Indoor Marching Percussion (IMP)

Return to the previous page

Indoor Marching Percussion (IMP) members prepare for indoor performances and compete in the Winter Drum Line Circuit.  IMP begins at the end of marching band.  Placement is by audition only.

The Indoor Marching Percussion students will be listed below in alphabetical order when known.

WHAT IS INDOOR PERCUSSION…

Indoor percussion ensembles are comprised of marching percussion (snares, tenors, basses), concert percussion (timpani, marimbas, xylophones, etc.) and sometimes other instruments (electric guitar/bass, synthesizers, etc.). The marching percussion section of the ensemble also incorporates choreography and movement into their performance. The ensemble’s performances are mostly competition based and usually take place in high schools or college gymnasiums. Check out a video of our last year’s championship performance on www.youtube.com/ westview drumline ADLA Championships

DID YOU KNOW...

  • Winter/spring percussion ensembles are not a new thing. There have been competitive circuits in southern California for more than 25 years.
  • The indoor percussion ensembles and “percussion theater” are fairly new activities that emerged from a fusion of marching percussion ensembles and winter guards.
  • The indoor percussion ensemble is one of the fastest growing activities among pageantry arts.
  • There are literally hundreds of ensembles throughout California and the number of these ensembles grows each year.

ATTENDANCE…

Although it seems like we have a lot of rehearsals, the time spent is going to be half of what some of our competitors are putting in. Because of that, the success of the season depends on attendance at all rehearsals and performances, and a great attitude and desire to succeed. You are expected to participate in all activities, as absences hurt your performance as well as the group. Because of our relatively short amount of ensemble rehearsal time, you are also expected to come to rehearsals prepared. Individual practice is expected.

We understand conflicts occur, and communication of these conflicts is vital for the group’s success. Any absences for necessary situations must be communicated to the Director well in advance of the rehearsals.

SO WHAT DOES IT COST…

There are a lot of expenses that are inherent with doing this type of activity and the majority of the funding comes from the membership. We must pay for competitions, drum heads, sticks, mallets, trucks to transport instruments to and from shows, etc. That is just a sample of the overhead. IMP is an extra-curricular activity and therefore it is open to those students who receive a grade of Satisfactory on their report cards. In order to participate, students must be current with their Fair Share Donations or have made arrangements with the Booster President. We are planning on having fundraising opportunities available to help further defray the cost of the tuition. These opportunities are in the planning stages, and we will keep you informed as soon as details are known.

Tuition Payment Schedule (this includes the cost of a uniform):
December 1, 2008 $?
January 7, 2009 $?
TOTAL $?

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT FEES…

  • Students will be getting over 100 hours of instruction by multiple staff members. If you were to pay ONE private instructor for that time it would cost you over $3,000.
  • Some Drumline/Colorguard groups charge tuitions of up to $1,500 per season.
  • The retail cost of replacing drum heads for the whole group is over $1800.
  • IMP Tuition makes a nice Holiday Gift!

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE…

Rehearsals are usually on Monday and Wednesday Nights 6pm-9pm and Saturdays 9am-1pm (every other Saturday beginning mid January)
Rehearse-a-thon: TBD (beginning of January)

SHOWS…

We intend on performing at 4 to 5 tournaments (including Championships).
The actual schedule will be finalized ASAP, pending registration acceptance (some shows have been booked to full capacity since November 1st). Every effort will be made to avoid scheduling conflicts with school activities (School Musical, Festivals, etc). Shows are typically all day on Saturdays.
