CONGRATULATIONS

5/26/09

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

What a wonderful way to end our concert season.  Our first “standing room only” concert!  I have been fortunate to receive many comments – these include:

From Band Parents
What a fantastic show Thursday and Friday nights!  The shows get better and better every year and I was very delighted to see Colorband and Orchestra included.  It is a fun night for the kids and I am sure they all had fun preparing for it as well as performing.

The concerts last night - WOW!!!  I was there both nights and really saw the difference between the two shows.  I do believe that this one was the best one yet - seeing orchestra and the color guard participate was awesome.

When the students from elementary schools came, they had an awesome experience. They left with a shock and awe feeling, says the campus supervisor who saw them getting on their busses. Parents were talking about how wonderful the show was and told the campus supervisor “make sure you go and see it”.

From our Principal, Dawn Kastner
This afternoon in our front office I spoke to a young boy who was in the audience yesterday, and then to his father.   The father told me that the boy was so excited about the music and what instrument he wants to play in band when he grows up that the whole family came to the concert last night.  (The boy’s favorite number was the Mario Bros. piece performed by the trombone section. )  Kudos to all of your student musicians for their creativity, hard work and leadership!

From District Administrator Elaine Cofrancesco
I want you to know that I attended two “Introduction to Instruments”  performances at WV yesterday and afterwards,  I called a few staff members from the Poway Center for the Performing Arts and asked if they could attend the 12:45 performance.  So, two did attend and like me, they were absolutely amazed and pleased with the performances.  We will be sharing more at our Board meeting next week.  I know how important this is for them since they do help with funding.  I promise you that next year, I will personally make sure we have more PCPA Board members in attendance.

From Audience Goers
Just wanted to let you know I really enjoyed the concert.  I went to the Thursday one.  I have never seen a band concert like it before in the 30 years I've been involved with music.  Spectacular!

Thumbs up!  High fives!  High tens!  High twenties?!  The year end band show was spectacular!  One could tell that a lot of effort and hardwork had been put into it by both the staff and students.  The show was filled with wonderful music, lively entertainment, and full of creativity.  It was such a colorful event with the many costumes and little details like painted faces.  There was not a moment of boredom.  It was a well planned show for both the young and the old.  Thank you for all the hardwork and keep up the good work!  I'm looking forward to seeing it all over again when I received the DVD that I've ordered from Old Harbor!
I just wanted to say that the band concert last week was amazing!  You and the kids worked so hard!  Thank you for a very enjoyable performance!

Westview GOLD’s Carnegie Hall Debut “Big Success!”
by Director, Jeri Webb

On Wednesday, April 8 Westview GOLD Wind Ensemble took the Gold at the New York Wind Band Festival held at Carnegie Hall!  What a wonderful way to end our Festival Season!   All three adjudicators gave Westview a GOLD rating!

I am extremely proud of our student musicians.  In preparation for our performance the students demonstrated dedication by coming to rehearsals prepared.  They also demonstrated support and patience during rehearsals by allowing me to nit-pick the music in order to present the best performance possible.

Comments from the adjudicators:

Professor William Johnson (California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA) “What a great ensemble!!  As a fellow Californian, I am extremely proud of the performance of this ensemble, especially being a young school.  This is a strong area (Poway Unified) for high school band programs and you are now one of them!   California is proud of you!”

Dr. Thomas Root (Weber State University of Ogden, Utah) “Great job – a very fine band – superb!”

Dr. Christian Zembower (East Tennessee State University of Johnson City, Tennessee) “A really great, musical performance – I enjoyed it!”

Thank You’s!
Our trip coordinator – Barbara Pellegrino!  Barbara worked closely with World Projects organization on the trip itinerary and she handled the collection of payments.  Barbara did a wonderful job and kept everyone well informed.   She was also the one who successfully solicited support from Southwest as well as Jet Blue Airlines.  Thank you Barbara!

Our chaperones – Flora Biglaryan, Belle Chu and Barbara Pellegrino.  This trio of fantastic moms made a terrific team.  They were the first ones up, the last ones to bed.  Even though there was a lot of work to keep the students safe, warm and healthy, our chaperones were always ready with a smile, food and drink!

Our Boosters – Kathy Gima, president.  When we first got the acceptance to perform at Carnegie Hall our Booster Board gave unanimous support and said “We’ve got to make this happen!”  Well happen, it did.

Mrs. Annette Inouye – 5th grade music teacher.  Annette attended our trip at her own expense and was there to support us every step of the way.  I especially enjoyed her delight and enthusiasm over our group and program.  Obviously our group would not be what it is without her as well as the middle school teachers who continued what she started!

Michael Schmidt, Jay Posteraro, Doug Hargis, Lilly Lazzarri, Lisa Posteraro, Kim Pigorsch, Joanne Hernandez, Aden Provencio, Jacob Lapre, Brett McCarty, Art Fuerte, Mike McCoy, Scott Sutherland, Michael Atesalp – for the tremendous work you have done to inspire and prepare our students for this incredible journey and performance.

Bertrand’s Music Store – they gave us $500 to pay for rental equipment in New York.
Penasquitos Town Council – they gave us a scholarship donation of $300.
Educational Outfitter’s – they reduced the price of our Carnegie Hall sweatshirts.
