Collect SunnyD Labels
We are excited to tell you about a great program that can bring free books to our school. It's called the SunnyD Book Spree, and the program will donate 20 books to every classroom that sends 20 SunnyD UPC labels.

It would be fantastic if our school could benefit this year. Last year, SunnyD donated over 250,000 books to schools across America. Imagine every classroom getting 20 new books!

Save eligible SunnyD UPC labels, and send them in to your classroom or office collection box. A team will collect and mail them to the program for our free books. Ask friends and family to collect labels too.

Through a generous and savvy parent we already have enough for 8 classrooms! We only need 320 more labels to include all teachers, librarian, resource rooms, and preschool! Hurry program ends Nov. 16th!

Thanks in advance for helping us make the classroom a brighter place for our kids! Questions? contact Shelle Thomas @ 858/842-1827. More info will be posted on our website in order to help us stay "green".

Integrated Preschool Opportunity
Poway Unified School District is pleased to offer for the 2011-2012 school year, Integrated Preschool Programs at Pomerado Elementary and Deer Canyon Elementary schools. They will serve 3 to 5 year old children with and without special needs. A general education developmental curriculum will include both large and small group circle time, play, and language activities. Other skills and activities that are introduced are music and rhythm; self help skills, thinking skills, language arts, social skills, number concepts, gross and fine motor skills. The children who have special needs may experience difficulty in one or more of the following areas: speech and language, play skills, and social skills. The success of the integrated program greatly depends on the inclusion of children without special needs who act as models as all children learn together.

All children in the preschool programs will work as an integrated group. They will have opportunities to work and play together in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding. The curriculum is play-based, which means that children are encouraged to play together in a way that leads to growth and development.

Our preschool staff will meet with you and arrange a class visitation and provide information about enrollment.
  • Class Time: M-F, 5 hours per day (Alternate times will be considered)
  • Options: 3 and 5 day options available.
  • Cost: Five day program is $330 a month. Prorated rates are available for other options. There is also a one time, non-refundable $50 registration fee.

Volunteer Opportunities
We are looking for those interested in assisting in the LRC in both the computer lab and library. You do not need any special computer training for this position. Sign up for a vacant time slot online, either during the time your child’s class is in the LRC or during any other time slot that works for you!

Our teachers have so appreciated all of the help parents have provided in the volunteer office already this year! The valuable work done by volunteers here allows our teachers to continue to serve our kids rather than being bogged down by clerical duties. If you are able to take a slot in the permanent volunteer office schedule, please sign up online!

Lastly, you all know how smoothly morning drop-off runs when we have many smiling volunteers opening doors and assisting children out of the car in a safe and speedy manner. If you have time available to volunteer as a C.D.O. (Car Door Opener), please click the link to sign up. Your kids are welcomed to help you out as Jr. C.D.O.’s! Remember, pull all the way forward.

**For questions on any of these volunteer opportunities, contact Rachel Allums at 513-2585 or rachelallums@yahoo.com.

Going "Green"
In order to improve our communication between school and home while conserving our natural and financial resources, we are implementing a “paperless” school. We are not eliminating all paper sent home, but our goal is to minimize the amount of paper that we use by having event information as well as forms, letters and flyers available online. Our plan is to unite the internet, email and our Connect-ED call out system to keep you informed and more linked to school.

At the start of each month, we will send home a hard copy of the entire month's events with the youngest student. Every Sunday evening, a Connect-ED will go out reminding people of the upcoming week's events. Supporting information will be available on the website, including permission or other forms to be downloaded and returned to school. We will have hard copies available in the office for those who do not have computer or internet access.

For those who do have access, please make a habit of checking the website. It is updated almost daily and is a great resource for those who want to stay connected to what's happening at school and to plan ahead for what's coming up. The most up-to-date information on school, PTA and ESS events is always available on the TBES Calendar. See the bottom of the page for instructions on how to integrate the TBES calendar with your own online calendar.

Summer Office Hours

August 4th - August 15th 9am - 2pm
August 18th Closed

School Supplies
Have you started your school supply shopping yet? Supply lists are available online here. If you shop at Office Depot, mention that your kids go to Tierra Bonita. The school receives discounts based on supplies bought there. You can do this any time during the year.

