AP Testing Information from Mr. Ray Hall, AP Test Coordinator
Some have asked why the AP Exams are scheduled later this year than previous years. College Board, the parent company that created the AP program, always starts the exams on the first Monday of May. This year that means the exams begin on May 7th. The exams run each week day until May 18th. Last year, over 750 Poway High students took over 1,500 exams in 20 different courses. This year should be similar. A complete listing of the AP Exam daily schedule may be found at: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/cal/cal2.html. I will be in my office, K-7, beginning March 1st on a daily basis. If you have questions concerning any aspect of the AP Exams, feel free to phone me at extension 5121 or email me at raymondhall42@yahoo.com. Support your AP students at home as they prepare for the exams. Next issue topic: Registration (dates, prices, financial aid).
PHS PTSA Board & Committee Positions Opportunity:
It is that time of year again when the PTSA starts thinking about next year and how important it is to keep providing our excellent programs and services to our school. It is a great way to model leadership and commitment for your children, help the school, and meet great people. Descriptions of board positions can be found at http://www.capta.org/sections/management/job-descriptions.cfm. Questions contact PHS PTSA Nominating Committee Chair Kim Rohr at kim.rohr@am.sony.com.

Student Services http://www.powayusd.com/pusdphs/Studentservices/
What You Read Can Make A Difference! The PHS Student Services Office works with all our students. While partially funded through a tobacco grant, the majority of the funding comes from donations from the PHS community. A current fundraiser is through the sales of two books, authored by Steve & Traci Barker-Ball, under the pen name Lynn Evans. All proceeds from book sales are being donated to PHS Student Services. Bobbie Titan in the Mark of Kain is a young adult novel that adults have also enjoyed about some extraordinary teens and The Valentine’s Game is a “chick lit” book about people in their twenties searching for true love. To find out more about these electronic books or to purchase, go to www.lynnevansbooks.com.
Parent’s Guide to the Teen Brain:
Do you ask yourself "Is my teen's attitude and behavior normal? Through the use of video, interactive segments, scenario-based role playing experiences, and practical advice from experts, A Parent's Guide to the Teen Brain explores the science behind teenage brain development and how it shapes normal teenage attitudes and behavior, including their attraction to using drugs and alcohol. Check out the website http://teenbrain.drugfree.org/ and for additional help you can talk to Mrs. Barker-Ball or Mrs. Struck in Student Support Services at Poway High School.
Food Donations: Our office serves students when they forget their lunch or don’t have any money for lunch that day. We are dependent on donations so if you would like to donate any healthy, simple food it would be appreciated! Items like granola bars, crackers, soup, etc. are appreciated (students have access to a microwave). Food can be dropped off in the front office.

Naviance/Family Connection: The Counseling Department has introduced all 10th grade students to the web-based Naviance/Family Connection program. The program can be found at https://connection.naviance.com/poway. Naviance is an online tool that offers a number of features that will help students make career and college plans. Our goal was to help each 10th grade student learn about the program and develop an account that he/she can access anytime to research career/ college options and conduct post-high school planning. We are excited that all our 10th graders have learned about Naviance!
Upcoming Counseling Events at PHS
Course Registration Process: On February 28th, February 29th, and March 1st, the Counselors will be visiting all classrooms conducting thorough grade-level presentations on academic planning and the course registration process for the 2012-2013 school year. Counselors rely heavily on teacher recommendations for placement. Your student’s current academic teachers will provide placement recommendations on their course request form (CRF). Parents will be given the opportunity to review their student’s course request form at home. A parent signature is required. We are excited to include an online registration component to this year’s CRF process. In addition to students completing the hard copy CRF form, they will be required to register for classes online. We will be guiding your student through this process. The course request forms will be due March 9, 2012.
Since Counselors will be in classrooms delivering this information to students, we are unable to meet with families on an individual basis. Additionally, during March and April, Counselors will be meeting with all students on their caseload for an individual audit meeting built in to the school day. This meeting allows Counselors and students to discuss the student’s post high school goals, their interests/passions, and finalize the student’s course selections based on graduation and four year college requirements. The Counselors will help evaluate, using teacher recommendations and student input, if the course selections are appropriate and in the student’s best interest. This meeting also serves as a time to discuss summer school course programs/offerings, if necessary.
If your student has a question or concern following their classroom presentation, we encourage them to access their Counselor during break, lunch, or after school. For additional Counseling information, please visit the Poway High School website. If you have specific questions or concerns following your student’s individual audit meeting, please contact your student’s Counselor via email. We appreciate your attention to your student’s academic success. We thank you for your patience and support of our course selection process which has proven to be highly successful in the placement of our students.
