PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Westview has completed its self-study for the WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation visit from October 9-11, 2006. The full text of the self-study report, including the Action Plan, is on display in the office and we welcome our community to come by to review it.

One of the most gratifying aspects of the self-study was the opportunity to reflect on the incredible progress Westview has made in the four years it has been open. I thought you might like to see just a portion of Westview 2006 Highlights:

In May of 2006, 843 students were enrolled in one or more AP courses. Many were enrolled in more than one AP course, and 1,309 exams were administered. Westview had an overall pass rate of 83%. The pass rate (scores of 3, 4 or 5) for all AP exams in the Arts division was 100%.

Westview has 11 National Merit Scholar Semifinalists for 2006. (There are a total of 23 Semifinalists in the Poway Unified School District.)

Westview graduated its second class of seniors in 2006, 88% of whom went on to college.
4 The graduating class of 2006 was awarded $6,450,813 in scholarships.
4 Westview graduates were accepted at all of the major military academies.
4 37 Westview seniors were accepted at UC Berkeley, and 20 are attending there this year. Westview students were also accepted at several Ivy League schools.

Westview’s California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) pass rate for last year’s sophomores was 96% math, 95% ELA.

Westview’s API increased by 11 points to 820, and Westview met all AYP targets.

Westview won 5 CIF titles, was runner-up for five other CIF titles, and won two Palomar League championships in girl’s basketball and softball.

The members of the Westview Dance Team were named 2006 National Champions.

Student Taylor Yi was the sole Southern California student competing for a spot on the National Chemistry Olympiad Team. He was also a semi-finalist in both 2005 and 2006 for the U.S. Physics Team.

The Westview Exercise and Nutrition Science (ENS) Department was named the 2005 High School Physical Education Program of the Year for the State of California. Paige Metz, the department leader, was named State Physical Education Teacher of the Year.

The Westview Nexus student newspaper swept the San Diego County Journalism Education Association write-off competition, winning Grand Sweepstakes. They won Fourth Place in Best of Show at the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association National Convention in 2006. The Westview Yearbook won first place at the San Diego County Fair.

The Westview Cheerleaders took 8th place at the United Spirit Association Nationals.

Westview was named one of San Diego Magazine’s Top Schools (July 2006).

Westview Fine Arts students excelled at the San Diego County Fair – Student Showcase (Grades 9 – Junior College), winning over 55% of the top awards for the entire county. (This is the second year that they have had such a successful showing.)

Westview had the largest PTSA in San Diego County, as it has since the school was opened in 2002.

Great things are happening at Westview and we will continue to strive for excellence.  We are so proud of our Wolverines!

Principal

Volunteer to be a Poll Worker on November 7

Here’s a fun way to contribute money to the Westview Grad Nite – and it won’t cost you a penny!

The Registrar of Voters office is looking for civic-minded people to work at the polls on Tuesday, November 7. You can earn between $75 and $165 for the day, depending on your job assignment and bilingual abilities.  About a month after the election you will receive a check for your services. You can then deposit that in your own bank account and write a donation check to Grad Nite. You will then have the satisfaction of knowing you did a good thing – and you can claim a tax deduction!

If you have friends that would like to work together, every effort will be made to accomplish that.  Just be sure we know the other names when you volunteer.

If you have any questions, please call Cathy Glaser at 858-694-3404.

Grad Nite Needs You!

The goal of Grad Nite is to provide a fun and safe environment for senior students to celebrate their accomplishments. This celebration is a gift from parents. In order to accomplish this, all parents are encouraged to participate.

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Westview Community,

Thank you to all who have joined PTSA and attended our first Association meeting prior to Back to School Night. The minutes of that meeting are posted on our website. Please read prior to our next Association meeting on February 13. We are now 1500+ strong!  It's never too late to become a member, and there are many rewarding ways to help our school by volunteering. Check out our website for a membership form and volunteer opportunities.

Once again, National PTA is sponsoring its Reflections program. This year's theme is "My Favorite Place," and the categories are Visual Arts, Photography, Musical Composition, Literature, and two new ones Dance Choreography and Film/Video Production.  Entry forms can be picked up in the office and are on our website. They are due October 20.