Full Day Kindergarten
Tierra Bonita is excited to share that we currently have the facility space to offer full day kindergarten for all of our incoming kindergarteners. Additionally, classes will maintain a 20:1 ratio. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to enrich their educational experiences at school. Students will have more time to develop social skills, develop fine and gross motor skills, as well as have increased time for academics.

Keep Collecting Box Tops!
Please continue to collect Box Tops throughout the summer and return them to school in the fall. You can also create an account at www.boxtops4education.com and see how much money Tierra Bonita has earned, get a list of all Box Top participating prodcuts, sign up to receive email about special Box Top promotions and learn about other ways to raise money for our school.

Welcome Back to School, Meet and Greet
Meet the new principal, Joe Erpelding, on Tuesday, August 12th 10-11am in the MPR.

Registration for the 2008-2009 School Year
Registration for the new school year will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room on:

Tuesday, August 5th, 1-4 pm for students whose last names begin with A-K
Wednesday, August 6th, 1-4 pm for students whose last names begin with L-Z

If you are not able to make the date and time assigned for your last name, please feel free to come on the other date listed. All students who plan on attending Tierra Bonita for the 2008-2009 year must register at these times. (This includes new students who enrolled in the spring.) Please click the "Continuing Student Registration" button on the left and complete and print the Required Forms. Bring these with you at the specified registration time.

New this year is the ability to update registration info online. Parents should have received a letter in the mail with their login name and password. Login to onlinereg.powayusd.com, complete "Account Activation" and then "Update Student Information". If you do not have access to a computer, please attend your designated packet return date and the information will be provided to you. Parents still need to attend their designated Registration Day to return the Signature Verification Form and Student Health Information form (Grade 4).

Registration Day Extravaganza
To kick-off Tierra Bonita's new paperless initiative, the PTA will be trying something entirely new this year. In the past, we've always sent home a "First Day Packet" that explained who we are, what we do, the programs that we fund to improve your students' school experience, and what we do with your generous donations. The paperwork in the packet allowed you to join the PTA, donate to support our school's programs, sign up for volunteer positions, and purchase school directories, yearbooks, and spirit wear.

This year, we are forgoing the First Day packets in the interest of saving money and the environment. Instead, we will offer sign-ups for volunteering, yearbook, directory, and t-shirts sales, and encourage donations during Registration Days on August 5th and 6th. PTA volunteers will present information about our programs and fundraising efforts and be available to answer questions. Registration Day is your chance to join Tierra Bonita’s PTA, sign up to be listed in the student directory, order your yearbook and spirit wear, and sign up to volunteer or donate to support all the exciting activities we have planned for our children this year.

Please come prepared to spend a few extra minutes reviewing the information that we will have available and remember to bring your checkbook if you'd like to join the PTA, make a donation, or purchase yearbooks or t-shirts. Visit PTA's Volunteer Page for a preview of available volunteer opportunities.

Summer Reading Resources

Our Reading Info page has lots of links with good recommendations for summer reading.

The San Diego County Library is hosting another Summer Reading Program this year. Kick-off is on Saturday, June 21st at 11am. Your SDCL card will also get you access to a site called NoveList (click on Novelist K-8, enter your library card number and PIN when prompted) that can help you choose interesting and reading level appropriate books..
Book Adventure is a great site hosted by Sylvan Learning that lets kids take quizzes on books that they've read (similar to the AR quizzes that they're used to taking at school). Kids earn points that can be redeemed for prizes. Create a parent account to monitor your child's results and set your own goals and rewards.
The San Diego Public Library (branches in Carmel Mountain, RB, Rancho Penasquitos) also has a Summer Reading Program.
Barnes and Noble is sponsoring a Summer Reading Program that lets kids earn a free paperback book.

CONTACT YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS!
PTA recently sent home a handout describing the current budget crisis and what you can do to help protect our students from larger class sizes, loss of reading specialists and other interventions, and the elimination of transportation, music, and art programs. The budget is by no means a "done deal," and will be discussed and voted on by legistlators over the coming months. Our letters can make a difference! Please take a minute to complete and return the form letters sent home, or download and personalize the letters to

    Assemblyman Plescia and
    Senator Hollingsworth (in Word format)

If you live outside of the TBES boundary, you can look up your legislators here and use the form letter provided by the Ninth District PTA to let our legislators know that education funding must be protected.

For more information, please see our PTA Advocacy page and the Superintendent's Budget Message on the PUSD site.

