PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

On October 8–11, 2006 , Westview had a very positive visit by seven representatives of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The purpose of this visit was to review the intensive self-study that Westview conducted during the 2005-06 school year and to recommend a term of accreditation that will range from one to six years in length.

Although we will not learn the length of our term of accreditation until spring, we have received a copy of the report that the visiting team will submit to the WASC Commission.  The report validated the results of our self-study, and commended Westview for seven areas of strength. We received four recommendations that were based on the needs we identified in our self-study.

T
wo of the commendations were for the commitment and expertise of the entire Westview staff in providing students with a very high quality educational experience and for the success of our open-access AP program. The recommendations were generally related to ensuring that we continue to refine and enhance our professional skills in supporting all students, including those who struggle. The full text of the WASC report is available in the school office for your review.

I want to make special note of one of the commendations.  It stated, “Westview’s community stakeholders, including the Foundation and the PTSA, are to be commended for their ongoing and enthusiastic support of the school’s students, staff, and programs.”  Our visiting team was amazed and impressed by the support they witnessed from our parents, both in focus group meetings and by the daily luncheons, gift baskets, and parent presence they observed while here on our campus. (The PTSA, under the hospitality leadership of Dora Gray, fed these people
well!)

We are pleased that the visiting team recognized the important role parents play in Westview ’s success. On behalf of the entire Westview staff, I want to thank all of the parents who give up their time to help our students in countless ways.  You are wonderful, and we are so very grateful for your support.

What the heck’s a Hookah?

The caterpillar smoked one in “Alice in Wonderland” and your student may visit one of twenty Hookah lounges in San Diego and do the same. A Hookah is basically a water pipe that is used to smoke tobacco and other substances. It can be very ornate and have many mouthpieces and hoses. The indigenous people of Asia and Africa have been using them for at least four centuries.

There has been a long standing misconception that smoking substances that have first passed through water makes it safe. Unfortunately, this misconception is still fueled by Hookah establishments as well as Hookah users. The smoke that emerges from a water pipe contains numerous toxicants known to cause “oral, esophageal and lung cancer, heart disease, chronic bronchitis, and of course nicotine addiction” this according to the Director of California Department of Health Services.

A smoking session at a Hookah lounge last between 20 to 80 minutes. The person who purchases the tobacco must be at least 18 years or older. However, there is typically no age verification for those who actually smoke it. If you go to a lounge and have never used a Hookah, they provide instructions. How convenient.

A recent survey found Hookah Lounges in San Diego; 55.6% are located near a college, 100% are located near a high school, 55.6% serve alcohol, and 94.4% serve food (Tobacco Related Diseases research Program). In addition, lounges have innocuous name like “Hubbly Bubbly Café and Grille”, “The Egyptian Tea Room”, and “Cairo Café”. The tobacco that is used in lounges is usually flavored. Flavors like banana, cherry, citrus, and bubble gum are among the favorites.

What parents and students should know about Hookahs:

Hookah tobacco contains the same chemicals found in all tobacco, including nicotine.
Hookah smoke contains significant amounts of nicotine, tar and heavy metals such as arsenic, cobalt, chromium, lead and nickel.
Smoking one head hookah flavored tobacco for 45 minutes will raise nicotine levels in the blood 20% higher than smoking 21 cigarettes.

Hookah use is on the rise among college and high school students alike. Students do not seem to realize that they are actually “smoking”. Parents need to talk to their children about the risks and the facts. For more information, please contact Student Services.

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Westview Community,

November is a time for giving thanks, so I want to thank some of the PTSA board members who have been very busy!

Debbie Vogel has done a wonderful job in compiling all of the information for our directory.  Our new process of entering the information online worked quite well for its first year! We've worked out the glitches and think next year it will be even easier!  Thank you, Debbie, for all you've done. The directory should be distributed in a few weeks.  (Look for further details in this newsletter.)

And thank you to our Reflections Chair, Jennifer Duffy. She's been busy receiving entries, coordinating the judging and planning the Awards Ceremony, which will be held on Thursday, November 7, in the theater. This is a wonderful way for our students to be recognized in several categories for outstanding, original works of art. This program is sponsored by National PTA.

Our WASC accreditation review and visit is over, and I want to thank our Hospitality Chair, Dora Gray, for the excellent job she did in "feeding the masses" in a very delicious and professional way. Also, thank you to our PTSA WASC Liaison, Cheryl White, for all of her hard work in making it a very smooth and successful process.

We are sponsoring Mock SAT Testing on Saturday, November 11, and twice more during the school year. Thank you, Cathy Carpenter, for coordinating these. (More details in this newsletter.)

The Grad Nite Committee is already hard at work planning and raising funds. Please help out by contributing your time and money to this very worthy cause at keeping our graduates safe and alcohol and drug-free as they celebrate this milestone in their lives. It's not just "a senior thing." As all students will eventually benefit from this program, all parents should be involved. We will be participating in the Foundation's Rummage Sale on November 4, so plan on supporting Westview Grad Nite by attending and buying!  (More details in this newsletter.)

Congratulations to Millie Domingo, this year's Homecoming Queen!  Millie is the Student/ASB Representative on our Executive Board. The band, the floats, the pageantry, the fireworks, the dance troupe all made it a very festive and fun evening. The spirit and enthusiasm of the students are very contagious!

