PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

It is such an exciting time at Westview as we prepare for graduation!  Seniors are smiling with anticipation about their coming adventures, and the rest of us are dealing with the mixed emotions that come with saying goodbye to the students we’ve so enjoyed.

We want this final four weeks to be a happy, joyous time for all.  Again, we always look to the importance of preparing students for the lifetime habits of excellence they will need in their college and career endeavors.  Please remind your students that they need to stay focused and “on their game” until the final day of school.  Parents, it’s a good idea to watch Learning Point closely at this time of year. This is especially important for seniors who sometimes start to relax a little bit prematurely.  Last year I attended the PUSD summer school graduation for the seniors who failed a class at the last minute and were unable to participate in the June ceremony.  While it was a lovely event, I know that the graduates and their families were deeply disappointed that they were unable to graduate with their friends at Westview.  It seems to happen every year, and my fervent wish is that this year, all members of the Class of 2007 pass their classes and join us on June 20!

This is my last “Principal’s Message” for the 2006-07 school year, and I want to close by thanking Westview’s parent community.  I am convinced that you are one of the main reasons that this is such a great school.  You are so supportive of our programs, our teachers, and especially our students, and your impact is seen everywhere.  I am in awe of the sacrifices of time and energy that I observe from parents every day, and on behalf of the entire Westview family I want to say again: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

On May 25, PTSA showed our teachers and staff how very much they are appreciated by having a luncheon to honor them for Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you, Dora Gray, our Hospitality Chair, and "hostess with the mostess" for coordinating this fabulous event and for cooking all the food! And a big thank you to all who helped set-up, serve and clean-up -- Beth Byloff, Jennifer Duffy, Debbie Govea, Christine O'Hara, Becky Palenske, Denise Ruiz and Cheryl White.  And a BIG THANK YOU to Bob Runge for his expertise as chef and to Samantha, Kristen and Taylor Runge, Dora's daughters, for their help with any and everything we needed!

Again, Student/Staff Recognition was a wonderful and moving event. Congratulations to all recipients - 101 students and 56 staff!  Thank you, Yvonne Weinstein, Chair of this event, and her committee, Gloria Lew and Margaret Lupfer.  Also thank you to the volunteers that helped that evening -- Nga Dang, Gloria Lew, Colleen Salzetti, Cindi Wade, and Andrew Schmedake for his help with sound and lighting.

And a thank you to Christine O'Hara, 5th Vice-President, Grad Nite-elect, for coordinating the Junior Parent Grad Nite 2008 Information meeting on May 30. Congratulations to the over 60 people who attended, volunteered for Grad Nite 2008, and took advantage of the one-time low ticket price of $50! Thank you, Cindy Kodama, Gloria Lew and Cindi Wade for your assistance.

It is hard to believe that my time at Westview and Poway Unified are about to come to an end!  Your PTSA will be in very capable hands with Sue Hasselmann at the helm, along with the newly elected officers and committee chairs.

I would like to thank everyone who has served on the Westview Board for the past two years for making my position as president a very easy one -- what a great group to work with! Also big thank yous to Dawn Kastner for her continuing support and involvement in PTSA, Sally Flournoy, Michael Dodson and Todd Cassen for filling in for Dawn when she was "double parked", to Todd Cassen for making all those motions, to Tina McDowell for "showing me the ropes," answering hundreds of questions, getting information to me in an instant and facilitating with whatever, Lois Mangarelli for ALL she does everyday for PTSA, and to Lois and Gloria Lew for helping get all our bulk mailings done by the rules!!! Westview is so very fortunate to have such dedicated, helpful administration and staff. I will miss you all.

Enjoy your summer!

WESTVIEW VARSITY BOYS’ LACROSSE SPRING TRIP
APRIL 12 THROUGH APRIL 17

Pictured from left:
Berrick Rastok, Brian Foersch, Andrew Wade

The school year is coming to a close and it’s time to give a brief overview of the boys’ varsity lacrosse team spring break trip of 2007.

This year the boys’ varsity lacrosse team ventured off to the East Coast visiting Maryland and Washington, D.C.

They played Warwick High School from Pennsylvania and won.

The guys got to enjoy touring Washington, D.C.’s monuments and lots and lots of walking. They enjoyed a college lacrosse game, the U.S. Lacrosse Museum, bowling, and a variety of great meals. The weather was rain every day due to the Nor'easter, which had not risen its head for about twenty years. Nonetheless, the schedule was filled with many outings and the team pursued them all.

