When you're feeling confused, overwhelmed, stressed out, or just need to talk, we're here to help you. We have adult mentors as well as student peers to cater to your needs and to assist students and parents.

We offer services such as the following:

• Peer Counseling 80+ students around campus who help with new students, students needing someone to talk to, tutoring, conflict mediation, and students needing a boost.  Applications to be a Peer Counselor are available during the month of November for the following calendar year.  See link above for page and applications.

• Tobacco, drug and alcohol education  Classroom presentations, referrals, cessation. 

•  Mentor/tTutoring Program – We will match up students who are struggling academically with an older student or adult mentor. For a list of paid tutors, contact the Counseling Office.

• Grief Counseling – to help students understand and get through a difficult period in their lives. Services by adult Counselors as well as Peer Counselors

• Counseling Referrals – if a student and/or family needs help obtaining outside counseling, we give referrals to the Caring Connections Center, which provides free counseling services (through our grant).  We also have referrals for outside sources.

• Character Education  – helps get messages such as trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, fairness, caring, and citizenship, to the student body.

• Conflict Mediation - our staff and/or peer counselors are available to work with students having conflicts with others (peers, teachers, parents, etc.).

• PLUS (Peer Leaders Uniting Students) - the PLUS program is put on by peer counselors.  Its aim is to get students together who would not normally talk to each other and discuss issues on our campus. There are usually two forums per semester.  These are all on late start Mondays so that class time missed is minimal.  Each time PLUS is held there should be different participants (each person should only attend one per year). 

• GSA  (Gay-Straight Alliance) – a club honoring diversity and equality.  While not specifically sponsored by the Student Services Office, Traci Barker-Ball is a co-advisor.  This club meets on Tuesdays at lunch in room N6102.

Funded by private donations, the Poway High Foundation and a tobacco grant (Tobacco Use Prevention).
