Please try to schedule appointments after school hours.  Students arriving late to class or leaving class early disrupt the classroom.  If your student must leave campus early, please let the teacher know in the morning so they can have your student sent up to the office on time.  Please do not call the office to have your student dismissed, we will call when you arrive.

All visitors to our campus must check in through the Administration Office at the front of the school.

Please take a few minutes at home to carefully check your child’s health before he/she leaves for school each morning. The following are a few suggestions, which may help to guide you:

~Illness during the night
~Fever is present (100 degrees or greater)
~Complaints of nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, headache, diarrhea prior to leaving for school
~Development of a rash on face and/or body
~Has a severe cold, cough and/or sore throat
~Has inflamed eye(s) with discharge from them

Please Remember: An ill child cannot function properly in the classroom. The spread of illness and disease through class or school can be more easily monitored if sick children remain at home during the acute stage of an illness. If the school health tech detects any of the above, your child will be sent home.

People with influenza-like illness are to remain home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100o F [37.8o C]) without the use of fever-reducing medications.

A student’s absence should be reported on the School Absence Hotline by calling: (858) 674-6300 press #2.

August, 2014

Dear Willow Grove Students and Parents,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year!! I am really looking forward to seeing all of our new and returning Grizzlies. Willow Grove is a very special place to learn! Willow Grove continues to be a school built on 5 Roots that are aligned with the PUSD Strategic Vision and goals. They are:

  • Rigor, Relevance and Relationships
  • Cultural Proficiency
  • College Readiness
  • Professional Learning Community, and
  • State of the Art Technology

We are working very hard to ensure your child will enjoy a successful, exciting experience at our school. Our goal, as always, is to create a positive school climate that maximizes instructional time for student learning, while developing strong physical, social, and emotional characteristics in a safe environment.

Our office and custodial staff have been very busy getting ready for a great year, while welcoming some new staff to our school.  Teachers have been in and out all summer, creating a warm learning environment to greet your child on opening day!  We are very excited about the upcoming school year!

To ensure a smooth start to the year, it is important to clarify rules and expectations for student safety and maximized learning. Please review the important information presented in this letter so the school year begins smoothly.

Grades 1 – 5- M, T, W, F – 9:00 AM – 3:20 PM, Th 9:00 AM – 1:40 PM  Classroom Assignments: Classroom assignments will be posted on Tuesday, August 19th at 4 PM for Grades 1 - 5 by the front gates of the school, and Jamba Juice will be available for purchase. The PTA will be there for membership sign ups and event information. Willow Grove staff will not be present at the posting.

Arrival: Students will report to the playground and line up with their teacher by 8:55 at their designated classroom number spot. Playground supervision will begin at 8:40, twenty minutes before school begins. Students in grades 1-5 should walk to the playground, and Kindergarten students should walk to the Kindergarten playground.  Please do not have your child arrive before 8:40, as there will be no adult supervision on either playground until that time. Students will line up in their assigned area on the playground at 8:55. The tardy bell rings and school begins promptly at 9:00. Students are expected to be in their seats ready to learn by that time. After the 9:00 bell, students will need to come to the front office for a late slip before going to class.  Parents are invited to join representatives from our PTA and Educational Foundation and the Principal at 9:15 AM on the first day of school in the MPR for a “Meet and Greet” where we will enjoy refreshments together and celebrate the beginning of the school year.

Dismissal: At dismissal time, teachers will walk their students to the front of the school, where parents will meet their children. We ask parents to wait by the large cement area away from the gates, as there is greater space and visibility there.  Please do not meet your children inside the school or by the classroom, as it is a distraction to the learning environment and causes great congestion. Our goal is to maximize instructional time for student learning and decrease congestion in the hallways.

Traffic Flow: Parents driving students to and from school should follow the procedures of state law. Enter the parking lot to drop off your child by making a right hand turn off of Via Azul in the turn lane only, and exit left or right onto Via Inez.  Please drive all of the way forward in the drop off/pick up zone.  Do not let your child out of the car until you are stopped at the edge of the curb.  Please abide by the directions of our wonderful volunteers and staff. They are working hard to ensure safety of our children. Cars in the traffic circle should never be left unattended at any time. Do not enter the bus drop off circle. If you need to enter the school campus for any reason, please park your car in a designated space in the lot or on the street.  Pedestrians should cooperate with our Student Safety Patrol, located by the crosswalk of Via Inez and Via Fiesta, and demonstrate good citizenship and safety practices for our students.

Visitors and volunteers: PUSD Board Policy 4.415 prohibits volunteers on campus unless they have completed a background check and had a TB Skin Test. All visitors and cleared volunteers must report to the office, sign-in, and wear a visitor's pass. The PTA keeps track of volunteer hours and reports them to the Palomar Council.

Gates and School Safety: The gates to the school are closed to ensure that visitors and volunteers sign in at the front office and wear an appropriate name tag. We cannot take chances with student safety. Please remind your child that NO student may leave the school grounds during the school day without being checked out of the front office.