The coaches and the dad chaperones did a great job in giving the team another wonderful lacrosse experience and we want to thank them all.

Thanks for the memories and good luck to the graduating seniors.

Westview Boys’ Lacrosse has nominated Jared Brett, Drew Ness, and Berrick Rastok to represent the Wolverines in the 2007 San Diego Chapter US Lacrosse All-Star Game being held on June 2. Additionally, Brendan McWalters, Scott Schrag, and Kevin Labelle have been listed as alternates. Congratulations to all the nominated players.

Go Wolverines!

REFLECTIONS IN SUMMER!

Thanks to the 138 Westview Reflections entrants for 2006-2007!  We had a fabulous turnout this year.

Now it is time to get ready for next year. The 2007-2008 theme is “I can make a difference
by…”

Reflections is a national PTSA program that provides an opportunity for students to showcase their talents in art, photography, literature, music, dance and film.

Each entry is judged for its originality, creativity and how the art reflects the theme.  Entries are due in October, but summer is an excellent time to get started on your project.

Many of our entries have gone on to win at County, State and National levels. And it looks great on a college application!  Be creative this summer.

You can make a difference…… by entering your original work of art in Reflections!

CRYSTAL APPLE AWARDS

In appreciation for area high school educators who have demonstrated true dedication to their profession, students and leaders from the community, schools and the local congregations of The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints joined to recognize eight teachers for the 3rd Annual Crystal Apple Awards on May 8, 2007.

Honored that evening with a Crystal Apple Award were Mr. Josh Cottrell and Mrs. Doreen McCarty from Westview. Presenting the awards – an engraved crystal apple - to the teachers were seniors Alison Stapley and Rob Platt. A student essay was written and presented about each teacher, expressing appreciation for their teaching excellence and the strong values they bring into their classroom.

The Crystal Apple Award is unique as the teachers were nominated and chosen by approximately 150 students in the area - students who attend an hour-long early morning religious class before high school each day.  NBC Channel 7’s Consumer Editor Bob Hansen emceed the ceremony. A group of area high school students provided special musical entertainment for the evening.

Other teachers that received awards were Scott Currie and Jodee Janda from Mt. Carmel High; Matthew Becker and Randall Poston from Scripps Ranch High; Jeanne Christensen and James Earnest from Mira Mesa High. Also in attendance that evening was Westview Principal Dawn Kastner and Area Administrator Sally Flournoy.

CLASS OF  2009

Our class is currently in the process of getting out class shirts. This is a great opportunity for sophomores to get more involved in class pride and activities with the purchase of a class shirt. These shirts will be useful in the next 3 years, as ’09 students will be able to wear their shirts to all class pride activities like pep rallies, and will be especially useful by the Senior year during Senior activities. These shirts will also be a small fundraiser for Prom 2008, which will be hosted by the Class of 2009 next year. They will be on sale for $13. All your student needs to do is to come to Room D-102 and fill out an order form. Please encourage your sophomore student to purchase a shirt, as it will prove to be useful in our next high school years.

Thank you,
Jacqueline Kim
Sophomore Co-President

CLASS OF  2010

We are currently working on many upcoming fundraisers. So far we have had an ice skating night on the night of June 1. If you have any new fundraising ideas, please let us know. We are also publicizing for more members to join class council. We need lots of new people and fresh ideas. Come to meetings on Tuesdays during lunch. Thank you.

If you have any questions feel free to contact us.

ENJOY YOUR SUMMER VACATION!

Westview's Seniors are moving on!

Congratulations to Westview's third graduating class! Many of our students have reported that they are planning on attending a 4-year college/university, community college or a specialty school such as a culinary academy, visual/performing arts school, or cosmetology school.  Others plan to pursue careers in the military or working after high school. We are proud of our students' accomplishments and their dedication to continuous learning. We wish them well as they begin the next phase of their lives.

Preparing for next year (what I plan to do on my summer vacation)

Many students and parents have been wondering what they should be doing over the summer to prepare for next year.
The Counseling Department would like to offer a few suggestions:

~ Work on building up your college resume through involvement in community service.

~ Begin (or continue) exploring different colleges or career opportunities. It is never too early to begin to see what options are available.

~ Maintain and improve skills in Math, Reading, and Writing.

~ Rest, Relax, and Have Fun!

Enrolling New Students

Counselors will be enrolling new students in June and August. New student enrollment will be by appointment only. This is only necessary for students who are new to the Poway Unified School District or have an approved Intra-District Transfer. To begin the process, new students must complete an enrollment packet to get started.