UPDATE:

Thank you to everyone who sent in letters to their legislator. On April 8, we faxed and mailed 128 letters to Assembleyman Plescia and 125 letters to Senator Hollingsworth. Thank you also to those parents and teachers who sent in letters on their own. Every little bit counts for one large voice!

If you have not yet had the opportunity to send in your letter, please take a moment to do so. You may still send it in with your student or send it yourself.

Thanks again for doing your part to help our school.

Through this program, students get the chance to develop important skills essential for school success in kindergarten and beyond.

Please note that Tierra Bonita does not offer PEPP on-site. Parents wishing to transfer their child into a PEPP class at another school site MUST place their name on a District transfer list. To place your child on the transfer list, call the PUSD Attendance and Welfare Office at 858-668-4156 as soon as possible. See our PEPP page for more information.

Food Drive
Food Pantry shelves at Interfaith Community Services are bare! Interfaith Community Services assists people in need throughout North County. They've had a sharp increase in the number of people in need, from 1,460 in December to over 1,800 in January. Therefore, Tierra Bonita PTA has changed our ongoing Cold Cereal Food Drive to an all-encompassing Non-Perishable Food Drive.

Please take a moment to look in your pantry for unopened and non-expired food items and bring them to school. Or purchase a few extra items each week to donate. If every child from Tierra Bonita brings in 3 items per month, we'll be able to feed over 1,800 individuals for 3 days a month. Items that are needed are:
  • canned tuna or chicken
  • macaroni and cheese
  • peanut butter and jelly
  • canned fruit and vegetables
  • canned chili or beans
  • cold or hot cereal
  • canned pasta meals
  • spaghetti sauce
  • dried pasta
  • hearty soups, Top Ramen
  • any packaged pre-made food items, as many families do not have full kitchens
Please drop off food items in the bins outside the school office from now until June 7th.
Contact Stephanie Stearns at stephstearns1@gmail.com or Cheri Kellhofer in the office or at ckellhofer@powayusd.com with any questions.

Budget Crisis
Governor Schwarzenegger has recently proposed the largest cut in education funding in California history, recommending a $4.4 billion reduction for K-12 education, on top of a $400 million reduction for education in the current year. Poway Unified School District is facing a $15 million cut in spending for next year. At Tierra Bonita, that would mean reduction in staff, larger class sizes, and more combo classes. Also at risk is the Primary Interaction Program (PIP), which helps kindergarteners through 3rd graders develop life skills such as empathy, impulse control, and anger management. For more information on the proposed budget cuts and what you can do to help, please see the PTA Advocacy page. For the most up-to-date information on the current proposed cuts and how they will effect our schools, visit The Education Coalition's website at protectourstudents.org.

Preschool Registration 2008-2009
Tierra Bonita offers a full day preschool program for 3 and 4 year olds. The new session starts June 16th, 2008. Students who will be at least 3 years old when they begin preschool and are completely potty trained are eligible to register. On-going preschool enrollment will take place at the District Preschool Office Monday through Friday. Please call 858.748.0010 x2722 for information about openings and to schedule an enrollment appointment. The District office is located at 13626 Twin Peaks Road, in Poway (corner of Midland and Twin Peaks), Bldg. E. See the Preschool Enrollment page for more information and applicable forms.

Report Cards
Report cards went home Friday, March 7th. If your student needs more practice in a certain area, be sure to visit PUSD's Parent Resource Guides. They were created to correspond to the new Elementary Progress Reports. For each grade level standard there are several links that will provide instruction and practice opportunities for students.

Spring Chorus
Spring Chorus begins Tuesday, March 11th after school. 2nd through 5th graders can join us each Tuesday and Thursday right after school in the multi-purpose room and be a part of the Spring Session of Tierra Bonita's terrific chorus!

Physical Fitness Testing
Each year students in grade 5, 7 and 9 throughout the state participate in the California State Fitness Test. The test will be administered in the Poway Unified School District in regular P.E. class during the months of March, April or May. All students in grades 5, 7 and 9 take the physical fitness test, whether or not they are currently enrolled in a physical education class. Students who are physically unable to take all parts of the physical fitness test will be given as much of the test as their conditions permit.
For more information regarding the fitness test, visit the California Department of Education's site.

Principal Chat Summary
For those of you who missed the Principal's Chat, here are a few of the topics that were discussed:

Foremost on everyone's mind was the looming budget crisis. Governor Schwarzenegger has recently proposed the largest cut in education funding in California history, recommending a $4.4 billion reduction for K-12 education, on top of a $400 million reduction for education in the current year. Poway Unified School District is facing a $12 million cut in spending for next year.

