PRINCIPAL'S
MESSAGE
It’s
always fun to share good news, and Westview students continue to
make us proud! As you undoubtedly read last month, our API
score increased another 8 points to 836, which means that Westview
now ranks as one of the top five non-charter high schools in San
Diego County. Our students also collectively improved their
overall average scores on every subsection of the SAT I exams last
year. It is particularly impressive that so many of our
students have been willing to challenge themselves by taking
advanced coursework. This year an astonishing 60% of our 10th
-12th graders are taking at least one Advanced Placement (AP)
course!
The success of our students is due to many factors, not the least of
which is the home/school partnership that is so evident at Westview. Parent volunteers are “critical to the mission” and they are
supported by two groups of incredible folks: our Foundation and our PTSA. In addition to raising money for the school, the board
members of the Westview Foundation put in long hours to ensure that
all of our booster organizations have the protection of insurance
and financial management support. Our PTSA provides
services and sponsors myriad programs for students, families, and
teachers. Both of these groups, along with the many
booster programs, do so much for this school. We so appreciate
our parents!!!
I’d like to wrap up this October message with a quick note of
caution to our seniors and their parents. You are already
beginning to receive advertisements about graduation trips to Mexico, companies that offer to find you scholarships (for a fee), and who
knows what else. Please be aware that none of these programs
or companies is affiliated with Westview and we do not endorse them. If you have any questions about these companies, I recommend that
you contact Kathy Bloomfield using your Family Connection account. And if you haven’t set up your account yet, you can email her at kbloomfield@powayusd.com. This is a wonderful program to help your student
transition from high school to the world of college and career.

PUSD COLLEGE
FAIR
Sponsored by
PUSD & Palomar Council PTA
Poway
Unified
School District
is sponsoring its first district wide College Fair in over ten years on
Tuesday, October 23rd at
Mt.
Carmel
High School. This is a great opportunity for the students and parents of
Westview.
How is the College Fair different than the College Visits to my high
school that we have scheduled throughout the year? This is an
opportunity to talk with College Reps from many colleges all on the same
evening. Typically at the school visits, students can only hear from
one college representative at a time. These usually occur during
lunchtime and sometimes during class time.
What is the schedule for the PUSD College Fair? It will
take place on Tuesday, October 23rd from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Workshops will take place from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. From 6:30pm to
8:30pm, students and parents will be able to meet with the College
Representatives from over 80 colleges will be present.
What is the location of the College Fair? It will take place in
the Mt. Carmel High School Gymnasium. The workshops will take
place in the classrooms near the gym.
What workshops are being planned? Currently four workshops are
planned for the time period between 5:30pm and 6:30pm. There will
be a workshop on Community Colleges and the pathway to 4 year colleges,
Financial Aid, Highly Selective Schools and WUE (Western Undergraduate
Exchange) – which allows students in California to attend certain
colleges in other Western states for a little more than in state
tuition. We are also working on getting a speaker for an NCAA
Clearinghouse Athletic Rules Workshop.
If I am a senior in High School and will be completing my college
applications in the fall, won’t this College Fair be too late to help
me? This Fair is an excellent opportunity for High school
seniors to narrow down their list of colleges that they will apply to.
Talking with the college representatives may answer questions that
seniors have and help to pinpoint the colleges to which they will apply.
How will this College Fair be pertinent to 9th graders who really don’t
have any idea what college they would like to attend? This Fair will be a good start for 9th graders and their parents to see
the various types of colleges and opportunities there are. You
won’t leave this Fair knowing exactly what college you wish to attend
(that is a much longer and complex process), but it will give you some
options and expose you to some colleges you aren’t familiar with.
What if a 4-year college isn’t for me? Representatives from
community colleges, technical and vocational schools will also be
attending. Palomar College, Marymount College, National
Polytechnic College, California School of Culinary Arts, ITT Technical
Institute SD, and Les Roches Swiss Hotel School of Hotel Management are
sending representatives to our College Fair.
What is the best way to visit a College Fair? Review the list
of colleges that will be attending the Fair (the list is on the PUSD
website). Choose the colleges you want to find out about the most. If you have time, research the schools before attending the Fair. Write up a short list of questions to ask the college reps. If you
are attending the Fair with a family member, talk about a plan ahead of
time. Will you be splitting up so you can visit more college reps or
staying together to talk to the reps (parents may ask different
questions than students do).
Are these College Reps really College Admissions personnel? Some of the schools are sending personnel from their Admissions Office
while other schools are sending Alumni representatives. Alumni
reps receive training from their college, before representing their alma
mater at College Fairs.

Fair Coordinator, Colleen Salzetti, at pusdcollegefair@san.rr.com

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Message
on yesterday’s page-a-day calendar: “Tomorrow is often the
busiest day of the week.” Do you ever feel that way? I
think for many of us that pretty much describes the month of
September. We breathe a sigh of relief as we get through one
day only to find the next is even crazier! Getting into the
groove of the new school year can be a challenge, especially as we
try to factor in all the sports practices, parent meetings,
back-to-school nights, and whatever other things demand space on our
calendars. The good news is that we’re all in this together
and more importantly, we’re all in it for our kids.
September was a great month at Westview. A huge thanks goes
out to all of you who have signed up to become PTSA members and who
supported the sale of our “W” stickers, schedule magnets, and
Westview t-shirts. Thanks, too, to all who jumped in to
volunteer for one thing or another to ensure that the school year
got off to a smooth start.
As we look forward to October, here are a few suggestions to make
the month a great one:
Express your creativity – Encourage your students to get that
right
side of the brain busy and work on an entry for Reflections! Our wonderful Reflections chair, Sabine Schroeder, is available to
provide guidance and information.
Simplify your life – Make dinner time a snap by signing up to
create some delicious dinners at Dream Dinners in
Poway
. Everything you need is provided, and best of all there is no
clean-up! For each person who signs up from Westview, $10 will be
donated by Dream Dinners to the Westview Grad Nite fund.
Be thrifty – Attend the Foundation Rummage Sale at the end of the
month and find some amazing deals while supporting multiple
organizations on campus.
Say “YES” to healthy living and good character – help us
celebrate Red Ribbon Week and Character Counts! week by showing our
teens how to make healthy choices and modeling outstanding
character.
Explore the future – With your students, plan to attend the PUSD
College Fair being held at
Mt.
Carmel
High School
on Tuesday, October 23rd beginning at
5:30pm
Over 80 colleges have signed up to participate, with more joining
every day.
And finally … at least try
to plan a day that ISN’T busier than yesterday. Good luck
– and happy October!

