Students will automatically be placed in the following classes.

ELECTIVE COURSE OF STUDY
Advanced Orchestra: This class is for students with one or more years of experience with a stringed instrument. Students will further skills on musical instruments and perform different styles of music. Participation in orchestra should be considered at least a one-year commitment. PRACTICE and evening performances are required.
Band: Several levels of band are offered. The level of placement will be determined by the band director (see the following “Band and Orchestra Note”). Students will further skills on musical instruments and perform many different styles of music. Participation in band should be considered at least a one-year commitment. PRACTICE and evening performances are required.
Spanish 1/2: 8th Grade Only. This course offers students an opportunity to begin developing their receptive skills in listening and reading, their productive skills in speaking and writing, and their sensitivity to cultural differences. This course may contribute to meeting certain college entrance requirements for foreign language if the next level is taken in high school. Enrolling students will need STRONG BASIC SKILLS in English and math as well as good study habits as pre-requisites for success in this class. (This is the same course as the high school's Spanish 1-2 class.) The Humanities Core teacher’s signature is required. A signature does not mean students will be placed in this class, as there are limited spaces available. Eighth grade students will be given priority.
Semester Program
Due to the budget cuts, we are uncertain of the semester courses being offered next year. If you chose this option, two courses will be chosen for you.

Advancement Via Individual Determination - AVID is a nationwide program for students who have the potential to go to a four-year university, but may not realize their potential. It is designed to give students note-taking skills, writing and reading skills and strategies, organizational skills and tutoring. Students are expected to take more challenging courses and meet those new levels of expectations.
Yearbook/Journalism: This is not a separate class, but combined within your Humanities classes. Check back soon for more information about the application process.
Production of the school yearbook is the result of hours of work writing stories, taking photographs, planning layouts and promoting and distributing the final products. Students will also create the school newspaper distributed to the school throughout the year.
ASB: Applications - Available on April 11 in room 510. Due -April 22