California State PTA has taken positions on three propositions that we will be voting on November 7 -- Yes on 1D and 86, and No on 88. No matter what your personal views are on these matters, please exercise the important right of citizenship by voting!  (More details in this newsletter!)

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I think staff, students and parents deserve a week off!

HONOR CHOIR

On November 17th and 18th, ten Westview students will perform in the Southern California Vocal Association Honor Choir. Their names are:

Kelly Tran

Alicia Archambault

Mark Suennen

Rufina Bavin

Peter Yoon

Gabrielle O’Leary

Kezia Liu

Blake Harwell

Andrew Sykes

Tasha Blanch

These students were chosen only after challenging auditions that tested their knowledge in tonal memory, sight singing and rhythm. The audition process was not only difficult but also nerve racking. When asked about the auditions, Gabrielle O’Leary said, “I was really nervous because I wasn’t sure how well I had done in relation to all the other kids.”

Only two hundred and forty students were chosen from over five hundred auditions. After being selected, the students were each given a packet of music to practice and then on October 28th, the students will meet in La Crescenta for a day of intense rehearsal with some very distinguished conductors.  Some of these conductors include Jonathon Talberg from CSULB, Dr. Anna Hamre from CSU Fresno, and David Weiller from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.

Although the Honor Choir experience takes a lot of hard work, the students agree that the overall experience is worth the effort. Kezia Liu said, “It was a whole bunch of practicing but in the end it was a really fun experience and I learned a lot.”

After that day of intense rehearsal, the students will meet again in Santa Monica
on Nov. 17 and 18 in order to perform for their friends and family. The students who made it into the SCVA Honor Choir also have the opportunity to audition for All-State Honor Choir, which will take place in Ontario on the weekend of March 15 to the 17th.

CHARACTER COUNTS! AT WESTVIEW

If your child has been a student in our district for a while, you are probably aware that Poway Unified adopted Character Counts! (a national character education program) a few years ago through a generous donation from a community member. The “Six Pillars of Character" of this program are: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.  The Student Services staff at Westview, along with the Westview PTSA, help to implement this program on campus in order to develop positive character in the school community.

Character development at school can be complemented by similar character education at home. Remember, our teens are still being “molded” into young adults and are very impressionable. Parents can help by: 1) setting a good example through their own behavior and actions, 2) discussing values and communicating high standards, 3) establishing clear expectations, 4) rewarding (reinforcing) good behavior, and 5) coaching on how to be responsible, kind and caring.

The Six Pillars will be discussed in more depth in future newsletter articles. In the meantime, www.charactercounts.org is an excellent resource.

PTA POSITIONS ON BALLOT MEASURES

By Linda Cialeo and Lorene Joosten
Palomar Council PTA Legislative Representatives

The California State PTA has voted to SUPPORT Propositions 1D and 86, and OPPOSE Proposition 88. These propositions will appear on the November 7thth ballot:

SUPPORT 1D - Kindergarten-University Public Education Facilities Bond Act of 2006:  This ten billion four hundred sixteen million dollar ($10,416,000,000) bond issue will provide needed funding to relieve public school overcrowding and to repair older schools. It will improve earthquake safety and fund vocational educational facilities in public schools.

SUPPORT 86 - Tobacco Tax Act of 2006: Imposes additional 13 cent tax on each cigarette distributed ($2.60 per pack), and indirectly increases tax on other tobacco products. Provides funding to qualified hospitals for emergency services, nursing education and health insurance to eligible children. Revenue also allocated to specified purposes including tobacco use prevention programs, enforcement of tobacco-related laws, and research, prevention and treatment of various conditions including cancers (breast, cervical, prostate and colorectal), heart disease, stroke, asthma and obesity.

OPPOSE 88 - Classroom Learning and Accountability Act:  Provides additional public school funding for kindergarten through grade 12 by imposing a $50 tax on each real property parcel; exempts certain elderly and disabled homeowners. Funds must be used for class size reduction, textbooks, school safety, Academic Success facility grants, and a data system to evaluate educational program effectiveness

What is Mock Testing and Who Should Take the Tests?

Westview PTSA and Princeton Review are again offering Mock Exams for SAT, ACT, and PSAT.  These tests give students a chance to take tests, receive their scores, and learn valuable strategies to utilize before they take the real  SAT and ACT tests.

There will be 3 test dates held during the school year:  Nov. 11, Feb. 3, and March 31.

Nov. 11 is the first test and will only offer the mock SAT. It is highly recommended for sophomores and  juniors to take this test but certainly all students are welcome.

Feb. 3 will be offering both the mock SAT and mock ACT. Again, these tests are highly recommended for sophomores and juniors but all students may take the tests. If you want to take the mock SAT or mock ACT more than once in the same school year, Princeton Review says that each date will have a different test.

March 31 will offer 3 mock tests:  mock SAT, mock ACT, and mock PSAT. This is the date we highly recommend all freshmen and sophomores take the mock PSAT. Then, in their sophomore and junior year they will be ready to take both the mock SAT and ACT so they are ready in their junior year to take the real tests.

Each test date will have a separate registration.  The fee is $20 per test, in the form of a check made out to Westview PTSA please.  Currently we are only accepting registration for the Nov. 11 mock SAT test.

For additional questions, please email Cathy Carpenter at cathyann@san.rr.com or call her at 858-484-4300 or Magna Sundstrom at magnas@review.com or call at (858) 558-0500.