other high school bands compete at our 4th annual tournament of the
bands at Wolverine Stadium. The event takes place on October 6th,
beginning at 5:30pm and tickets are $8 at the gate. Several booths and
fun things are planned in addition to some great music and
pageantry. Check the website for more info at www.westviewgold.org

PTSA
SEPTEMBER RECAP
The
PTSA was hard at work during the month of September getting
things rolling for the new school year. Here’s
a
summary of some
of the things accomplished:
Community Concerns
– Palomar Council organized a
back-to-school supply drive for families in need in our district.
Thank you to Becky Palenske,
Community Concerns Chair, for coordinating this for our site.
Newsletters
– This is our second issue of The
View for this school year, and you can look forward to staying
on top of what’s happening with information-packed monthly issues,
thanks to our exceptional newsletter editor Crystal
Ranj. In addition, the PTSA has published the first of several
staff newsletters to facilitate communications between our community
and staff members. Many thanks to Patsy
Romero for her work on this.
Westview Logo Items – It’s not too late to purchase your
“W” stickers or learning schedule magnets. And as the weather
gets cooler, you might want to consider showing your school spirit
in a long-sleeved Westview t-shirt. Check the PTSA website for more
information. And thank you, Sharon
Gruber, Logo Items Chair, for your dedication in making these
available at back-to-school night and our home football games.
Grad Nite
– Plans are already underway for Grad Nite 2008. We
have a strong committee of dedicated and enthusiastic parents, led
by our fantastic Grad Nite Chair Christine
O’Hara. There is still need for many more volunteers. Don’t
miss out on this amazing opportunity to create an incredible memory
for our graduating seniors.
Thank you also, to PTSA board members who work diligently behind the
scenes to keep our organization and non-profit status “legit”,
especially: Aida Shadfan, Auditor,
for completing the most recent audit of PTSA and Grad Nite financial
records, and Elizabeth Estes,
Parliamentarian, for her work on the bylaws. Finally, endless thanks
goes to our tireless webmaster, Margaret
Lupfer, for her superhero attention to detail and timeliness in
getting information updated for our Westview community.

RED RIBBON WEEK
CHARACTER COUNTS
Each
fall a specific week is chosen in October to celebrate Red Ribbon
Week. Westview will be acknowledging Red Ribbon week during
the week of October 22-26 as well as implementing character-building
ideas during the school day. Red Ribbon week is an opportunity
for schools and communities to educate people about the effects of
drugs and the advantages of leading a healthy lifestyle. Through various activities, educational lessons and the display of
red ribbons we stress the positive promotion of a drug-free life.
Red Ribbon week was originated as a dedication to a DEA Agent named
Enrique Camarena (Kiki). He was murdered by drug
traffickers in Mexico. What turned out to be a one-day event to honor him became
proclaimed by Congress in 1988 as Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon
week is in its 22nd year of celebration and hope.
During this week Student Support Services, Peer Counselors, PTSA and
ASB will be sponsoring a variety of fun activities for students. Look for tables at lunch and notices in the bulletin.

best place to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm.” --Swedish Proverb

WESTVIEW
PTSA STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
(or why we have an “S” in PTSA)
The
“S” stands for students and we need them in our PTSA! Students
play a valuable role in PTSA activities and offer significant
insight into issues facing teens in our community. Westview PTSA has enrolled over 500 students as members -- almost 1/3 of our
entire membership and about ¼ of our student body! We are
actively seeking Westview students who would like to participate in
our many committees, including Community Concerns, Character
Counts!, Staff Grants, Reflections and Legislation. Westview
students will benefit from the leadership, scholarship, and
community service opportunities
available through PTSA. Visit the Westview PTSA Volunteers
webpage or email Jennifer Duffy at jenduffy@san.rr.com
for more information on how students can be involved in PTSA! PTSA
wants YOU!

MOCK
TESTING
PTSA
will again be offering the MOCK SAT, ACT, and PSAT tests this school
year. Taking a mock test is a valuable exercise that can help
to increase a student’s performance on the actual SAT or ACT test. The first test will be the MOCK SAT on November
10 from
9am–1pm. This will include a complete mock SAT test including the
essay. All sections of the test will then be graded by
Revolution Prep. Individualized feedback will be provided ONLINE,
including personalized comments on the essay and a detailed score
report. This is the first time we have been able to provide
this information online!!! In addition, the follow-up/scoreback session will be immediately following the test instead of
in the evening a week later as we did in past years. This way
students and parents can take the test and learn the differences
between all the tests, as well as review the most commonly missed
questions all on the same day.
Look for Registration for this test on the
PTSA mock testing website.
Don’t worry, there is room for all students and we take
registration up to November 8th.
Additional tests this year will be held on Feb. 9 for both the MOCK
SAT and ACT, and our final test will be March 29 for the MOCK SAT,
ACT and also the MOCK PSAT.
