GOLD Success Stories

Keri Downs

When you think of Keri Downs, think of the lyrics from the Sound of Music “How do you keep a wave upon the sand?  How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?  How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?”  Keri, like most high school students, is full of energy and life.  Add a little organization and you have a 4 year band student with a GPA of 4.2.  In addition to her 6 AP classes, Keri will have gotten credit for 2 college courses.  She competes in Irish Step Dancing, has earned her Gold Award in Girl Scouts, and takes piano lessons.  She is a member of the NHS, Vice President of CSF and Co President of the Westview Gold.  Keri has been active in Winter Drumline for her 4 years at Westview.  This year she will be competing with SDSU.  Even though this group requires up to 10 hours of rehearsal each week in addition to the competitions throughout Southern California, Keri has made friends for life and feels the hard work and commitment with friends is all part of the fun.  She is sharing this fun with younger band students by teaching percussion lessons to middle school students.  Keri loves biology and hopes to attend UCLA.  And just when you think she will never slow down, you’ll finally catch her relaxing by watching The Office or America’s Next Top Model.

Rebekah Duncan

Rebekah has always worked hard to make her goals and we are very proud of her.  As much as she loves her music, she does prefer to be outside on the lacrosse field.  Achieving her goals required a lot of commitment, time management and sometimes even tears.  She has enjoyed her year as clarinet section head and looks forward to the lacrosse season where she was selected for captain.

Bekah will study chemistry and forensic science at Trine University where she will be playing Division III lacrosse.  We are proud of the kind, caring and compassionate young lady she has become.

Mark Govea

Balance and commitment.  These words describe Mark Govea and his approach to his education.  Mark is a 4 year band student with a current GPA of 4.20.  In addition to his 6 AP classes, he will be graduating high school having completed 4 college courses. During this marching season, he is enrolled in the 3rd calculus class at UCSD.  Mark has made the most of his summers as well, taking a General and Special Relativity course at Stanford and a Mechanical Engineering course at UCSD.  This past summer he traveled to Europe with the Southern California Ambassadors of Music program, playing concerts in 5 of the 7 countries they visited.  There has also been time for extra-curricular activities, including 2 years of lacrosse, 1 year as Head of Sound Crew for the Westview Theatre Company, and a member of NHS, CSF and Tri-M.  For those of you wondering if you can be successful in academics and be committed to band, Mark is a good example of that balance.  And while all these things are important, Mark would not have traded anything for these 4 years as a member of Westview Gold!
