Welcome Back!

 Principal's Message

Westview is off to a wonderful start this year, and we have so much to celebrate.

We just received the news that our API score jumped from 809 to 820, and Westview has 11 National Merit Scholarship finalists!

Our sophomores took the California High School Exit Exam in the Spring of 2006 and had a phenomenal pass rate of 96% in Mathematics and 95% in English/Language Arts!  Last year our students took almost 1,300 AP exams with an 83% pass rate! Also notable is the fact that 37 students from our most recent graduating class were accepted at UC Berkeley and 19 are entering as freshmen this month. Westview is also represented by 2006 graduates at each of the major military academies.

“No matter how much you have achieved, you will always be merely good relative to what you can become. Greatness is an inherently dynamic process, not an end point. The moment you think of yourself as great, your slide toward mediocrity will have already begun.”

 Jim Collins,
Good to Great and the Social Sectors
, 2005

We are not content to sit on our laurels. As many of you know, Westview has been conducting an intensive self-study for the past year in preparation for an October 2006 accreditation visit from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Last year, a group of 12 parent representatives solicited parent input via a town-hall meeting, a survey, the PTSA, and the Westview Foundation to identify strengths and growth areas. This feedback, along with information from student, teacher, and staff groups, was reported out to Focus Groups who then developed a comprehensive Action Plan for the next three years. A few examples of some of the ways we will keep getting better are listed below:

Counselors now have smaller caseloads and will be visiting their students in homeroom on a regular basis.

We are developing a number of intervention processes to address the academic and personal needs of students who need extra support.

We are working with our teachers and our district technology support people to improve the consistency of our communication to parents via Learning Point and Homeroom.

Westview will continue to build on its successes, and we are looking forward to another outstanding year.

On behalf of the Westview Administrative Staff, we would like to invite you to a “Meet Your Administrators” Coffee on September 5, 2006. We will meet in the Staff Lounge from 6:00pm to 7:00pm and we hope that you’ll be able to stop by to say hi.

I’d also like to remind you that our Back to School Night is on Tuesday, September 12, 2006. This will be a wonderful opportunity for you to meet your student’s teachers.

I look forward to meeting with you!

Dawn Kastner
Principal

Simplify Your Life!

Help raise funds for Grad Nite 2007 and make your life a little simpler at the same time!

Westview has teamed up with Dream Dinners in Poway to run an exciting fundraiser in October.

Dream Dinners provides everything you need to assemble delicious, nutritious dinners for your family. Gone are the hassles and headaches of planning and preparing meals. In their place are Dream Dinners' wonderful entrees that you assemble once and serve to your family in the weeks ahead. Choose your selection from a menu of meals voted all-time customer favorites. Then come to Dream Dinners to assemble your entrees. Everything you need is provided, from easy-to-follow instructions to easily measured, pre-cut ingredients. Best of all, there is no clean-up! Once you have assembled your dinners, they are ready for your refrigerator or freezer. Just thaw, cook and enjoy a delicious family meal.

To preview a current menu visit www.dreamdinners.com. Make plans to sign up for a session in October online or call Dream Dinners, Poway, at (858) 679-DREAM (3732). Sign up with a friend or neighbor and have a fun time.

Be sure to let Dream Dinners know that you are from Westview so that the school receives credit for your visit. For questions, please email Beth Byloff.

Volunteer to be a Poll Worker on November 7

Here’s a fun way to contribute money to the Westview Grad Nite – and it won’t cost you a penny!

The Registrar of Voters office is looking for civic-minded people to work at the polls on Tuesday, November 7. You can earn between $75 and $165 for the day, depending on your job assignment and bilingual abilities.  About a month after the election you will receive a check for your services.  You can then deposit that in your own bank account and write a donation check to Grad Nite. You will then have the satisfaction of knowing you did a good thing – and you can claim a tax deduction!

If you have friends that would like to work together, every effort will be made to accomplish that.  Just be sure we know the other names when you volunteer.

If you have any questions, please call Cathy Glaser at 858-694-3404.

PTSA President's Message

Dear Westview Parents and Students,

I am happy to announce that as of August 28 we have 1,466 PTSA members who signed up at the six days of registration and on the first day of school.  Thank you to all!

The money we raise from membership and our fundraisers is used to support our programs: Character Counts!, College Readiness, Community Concerns, Newsletters, National PTA's Reflections art program (our very own
Justin Scheid won a 2006 National Award for Music Composition!), Safety, Senior Scholarships, Staff Grants, Student/Staff Recognition and Wellness. We also award financial assistance to students in need and generously support Student Support Services.

If you have not joined, I ask you to do so. Benefits are: being a member of the largest volunteer organization in the United States, discounts at Office Depot and Barnes and Noble, and access to many valuable parent resources at
www.pta.org, to name a few!

We are looking forward to another successful year. Our first
Association meeting will be on Tuesday, September 12, at 5:45pm. That's just prior to our Westview Back-to-School Night, so plan on being there early to attend! As members, you have the privilege of voting on our 2006-2007 Goals, Programs, Budget, and Services. All of these are on our website, so please be informed about these before the meeting.

I would like to thank:
Colleen Salzetti for her wonderful coordination of Registration, and all of the volunteers that made things go so smoothly.
Kathy Govea, 2nd VP Membership, for getting so many of you to join!
Dora Gray, Hospitality Chair, and all of her volunteers for the incredible Back-to-School Breakfast for the teachers and staff! There were four different stations: Beverages, Continental, Fresh Eggs, Bacon and Sausage, and Waffles and Pancakes! As we told our teachers and staff, "Only the BEST for the BEST!" It was perfect except for constantly tripping the circuit breakers because of all the burners, waffle irons and griddles plugged in!

Please check our
website often. It is constantly updated with pertinent and useful information for all students and parents.

I am honored to serve as your PTSA President for the 2006-2007 year. Please let me know if there are any suggestions, questions or concerns that you have. My email is
WestviewPTSA3@san.rr.com

Did you list your student in Westview’s directory?

We’ve extended the deadline until Tuesday, September 12, so go online and enter your information as soon as possible – just remember to print out the form, sign it, and have your student drop it off in the office.

Thank you for using the new online form. This saves countless hours of data entry time, creates accurate listings, and provides for timely distribution of the directory.

To purchase a directory, fill out this form and return it to the school office. Remember to write your student’s name on the form. Directories are $5.00 each. You do not have to buy a directory to be listed. Directories will be distributed through homerooms as soon as they are available.

Questions? Contact Debbie Vogel.

“W” stickers, t-shirts, & schedule magnets

Welcome back to school! Thank you to those who have already shown support for our kick-off fundraisers for the year: "W" stickers,
t-shirts, and our new schedule magnets.

Our "W" stickers have a new look this year as they include our "Westview" name right under the "W".

The schedule magnets are extremely useful in keeping track of Westview's daily schedule variations. Click here to see a sample.

Westview t-shirts are a great way to show your school spirit. T-shirt samples can be seen here.

If you are interested in purchasing any of these items, please contact Liske McCormley. A big thank you goes out to Liske for all her work in coordinating the sales of these items.

This year we will also be repeating the popular Mock College Exam program. This program provides a useful service to our Westview students while helping to raise money for the PTSA. Click here for scheduled dates and additional information.

If you have questions or would like additional information about any of our PTSA fundraisers, please contact Sue Hasselmann, PTSA VP Ways & Means. Thank you again for your support!