School Lunch: Hot lunches are available for $2.75 including milk. Children who bring their own lunch may purchase milk ($0.75), juice (4 oz - $0.50/8 oz - $0.75), or bottled water ($0.50) from the cafeteria. You may pay your child's lunch in advance by sending cash or check payable to PUSD Food Services to the front office. For credit card payments, go to . Please note there is a $1.95 fee for each $100.00 transaction. Lunch envelopes are available there. If your child receives free or reduced lunch, you must submit a 2014-2015 application to Food Services. Applications are available on-line at under the Food and Nutrition Department link, or you may request one in the front office of the school. WGES schedules students to play first, then eat. This practice reduces food waste as students do not rush through lunch to eat. It also reduces playground problems entering the classroom, as students relax while enjoying their lunch. Students have twenty minutes to play and twenty minutes to eat. If your child is a slow eater, you might consider having them bring lunch so that they can take the full twenty minutes to eat.

Willow Grove PTA and Educational Foundation: Our PTA and Educational Foundation are two very important organizations in our school. They support many activities and programs that directly impact student learning and our positive school environment. I urge you to join me in becoming a member.  Your participation in these two organizations will help families find the most appropriate way to lend their support to our school that fits their lifestyle. Many parents want to help in classrooms. Many want to help with special events. Others want to contribute financially to enhance programs for our children. Look for additional information from our PTA and Educational Foundation on our website or in the first day packet of information that your child will bring home. Thank you in advance to those of you who become a part of these outstanding organizations. Your support is truly appreciated!

Extended Student Services (ESS): Willow Grove offers an Extended Student Services Program located on campus. ESS is a before and after school child care program that extends the learning day for students. It is available for all students from 6:30 AM - 6:00 PM. For information, contact Marcy Golden at .

Preschool: For preschool information, please contact Susan Campion (full day program) at or Heather Smith (part day program for 4 year old only  8:45-1:45) at

Attendance: It is important you keep us informed about your child when they are not in school. When your child is absent, please call or e-mail the school to inform us of the reason for the absence each day they are not in attendance.  In addition, if they will be tardy more than 30 minutes, please call also.  If your child will be absent from school due to anything other than illness for 5 days or more, please contact the school for a study contract. Our attendance hotline number is 858-674-6300. Press option #2 to report a student’s absence.

Medication: Students who are required to take medication during school hours must be assisted by school personnel. No medication may be given at school without a Medication Authorization form completed by the physician detailing instructions for administration. This form may be picked up from the school office. For safety reasons, an adult must bring the medication to the school office in the original container that the medication is dispensed.  Children may never have medication in their possession at school.  This includes aspirin, inhalers, cough drops, etc.

Do you have a gently used stuffed animal or toy that is simply lying around your house? We've got great news! Student Council is once again teaming up with the organization We Care Bears to provide instant comfort to kids in unbearable situations. We can help by collecting bags of stuffed animals for first responders and other organizations that work with children who may be scared or injured. From October 20- 24, please send in any new or gently used stuffed animals. There will be a donation bag in the office and in each child's classroom. Thanks for your support!

Our 7th annual Book Fair came to a successful close last Friday with record attendance! Thank you to the students and parents for purchasing books, and a big thank you to the volunteers who put in so many hours to keep the store open. Thank you to Jillian Zwerenz for chairing the Book Fair and to Mary Yell for coordinating our Family Portrait night this year.

Thank you to those students who stepped up and reviewed a book during our first Book Talk sessions this past week. What a great job you did representing readers in your grade levels and supporting the Book Fair. Do you want to be a featured Grizzly during our next Book Talk? Look for entry forms in the front office.

Attention Golfers! The tournament is selling out fast! There are only a few foursomes left so if you want to play, sign up now. Go and be sure to purchase your raffle tickets and helicopter balls. You could be a lucky winner of $2500!!

There are families in need at every school in our school district. The Adopt-A-Family program allows us as a school community to provide them assistance during the holidays. To kick off donations this year, we are having a GIFT CARD DRIVE at the FALL FESTIVAL! Please bring any grocery, gas, department store or Target/Walmart-type gift card to donate, and you will be entered to WIN TICKETS TO CINEPOLIS! Please help us support our Poway Unified families in need. See the attached flyer.

We will be having our Harvest Parade on October 31. Students may wear costumes to school if they wish. Please follow a few simple guidelines when selecting a costume for school. For guidelines details, please see the email version of this Connect Ed.
o Avoid masks - If a costume requires a mask, it may only be worn during the parade.
o No weapons, blood or gore - We promote a safe and friendly environment at Willow Grove. Weapons, blood and gore don't support this philosophy. Toy guns, knives, handcuffs, swords, nun chucks, etc. will be taken and returned at the end of the day. Any child with bloody make-up will have to remove it.
o Costumes that portray violent characters in movies/ TV are not appropriate at school. Save them for after school events and trick or treating.
o Display respect for other cultures - Stereotyping or ridiculing other races or cultures is unacceptable.
Whichever costume you and your child select, please remember to keep it simple. Five hours in an elaborate costume can be tiring at any age. We are looking forward to a fun filled day.

It's going to be a grrrrreat Grizzly week.  See everyone tomorrow!
