FEBRUARY PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Greetings Explorers,

I would like to thank all of you who attended my State of School Address on Wednesday, January 25th. The meeting immediately followed our second PTA/Foundation General Association Meeting. I truly appreciated the opportunity to discuss our future budget issues, class size, support services, our software programs, MAP testing, our spring Principal’s Reading Challenge, and our second Science Fair. If any of you have further thoughts or questions about the information presented, please let me know.

The spring Principal’s Reading Challenge will begin Monday, February 13th. During this time please encourage your child to read as many books as they can within their reading level. The challenge posed for them is to attain the expected number of Accelerated Reader points for reading at least thirty minutes a day for seven weeks. The challenge will end on April 13. Students that meet their goal will be invited to a special assembly. It is very important that children develop a lifelong habit of reading. During this challenge, it is our hope to hook some of our reluctant readers into selecting reading as a leisure time activity. This is no small task given the many other alternatives for our children today. Parents, thank you for supporting the reading habits and efforts of your children. We know that at Del Sur we are a school community of readers.

During the next months of school, I am looking for parent volunteers that can help us implement our new “Engineering is Elementary” curriculum. This curriculum was purchased through the generosity of Jerome’s Furniture. I would like at least one parent per classroom to help facilitate the nine lessons in this program. We will be teaching this program for one hour during nine consecutive days during the year. Preferably, the lessons would be taught in the afternoon. If you are interested in helping us bring this hands- on science program to our students, please give me a call. I will be holding a meeting for interested parents sometime in February.

For those families that have been inquiring about our Science Fair this year, please note that this year’s Fair will take place Friday, May 11. More information about our Science Fair will come out next month.

I had the opportunity to attend our district’s recognition dinner in January. This is a time once a year that our district honors our teachers of the year, classified employees of the year, and our volunteers of the year that were selected from the previous school year. From our school Robyn Elbayadi was recognized as our teacher of the year. Gabriella Olszewska, our librarian, was honored as our classified employee of the year; and Charity Stone was saluted as our volunteer of the year. These individuals truly represent the high quality of teachers, classified staff, and volunteers that we are fortunate to have at Del Sur.

On March 17, our Educational Foundation will hold its annual Casino Night silent and live auction at the Ranch House. This is a fun evening where the goal is to raise funds to pay the salaries of our music teacher, art teachers, and Impact credentialed teachers. In addition, the Foundation raises money to support adding and maintaining our technology on our site. I thank all of you in advance for supporting this very important event for our school. Last year our Foundation raised over $50,000. With these funds, we continue to be able to provide our students with a well-rounded optimal educational experience.

I would like to thank our parents for all of your support and encouragement with your precious children. The staff and I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with our students every day.

See you on Campus,

Mr. Johnson