One of the services that PTSA offers each year is Mock SAT Testing. This is a great way for students to "practice" the SAT prior to actually taking it. Our first date for this service is November 11. See our website to sign up.

Our Grad Nite Committee is already working hard planning for the big event! Tickets are $70, but the price will increase on January 1, so we encourage you to purchase early! Again, see our PTSA website for a ticket order form.

Happy Fall, Y'all!
Carolyn Epple

PTSA REFLECTIONS ART COMPETITION

ENTRIES DUE OCT 20

The theme this year is “My Favorite Place.”  We are asking that you inform your students of this opportunity to create a piece of art in one of six categories:  Photography, Visual Arts, Literature or Music Composition and two new categories:  Film/Videography and Dance/Choreography.

Entries are due in the Westview Office by October 20, 2006.  Information and the Official Entry Forms and Rules are available in the Office or on the Westview PTSA website.

Westview NJROTC wins 1st PLACE

The existence of NJROTC within the Poway Unified School District is especially obvious on Thursdays at Westview when Cadets display their pride by wearing their uniform throughout the school day. Although many students recognize the presence of NJROTC, very few realize the purpose and activities of this unique program.

Throughout the year the instructors along with the Cadet leadership instruct a variety of lessons. Most commonly noticed is the uniform, however, other aspects of the class such as leadership, physical fitness, participation and knowledge of drill are equally important. Every week all of these skills are reviewed and improved, to prepare the Cadets for competitions and activities that require skill in each area.

A recent activity in which the Westview NJROTC participated was the Poway Days Parade - the first activity of the school year - and with 45 Cadets marching behind a very dignified Color Guard it went very well. To the disapproval of most Cadets, NJROTC had to follow the horses, which meant that although Cadets are supposed to “look straight ahead at all times,” the natural impulse of watching the ground to avoid “obstacles” was ever present.

Another challenge that faced the Company of Cadets was that the Westview Band was directly behind NJROTC. This meant that C/LCdr Alex Printy, the Company Commander, had to project his voice over the enormous (and wonderful) sound of the Westview Gold while calling cadence. So not only was it hard for him but the Cadets also had to concentrate (a difficult task for some) on hearing him over the band.

To march properly, there are many elements that must be taught, learned and understood. One concept is cadence (all marching “as one”.  This may seem simple, but for a new Cadet having to incorporate all other aspects of drill, it can sometimes seem overwhelming.

Even with the challenges, they won 1st Place in the Drill Team category. With less than three weeks of training, the freshman stayed in step while the sophomores, juniors and seniors contributed discipline and dignity, all of which impressed the crowd (and judges). It is rumored that some of the crowd noticed that even LtCol Theisen, the Naval Science Instructor was smiling.

Drill is but one aspect of this great program …watch this Newsletter.

PTA POSITIONS ON BALLOT MEASURES

By Linda Cialeo and Lorene Joosten
Palomar Council PTA Legislative Representatives

The California State PTA has voted to SUPPORT Propositions 1D and 86, and OPPOSE Proposition 88. These propositions will appear on the November 7th ballot:

SUPPORT 1D - Kindergarten-University Public Education Facilities Bond Act of 2006: This ten billion four hundred sixteen million dollar ($10,416,000,000) bond issue will provide needed funding to relieve public school overcrowding and to repair older schools. It will improve earthquake safety and fund vocational educational facilities in public schools.

SUPPORT 86 - Tobacco Tax Act of 2006: Imposes additional 13 cent tax on each cigarette distributed ($2.60 per pack), and indirectly increases tax on other tobacco products. Provides funding to qualified hospitals for emergency services, nursing education and health insurance to eligible children. Revenue also allocated to specified purposes including tobacco use prevention programs, enforcement of tobacco-related laws, and research, prevention and treatment of various conditions including cancers (breast, cervical, prostate and colorectal), heart disease, stroke, asthma and obesity.

OPPOSE 88 - Classroom Learning and Accountability Act: Provides additional public school funding for kindergarten through grade 12 by imposing a $50 tax on each real property parcel; exempts certain elderly and disabled homeowners. Funds must be used for class size reduction, textbooks, school safety, Academic Success facility grants, and a data system to evaluate educational program effectiveness.

