PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

sun“DON’T BLINK. Life goes faster than you think.” That was the song I heard this morning on the radio while driving to work. I thought to myself, “Boy, does it ever! How can the Class of 2010 be graduating in a few short weeks?” Kenny Chesney continued singing, “So I've been tryin' ta slow it down.
I've been tryin' ta take it in.” It’s a good reminder that as we prepare for AP exams, prom and graduation, we need to take a breath and enjoy the journey our students are taking.

As we start to wrap up this final quarter of the school year, I wanted to share some reminders:

Vacation Planning: Please wait until after June 8 to take your students out of town on vacation. In most instances, teachers will be unable to arrange for early final exams, so students who leave early will have to take their finals upon their return during the summer. When this happens, a grade of Incomplete is recorded on the transcript and is not changed until Fall when the teacher returns to grade the final exams. Besides the obvious potential impact this can have on a student’s ability to do well on the exam, this can also cause problems with CIF eligibility.

Prom Attire: As you shop for prom attire, please remember that the school dress code will be strictly enforced at the door. Again, students need to fully cover the “Three B’s” (breasts, buttocks and bellies). Extreme cutouts are not acceptable. If you have any doubts about a dress, please err on the side of caution. Prom is a very special night, and it is always a shame when we have to send someone home to change clothes. Thanks for helping us support a school-appropriate night to remember!

Finally, I want to send a BIG thank you to our students for their excellent attendance and effort during our STAR testing week. Westview has the best students in California! Go Wolverines!!!

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

9 Million Reasons to Speak Up

This year’s PTA State Convention was held in April at the Sacramento Convention Center, just a couple of blocks away from our state’s capitol. I had never attended a PTA convention before and I’m grateful for the opportunity that was given to me. I was able to attend 3 workshops and 2 general meetings during my 2-day stay. I listened and learned a lot. Here’s some information I’d like to pass onto you:

From Wilma Chan - VP, Policy: Children Now - she shared that lack of medical coverage is the # 1 health issue of youth. Asthma and dental care is the #1 reason kids miss school. We lose millions of dollars from these absences.

From Anthony Adams - California State Assembly: At age 18, foster kids get kicked out of foster homes because foster parents don’t get paid for them anymore - many become homeless.

From Ginny Puddefoot- California Research Bureau: Provided information to policy makers on homeless youth ages 24 years and younger. These kids don’t consider themselves runaways, nor homeless by choice. They left their homes because they were victimized at home and feel safer on the street than at home. Ask our schools how you can help these students specifically and supply them with their needs.

From Jean Ross - Exec. Director, California Budget Project: Reported that half of our state’s income comes from April’s tax collection every year. This year, we are 3 billion dollars short of the forecasted tax income. All state budgets will be cut.

From Carissa Phelps, J.D. - Key note speaker at the second general meeting: Shared how she overcame her circumstances as a juvenile prostitute at the age of 12 and is now an attorney who currently works with girls charged with prostitution. Visit her website Carissa@carissaproject.com. See what changes can be made and see that it is done.

Find out who your senator(s) and assembly person are. My zip code is 92129 so my senator is Mark Wyland and Dennis Hollingsworth and my assembly person is Nathan Fletcher.

Do you feel it?? Do you feel the passion that some of these speakers feel?? Do you hear their voices asking, pleading for our help? We cannot be complacent. Now is the time for us to speak up for our youth.

Today, right now, you can begin to be an advocate for our own Westview students by writing to your senators and assembly person. An email was sent to each family tonight by Don Phillips, asking for our help with writing letters to our legislators.

Here is the link: http://www.palomarcouncil.com/
advocacy.htm.

You will need to send 1 letter to each of your legislators.

Simply find your zip code and your legislator's name and addresses can be found next to it. A sample letter is already done for you; all you need to do is print one out for each legislator, sign each letter, list your address and either fax or mail it (yes, via the US postal service) directly to them.

Don’t wait, please do it now!! Ask a neighbor that may not have children. Ask anyone that lives within the 92064, 92127, 92128 or 92129 zip code to please write!!

Whether your passion is healthy teeth for all students, listening to and helping homeless students and foster youth, or overcoming horrific personal circumstances, you can and must speak up for the 9 million California students in our state. Let’s start right here in our own Poway Unified School District. Please!!

Allison Aquino-Arcio

ALL STUDENTS

Course Selections

Students have recently completed the course request selection process for the 2010-2011 school year. Our thanks go to all parents, counselors and students for making the process a smooth one. Students may review the courses they selecting by logging onto their Family Connection account, clicking on the courses tab and then clicking on the request link.

The master schedule is generated from student course selections. Changing courses after the master schedule has been built becomes very difficult. Please review the list of courses with your student for any changes.

seniors

All seniors should have received an e-mail with a link to the Senior Check-Out Questionnaire. This document is part of the check-out process prior to graduation. We compile information from students such as their plans after high school, scholarships awarded, etc. This year, we are requesting that Senior Surveys be completed by May 14th. If your senior has received any scholarship offers throughout high school, we will invite the family to our Senior Awards Reception honoring this accomplishment. If you have any questions regarding this event, which will be held on June 1st, please contact Kathy Bloomfield at kbloomfield@powayusd.com.
