Library Fines, dreaded library fines!
Here's how to avoid them at PHS:
Library Books are due after 10 school days—do not count weekend days or days when school is not in session. The due date is stamped on the inside cover. (Reference books and DVDs are due the next day!) Turn in your book on or before the due date! |
Fines are 10¢ a day for a regular book, with a maximum overdue fine of $5.00. Fines are 50¢ a day for a reference book or video, with a maximum overdue fine of $10.00. |
Damaged books will be assessed fines. If you find damage in a book, return to speak with a staff member as soon as possible so that you won’t be held responsible. You may be charged a replacement cost if you return a book in a condition which is unusable. |
Patrons with fines over $1.00 cannot check out books until they pay their fines. |
Renewing books: Patrons may renew a book as long as no other patron has placed a hold on that title. |
Renewing books: Patrons may renew a book with or without the book—simply come to the checkout counter with your ID card if you don’t have the book with you. Patrons may also renew their books online by logging into the Catalog. |
Overdue notices are sent out periodically to teachers to give to students, however, it is the student’s responsibility to return or renew books to avoid fines. The due date is stamped inside the front cover! |
Students are expected to return borrowed textbooks and other materials in the same condition in which they were borrowed. In accordance with PUSD administrative procedure (6.84.1), the student and/or his/her parents are liable for the replacement cost or repair of any lost, vandalized, or damaged book. Textbook staff will assess charges in accordance with the following replacement and repair schedules.

Check the condition of your books when you get them. If you find damage not noted on the inside of the front cover, return to the library and talk with someone. You may be held responsible for damage if you wait until later… |
Cover your books. Putting a cover on your book makes it yours—it is less likely to get switched with a friend’s book, less likely to be lifted by a fellow classmate, less likely to get damaged… do not use ‘sticky’ covers. Brown paper bags work well--and put tape on the corners of the cover to make it last longer. We have book covers in the library, and if we’re not too busy, and we will help you cover your book. |
Turn in your books properly. If you turn in books to your teacher, the teacher should have you sign a sheet putting the barcode number by your name. If the teacher doesn’t make a list, wait and take the book directly to the library and ask the library staff to make sure you’re turning in your own book(s). |
Treat your books with care. Don’t drop or throw your backpack to the ground (the book separates from the cover which results in bindery fees). Don’t spill food or water on or in your books. Don’t write in your books. |
Lost books usually turn up. Custodians, campus supervisors, teachers, students, and citizens regularly turn in books left in all sorts of places (benches, bushes, parking lots, public libraries, airports, etc.). If you’ve lost a book, come see if it has made it’s way back to the library (after checking under the bed and in your trunk). You are still financially responsible for a lost book, but we will check another one out to you. |
If you would to replace a book rather than pay for it, please follow the Guidelines for Replacing Textbooks. |
