W E S T V I E W - New Grading Policy

One of the core values that we hold dear at Westview is the idea of continuous improvement. With that in mind we are constantly looking for ways to improve our practices and our programs in order to maximize student learning and to make students’ experience at Westview as positive and productive as possible.

Over the course of the last several weeks, our staff has been involved in some intensive conversation and evaluation of the issue of incompletes and the five week period for remediation. We believe wholeheartedly in setting high expectations for all students and at the same time recognizing that not all students learn at the same pace. With that in mind we developed a system of giving students additional time of five weeks to meet standards. We have since recognized that this practice was not achieving the desired results. As a result of our conversations and discussions we have decided to make some changes.

Below you will find an outline of the details and specifics related to this change in our practice. We believe that these changes will better serve our students and help us towards improving the educational experience for our students.

1.	Instruction continues to be based on State Standards.
2.	Multiple, standards based, common assessments continue to be designed and implemented throughout each quarter by content teams.
3.	Common assessments are based on Standards. Their influence on student’s grades is determined by each academic area. Standards completion will no longer be the single factor used to determine the passing of a class.
4.	Policies relating to the re-teaching and re-testing of material on common assessments during a quarter are determined by each academic area.
5.	The school wide grading scale will include a letter grade of “D”.
6.	Five week extension beyond the end of term for students to clear missing items is no longer in effect.
7.	“I” (incompletes) are at the discretion of each teacher. Criteria may include: a. Absences (family tragedy, etc.) b. Work completion c. Mathematical chance to pass
8.	The above changes (1-7) went into effect in Fall 2005. Any incompletes given in June may still be cleared in the fall.