Arguments for and against these and other statewide initiatives are contained in the Voter Information Guide which can be accessed on the Secretary of State’s website.

California’s non-partisan Legislative Analyst’s Office has prepared fiscal analyses of all the initiatives that have qualified for the statewide ballot: click here for more information.

National Merit Scholarship

National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. The corporation was established in 1955 to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program, an annual academic competition for recognition and scholarships that is open to all U.S. high school students who meet published entry requirements.  The Semifinalists named in each year’s Merit Scholarship competition show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The Merit Scholarship awards students may receive are supported by independent sponsor organizations and by NMSC’s own funds.

Semifinalists are designated on a state representational basis. The number of Semi-finalists named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of high school graduating seniors.

T
he 16,000 Semifinalists who have qualified to continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to be offered in 2007 were designated from some 1.3 million National Merit Program entrants. Students entered the competition by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which is used by NMSC as an initial screen of entrants. Representing less than 1 percent of each state’s high school seniors, semi-finalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state, and they are the only participants who have an opportunity to advance in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to be offered next spring 2007.

It is Westview ’s pleasure to announce the eleven students who have qualified to continue the competition from some 1.3 million National Merit Program entrants. Congratulations to:

Parents of the Senior Class of 2007

On behalf of the Westview Senior Class, we would like to ask for your help supporting this year’s homecoming float building. The Senior Class Council coordinates class activities and reaches out to students throughout the year, in order to make high school an even greater experience through student participation.

Float building week is very busy. Through creative ideas and teamwork, students will bind together to create an artistic float to showcase and compete at the homecoming game. The floats are judged on creativity, overall appearance, spirit, and teamwork.

Through your gracious donations, we will be able to purchase food to feed the students as well as build our fabulous float. The building will take place from 3:30 to 8:30 pm Monday October 2nd through Thursday, October 5th.

You can help by donating:
•  Gift cards( grocery stores, hardware
   stores, etc.)
•  Food (enough to serve 15 per night)-
•  Chaperoning (time slots will be made)
•  Building/artistic skills
•  Supplies of all sizes (wood, chicken
    wire, paint, nails, etc.)

Any of these would be greatly appreciated.

Please contact Anjalee Vasavani or Nicole Capo with any information and questions.  You may also contact our class Co-Advisors, Kellie Oydna and Dorothy Carlson. Remember that you are invited to join and view the created floats on the evening of October 6th at 7:00 pm at Westview Stadium. We hope to hear from you soon. Go Seniors!

What is Mock Testing and Who Should Take the Tests?

Westview PTSA and Princeton Review are again offering Mock Exams for SAT, ACT, and PSAT. These tests give students a chance to take tests, receive their scores, and learn valuable strategies to utilize before they take the real  SAT and ACT tests.

There will be 3 test dates held during the school year:  Nov. 11, Feb. 3, and March 31.

Nov. 11 is the first test and will only offer the mock SAT.  It is highly recommended for sophomores and  juniors to take this test but certainly all students are welcome.

Feb. 3 will be offering both the mock SAT and mock ACT.  Again, these tests are highly recommended for sophomores and juniors but all students may take the tests. If you want to take the mock SAT or mock ACT more than once in the same school year, Princeton Review says that each date will have a different test.

March 31 will offer 3 mock tests:  mock SAT, mock ACT, and mock PSAT. This is the date we highly recommend all freshmen and sophomores take the mock PSAT. Then, in their sophomore and junior year they will be ready to take both the mock SAT and ACT so they are ready in their junior year to take the real tests.

Each test date will have a separate registration. The fee is $20 per test, in the form of a check made out to Westview PTSA please. Currently we are only accepting registration for the Nov. 11 mock SAT test.

For additional questions, please email Cathy Carpenter at cathyann@san.rr.com or call her at 858-484-4300 or Magna Sundstrom at magnas@review.com or call at (858) 558-0500.

If you have a student who is interested in scholarship opportunities, please have them complete a Westview Scholarship Application and return to Miss Bloomfield in the Wolverine Center.  The forms are available in the Wolverine Center or on the counseling page of the website.  Students will be e-mailed information on scholarships in which they meet the minimum eligibility criteria.  In addition, they will receive other information via e-mail, such as internship opportunities, conferences, colleges coming to campus and more.
