PRINCIPAL'S
MESSAGE
Ordinarily
I would be using this column to share Westview news and
accomplishments, but this month I’d like to speak from a more
personal viewpoint. First of all, thank you to the many, many
students and parents who have offered housing, cards, and well
wishes to my family and me after our house burned. I have
received so many calls and emails that I haven’t been able to
return them all, but please know how much they meant to us. This entire event has been much less traumatic than I would have
anticipated thanks to all of the kindness and support. The
primary emotion I have felt this week has been a deep gratitude for
this community and all of the wonderful people who make up the
Wolverine Family.
I’d also like to offer my thanks to a number of extraordinary
people who have gone “above and beyond” this week. First
of all, our custodians, campus security, food services and area
administrators worked tirelessly to set up Westview as an evacuation
center on Monday, October 22. Albertsons donated food, water
and diapers, and It’s a Grind brought coffee. During the
following week and throughout the weekend, our custodians worked
long hours to work a miracle in ensuring a safe and immaculate
campus for our students and staff when we returned on Monday. Dora Gray and her wonderful daughters hate when I recognize them,
but their gift of comfort food for our staff meeting and first day
back cheered everyone up.
I do want to share some good news about our students. We have
learned that Westview had 34 AP National Scholars based on last
year’s exams, which is a higher total than that of 17 states! AP National Scholar status is granted to students in the
United States
who receive an average grade of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken,
and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. We had 28
AP National Scholars in the previous year, so the number continues
to climb. Go Wolverines!

ADOPT
A FAMILY
Westview
ASB and Westview PTSA are combining forces to support the Palomar
Council PTA’s
Adopt
a Family Program for this holiday season.
This program assists local PUSD families in need with new
clothing, gifts and gift cards. We will also be adding
some fire victims to the anonymous list.
Westview has
made this a holiday tradition for the past 3 years! This year
the homerooms that participate will share one family for every two
homerooms. This should make the project easier than before, and it
will still provide our community families in need with some
wonderful assistance that is truly appreciated.
Please ask
your homeroom teacher about the wish lists if you haven’t seen
them by November 14th. All items should be returned to the
homeroom teacher unwrapped. The deadline for collection is
December 3rd.
If you have any questions you can contact Becky
Palenske or Jenny Cole - Westview PTSA, Community Concerns.

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
As
I sit down to write this, I am overcome by a multitude of emotions. Relief that many of those close to me who were in harm’s way are
safe today with their homes intact. Touched by what my
children chose to pack up with their belongings when we were asked
to evacuate our home. Saddened by the little things -- the
cancelled college fair, the forfeited athletic competitions, the
cancelled band tournament – knowing that those who worked so long
and hard won’t see the results of their tremendous efforts come to
fruition. Grief-stricken at the incomprehensible loss that
friends and community members are dealing with in the wake of this
terrible disaster. Enormous respect for our outstanding heroes
– the firefighters who have exerted superhuman efforts to save
lives and property – as well as for the less noticed heroes
laboring behind the scenes, from our custodial staff that faced the
immense task of cleaning up Westview’s campus to ensure a safe and
healthy environment for our students’ return, to food services
personnel that worked around the clock to feed those at the Poway
High and Westview evacuation centers. And pride. Although it
often seems in the frenetic activity of our day-to-day lives we move
around in our own little bubbles, it is inspiring to be part of a
community that is so quick to reach out to others in times of need
and rallies together to lift up one another.
Our PTSA is working closely with Palomar Council PTA to determine
the needs as quickly as possible of those affected by this
disaster. Thank you to those of you who have already responded
with offers of help and support. We will continue to
communicate the services and donations most needed.
This is
not an easy time – yet it is a time I am most proud of what we as
volunteers can accomplish for others. My best goes out to you
and your families as we work through these challenging times.

PTSA
OCTOBER RECAP
The
PTSA was hard at work during the month of October to implement various
programs and services. Here’s a summary of some of the things
accomplished:
Club Rush – PTSA manned a table both days of Club Rush to publicize
student involvement opportunities and encourage students to
participate. Thank you to Jennifer Duffy for coordinating
and to Diana Buell and Kris Shetter for manning the table.
API Scores Celebration – PTSA worked with the Administration and ASB
to help put together a lunchtime celebration for the students for
increased scores on last spring’s API testing. Thank you to
Dora Gray for procuring the treats, funded by PTSA, and coordinating
the volunteers, as well as to all parents who stopped in to help that
day.
Character Counts!/Red Ribbon Week – Thanks goes to Lynn Langley for
her work with Student Services and ASB to put together activities to promote
this week honoring a healthy lifestyle and exemplary character. PTSA also provided financial support to Student
Services and ASB for the purchase of supplies.
Dream Dinners Grad Nite fundraiser – This was our first fundraiser
of the year for Grad Nite. Thanks to Jill Roland and Jan Biundo
for coordinating.
Reflections
- All student entries were due October 19th. Our awards ceremony
is scheduled for Tuesday, November 6th. Thanks go out to Sabine
Schroeder for all her hard work on this program.

