    THANK YOU!!!

A sincere thank you to all the parents that served on this years’ AVID Parent Board.  Many hours of planning and work produced great workshops and parties throughout the year.  Thank you!

Westview AVID is Selected as a

National Demonstration Site!

The AVID Program at Westview was recently selected as a National Demonstration Site School by the National AVID Organization.  On March 10, a group of National AVID leaders visited Westview and observed the AVID program in action. After the visit, which included a luncheon with selected teachers, students and parents, a press conference was held in the Westview Theater to announce the National AVID leader’s decision. Following are some of the comments made at that press conference:

1. The site coordinators, Dorothy Carlson and Nikolette Lowry provide energetic, positive leadership to a site team that has embraced AVID strategies and philosophies. They have worked collaboratively with the staff to expand the site team to include parents, students, site administrators and a wide swath of content teachers. The site team is a strong example of shared leadership.

2. The Poway Unified School District and site leadership support the AVID program, both philosophically and financially. Their presence is supportive, knowledgeable and innovative. This connection is an invaluable asset to a demonstration school.

3. A leading indicator of the college ready culture is this site's open access policy. This is evidenced by a significant increase in AP enrollment and test taking while maintaining an 80% pass rate .

  1. 4.The participation of parents is a notable strength for the school community.

The National AVID leaders that visited Westview are:

Julie Elliott, California State Director/National Director Demonstration Schools

Robin Kisinger, California State Director of Programs

Joyce Suber, AVID Region 9 Coordinator, SDCOE

Kristen Winn, AVID Region 9 Coordinator, SDCOE

Todd Gutschow, AVID Board Member, Vice Chair

The AVID students that made up the team that met with the National Leaders are

Vanessa Onstad, Michelle Feinberg, Mahad Ghani and Reggie Almojuela.

The Westview AVID program has 210 students and is the largest high school program in the Poway Unified School District.

We are appreciative of the teachers, students and parents that helped to make this day a success.
