer Canyon has an incredible community dedicated to just that – advocating for the growth and education of our kids.  Whether you are a newcomer (“malahini”) or a long-time family of Deer Canyon, we need your support, your time, and your input to continue our tradition of being one of the top elementary schools in San Diego County.

To the right you can see the many programs the Deer Canyon PTA volunteers manage. Your PTA dues, donations through our “No Fuss Fundraising” and through the money we raise with our Gift Wrap sale support these programs.  Unfortunately, these programs do not provide for everything our children need.  Art, music, science and even academic support services have been cut as our district tries to make due with less and less from the State each year.  To keep this essential academic curriculum in tact, it takes major fundraising.  That is why you will also be asked to support the Deer Canyon Foundation, the primary fundraising group at DCES. In the spirit of ‘ohana, we will work closely together to make sure our kids get the programs that make our school great.

By following the links to our “Volunteer” page or our “Support PTA” page, you will find a great deal more information on how you can help at Deer Canyon.  “How much” or “how often” is not as important as just getting involved so that our kids can benefit from you.  We take PTA memberships and your Volunteer Interests throughout the school year, so it is never too late to join!