THE
GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT!
Every
year during the month of November, the American Cancer Society
sponsors the Great American Smokeout
by challenging smokers to stop using tobacco and bring awareness to
the many ways to kick the habit of cigarette smoking.
The Great American Smokeout directs the public’s attention to the
deaths and diseases caused by smoking. Everyday approximately 8.6
million people live with serious illnesses caused by smoking. The Smokeout also helps change the public’s awareness of second-hand
smoke effects, the new smoke-free laws, and discouraging teen
cigarette use.
Westview Student Support Services will be participating in spreading awareness of the
Great American Smokeout on Wednesday, November 14 at
lunch with information on tobacco facts.

ASB
FLOAT
BUILDING
PARENTS
Thank you for
all your help during homecoming week. Your hard work and dedication
helped make this year's homecoming week a success. All the stunning
floats were displayed at the homecoming half-time show where the
Junior class of 2009 took 1st place. We hope that you will come and
help at next year's float building week.
Thanks for all your help!

PTSA
RUSHES FOR STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
If
you have never witnessed Club Rush you have missed out. Students, food, every club imaginable, food, did I say students? If there was ever a chance for students to get involved in Westview
campus activities this is it.
So this year PTSA participated in Club
Rush to entice students to join PTSA with the chance to win iTUNE gift
cards and the promise of community service opportunities.
Congratulations to Robin Kotow and Linda Poon, our iTune gift card
winners!

MOCK
TESTING
PTSA
will again be offering the MOCK SAT, ACT, and PSAT tests this school
year. Taking a mock test is a valuable exercise that can help
to increase a student’s performance on the actual SAT or ACT test.
The first test will be the MOCK SAT on November 10 from 9am–1pm. This will include a complete mock SAT test
including the essay. All sections of the test will then be
graded by Revolution Prep. Individualized feedback will be
provided ONLINE, including personalized comments on the essay
and a detailed score report. This is the first time we have
been able to provide this information online!!!
In addition,
the follow-up/scoreback session will be immediately following the
test instead of in the evening a week later as we did in past years. This way students and parents can take the test and learn the
differences between all the tests, as well as review the most
commonly missed questions all on the same day.
Look for Registration for this test on the
PTSA mock testing website.
Don’t worry, there is room for all students and we take
registration up to November 8th.
Additional tests this year will be held on Feb. 9 for both the MOCK
SAT and ACT, and our final test will be March 29 for the MOCK SAT,
ACT and also the MOCK PSAT.

We
hope your students are doing well and the grades posted to their
transcript reflect their time and attention to their studies. If your students are struggling in any of their classes, we suggest
the following proactive interventions:
1. Check learning point to see the progress your student is
making.
2. Contact the teacher for suggestions that will help your student
be more effective.
3. Ask your student to use one of the many tutoring options:
a.
Tuesday and Thursday Wolverine Time with the teacher
b. Peer tutors (student can arrange with their counselor)
c. APES after school tutoring – Monday through Thursday, Mrs.
Vanderby’s room
4. Contact your student’s counselor.
How

CAHSEE
Testing for Juniors and Seniors
The
State of
California
requires all students to pass both portions of the California High
School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) in order to earn a high school diploma. In addition, all PUSD students must meet the high school graduation
requirements, which include passing the CAHSEE, in order to
participate in graduation ceremonies.
Westview will be
administering the CAHSEE in November for juniors and seniors (dates to
be announced).
For all other students, the CAHSEE will be administered during Term 2.
Family
Connection
If
your family is not signed up for a Family Connection account, it is
still not too late to do so. Family Connection is an
Internet-based communication tool between the counseling department
and families. It allows students and parents access to important
data for past Westview graduates, college/career planning and much
more. If you are interested in establishing account, please send
Kathy Bloomfield an e-mail at kbloomfield@powayusd.com. In the body of your message, please include the following:
1.
Your student’s name and e-mail address (the student ID number would
also be helpful).
2. Your name and e-mail address.
E-mail address must be unique, unless you have only one for the entire
family and do not have another child that will be accessing Family
Connection in the future. If students do not have an e-mail
address, please note that in the message and an online account will be
created for him or her.