Parents also had questions about Accelerated Reader, the program we use to develop students' reading skills. The theory behind the AR program came from studies showing that academic achievement is tied to the number of words a student reads, so increasing reading should lead to overall academic improvement. For more information, see our AR page.

Mrs. Pedretti also talked about her desire to offer students a variety of organized activities (team sports, chess) during the lunch recess and the need for volunteers to supervise these activities. See our Volunteer page if you're interested in helping our students develop their interests and meet new like-minded friends.

The Yearbook Needs Your Photos
The yearbook committee is seeking photos from all grade levels. Photos on CD or emailed to ruskin@cox.net in .jpg format are preferred, but we are happy to accept printed copies as well. Printed photos can be dropped in the yearbook folder in the Volunteer Office. For all photos, please let us know what class and particular activity they are for. The more pictures we have, the better our yearbook will be!

Memory Tiles
PTA Site Beautification needs your help to create memory tiles at Tierra Bonita. 6"x6" tiles will be placed on concrete benches, planters, and walls around campus. Showcase your child's creativity by painting a tile, and leave a lasting memory at Tierra Bonita.
When:Friday, March 7, 2008, 2:30-4:30 pm
Where:Tierra Bonita Multi-Purpose Room, Covered lunch area

Artwork for Education Greeting Card Fundraiser
Over the past few weeks, our students have been creating beautiful masterpieces for our Artwork for Education Greeting Card Fundraiser. If you would like your child's artwork to be printed in the brochure and made available for your purchase, you must return a signed permission slip by Wednesday, January 30th. Returning the permission slip does not obligate you to buy anything, but allows the company to publish your child's artwork in the brochure that is distributed to students at Tierra Bonita. The brochure will be available in mid March, at which time you may choose to purchase boxes of 12 cards with envelopes for $20.50 each. Tierra Bonita receives $8 for each box sold.

Is your student's lunch account balance running low?
Remember, you can check the balance at MyLunchMoney.com. If you haven't registered yet, see our Lunch Info page for details. You can fund the account online with a credit card at MyLunchMoney.com, or avoid the $1.95 processing fee and bring cash or check made out to PUSD Food and Nutrition Department to school. All methods of payment will be reflected at the MyLunchMoney site.

Ink Cartridge and Cell Phone Recycling Program
The PTA will be starting its ink cartridge and cell phone recycling program... watch for more information coming home soon.

Book Donations
Do you have books lying around the house that your children have outgrown or no longer read? Donate them to the Tierra Bonita library! Book donations are accepted all year long - just drop them off at the library. Donated books are either added to the library's collection, or sold to raise money for Tierra Bonita at our end of the year book sale.
And if you have a few minutes - or a few hours- to spare, drop by the library to volunteer.

Drop Off and Pick Up Procedure Change!
Effective Monday, October 1st, the drop off and pick up procedure has changed. Please look here for more information.

Box Tops For Education
Have you seen this logo? Although most people think Box Tops only hang out on the tops of cereal boxes, they've recently been spotted on boxes of Ziploc bags, bags of Chex Mix, and boxes of Kleenex. We've also had reports of them on Betty Crocker baking mixes and several kinds of fruit snacks. Check your grocery bags - the Box Top is on Tierra Bonita's Most Wanted List and can earn us up to $20,000 a year!

Cut out the box top symbol, check the expiration date and then send them in to your child’s classroom. Also watch your Albertson’s receipts. Each time you buy ten Box Top items, you’ll find a bonus at the bottom of your receipt.

To see a complete list of participating products, track how much money Tierra Bonita has earned, or create an account with opportunities to earn even more money for Tierra Bonita, check out the Box Tops For Education website.

MyLunchMoney.com
MyLunchMoney.com is a great way to keep track of your student's lunch account balance, and you don't need to fund the account online to take advantage of the benefits. Lunch accounts funded by cash or check to the Food and Nutrition Department are also viewable online. Simply create a login account at MyLunchMoney.com and add your student using his ID number. The ID Number is a 7 digit number, which you get by adding a "1" in front of your student's lunch line PIN. For example, if the PIN they enter is 234567, the id number is 1234567. (This is also the id number that you'll see on school records.) See the TBES Lunch Info page for more details.
