BLAZER BULLETIN FOR FEBRUARY 3, 2012

SHOW OFF THAT TALENT!  Final Variety Show Tonight -   Evening Show Grades 4-5: Friday, Feb. 3rd, 6:30-8:30pm.  I am sad to tell you that we had a car broken into at last week’s Variety Show.   Please ensure that you leave NO VALUABLES in your car.  The car that was broken into had the doors locked, but that did not deter the thief.  Please keep your belongs safe at home.

WELCOME JIM SHADOAN!  We have the good fortunate of having a new Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) to help with the daily runnings of the Ranch since Mrs. Auten left.   If you get the chance, please introduce yourself to Mr. Shadoan  - he’ll be out front beginning Tuesday morning greeting you with a smile in the drop-off zone.

CELL PHONE REMINDER:  Just a reminder for students -   Cell phones are not allowed on campus.  You may use your phone when you exit the school gates.  If you are on your phone on campus, you will have it brought to the office.  You will need to have a note from your parents or they will have to come to pick up your phone.   Parents, we ask that set a good example by not using your phone on campus.  Remember courtesy is contagious!

PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION:  If you are interested in having a child attend a PUSD Preschool in the fall, February is Registration Month.   All of the information regarding classes, location and enrollment can be found at http://powayusd.com/preschool

Returning families may contact Mrs. McCann or Mrs. Dukellis.

MOVIE NIGHT:  Student Council Movie Night is just around the corner.  We will be hosting the movie ‘Dolphin Tale’ which is rated PG on Friday, February 10 from 6:00-8:00.  For just $10 you will receive 2 pieces of pizza, water, and either popcorn or candy.  Extra slices of pizza, water, popcorn, and candy can be purchased after everyone has been served for $1 each.  We will be out in the front of the school selling tickets towards the end of next week and the following week.  You can also purchase a ticket through Mrs. Smith in the office.  Only 200 tickets will be sold, so don’t miss out.

KEEP UP WITH YOUR COMPASS!  You've completed most of your mid-year MAP tests, so get on the Compass Website and keep your skills sharp!  Don't forget 2/6 is the last day to turn in reports for the 2/15 celebration!

THANK YOU RANCH HANDS!  With all the help, we were able to move all our books to the storage room.   Many hands make the load lighter!  We cannot thank you enough!

PTA NEWS!  Help shape and/or Join the 2012-2013 PTA:   The PTA has great opportunities to be involved with your children's education!  The PTA Parliamentarian is looking for a few parents to serve as the Nominating Committee. This will be low time commitment, but provide the opportunity to select PTA representatives for the 2012-2013 School Year. We will meet a couple times in February and March, but most of our work can be done by phone and email.   Once the nominating committee is formed, we will be slating the officers for 2012-2013. A complete list of open positions will follow shortly.  No prior experience is necessary.  If you are interested or have questions, please contact

TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN (formerly PEPP) Parent Information Night for Transitional Kindergarten 2012-2013 will be Thursday, March 29th 6:30 pm at Painted Rock Elementary School.

Flu Guideline:  We want all our students healthy and strong!  Make sure that you follow these guidelines to keep your children, and all the students at Stone Ranch healthy!

•The best ways to address the potential spread of the flu is to continue to use good personal hygiene habits.

1.     Wash hands often with soap and water.  Rub your hands together vigorously.

2.     Use a hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.  Parents may send a small container of hand sanitizer(62%+ alcohol based) for their student’s own use.

3.    Cover mouth and nose with a tissue for a cough or sneeze.  Be sure to dispose of used tissues immediately and properly.

4.    If no tissue is available, to “catch your cough in your elbow” by covering mouth and nose with the crook of arm and sneeze into the shirt sleeve.

5.    Do not share objects.  Flu germs spread quickly.  It is very important not to share objects such as cell phones, MP3’s, combs, brushes, cosmetics, food, clothing, ets. With others.

And when the flu virus hits take these steps:

 ·         Recognize symptoms of the flu.  Symptoms of the flu include fever(100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired.  Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.

·         Do not send students to school if they are sick or have these symptoms.

Students who are determined to be sick at school will be sent from class and kept away from other students.  They will be sent home.  This includes before and after-school programs.

·         Make plans now for students who need to stay home.   Plan for how children will be picked up from school and cared for at home in case they become ill.

·         Keep sick students at home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone without using fever-reducing drugs.  By keeping students home when they have a fever, we can reduce the number of new people who may get infected.

Safety Reminder

  1. Drop your student off in the drop off loops or walk them to the gate closest to the playground (by the Character Counts benches).  Students may also enter campus at the gate adjacent to the community playground below Stone Ranch.  Parents are encouraged to drop their students off at the gate, and not enter the campus.  There will be staff supervision on the playground before school.  Students will be allowed on the play structures or to sit at the tables and benches; children will not be allowed to play soccer or kickball before the start of school.

  2. These two gates will open at 7:40 and all students will go directly to the playground with their backpacks.  Students who attend class in buildings B, C, D, E, and F will not be dropping their backpacks off at the classrooms.   Students in building G, I, and H will quietly drop their backpacks off at class.

  3. At 7:53, the first bell will ring.  Students who are on the playground will then walk to pick up their backpacks.  At this time, three gates will open for students to walk to class: the gate by the B ranch house, the gate by ESS and the gate behind the F ranch house.  For students on the playground, kindergarten and first grade will go through the gate by ESS; grades 3, 4, and 5 will enter through the gate behind the F ranch house.  Any students arriving on campus after 7:53 will proceed directly to their classrooms.  At 7:55 teachers will allow students into their classroom.

  4. All gates will be locked at 8:00 and late students and parent volunteers will enter through the front office.
