Attention
all senior parents and students!
The Senior Picnic and Breakfast are
fast approaching. The Senior Breakfast will be Tuesday, June 10th
from 9:00-11:30 a.m. in front of the theatre. At breakfast the
students will sign yearbooks and make their senior tiles with their
friends. The Senior Picnic will be held
on Wednesday, June 11th at Hilltop Park. Students are welcome to
bring lawn chairs, footballs, volleyball nets, etc. This will also
be a great opportunity for students to sign yearbooks. If
parents are interested in volunteering to serve food at either event
please contact Hulya Poyrazoglu, Senior Class President at hulyapoy@yahoo.com. June 12 is Graduation Day! Commencement begins at 3:00 p.m. Graduation tickets will be passed out at the Senior Breakfast.
Thank you to all parents who have helped make these past four years
memorable for the graduating class of 2008.
The junior class hosted an amazing prom night and is currently working hard on class shirts and the senior package for next year! Congratulations to Corbin Santos and Ellre Anchta, the new junior class presidents!
The school year is
coming to an end and the sophomore class held one final fundraiser at
Fuddruckers on May 29th. Most of the funds
will be used towards next year’s prom.
Class t-shirts are also in. Email
westviewclassof2010@yahoo.com to
purchase or come to the next sophomore class meeting if you previously
ordered one. Congratulations to our new presidents, James Vipatapat and Michelle Nquyen.
Calling all freshmen! If you are interested in becoming a sophomore executive class council officer, pick up an application in room G-116. The following positions are available: Homecoming/Float building Commissioner, Air bands Choreographer, Spirit, Fundraising Commissioner, Winter Formal Commissioner, Treasurer and Secretary.

teachers in a BELLY FLOP contest to kick off summer. Kevin Robinson, Jaren Wolsey, Bruce Steel, Stephanie King, Yechan Hong,
and Reed Cochran are the current contestants.
Embark
to Adventure: That is the theme for this year’s Grad Nite, and a fitting
theme for my household at the moment. With one graduating from high
school, one facing the challenges and excitement of her senior year, and
one leaving her elementary years behind her for good we seem to be running
the gamut of emotions.
It has been a lightening-quick, sometimes dramatic, and often inspiring
school year. From the devastating fires to the threat of severe
educational budget cuts, I have seen our community rise up and
rally. Our students have made us proud, and I am continually
impressed by the incredible passion and energy of our staff and parent
community that makes Westview the kind of place that it is.
In our PTSA corner of the world, we have accomplished much: the largest
membership in San Diego and Imperial Counties; an award-winning directory;
increased student involvement; allocation of staff grant, student
scholarship, and financial aid monies; a celebration of the arts through
the Reflections program; and educational advocacy. And of course, the
crowning achievement – Grad Nite, an exceptional labor of love by
Westview volunteers to ensure a safe and memorable celebration for all our
graduating seniors.
Embark to adventure. Here’s wishing all our graduating seniors the best
of luck as they move on to the next phase of their lives, and I look
forward to collaborating with many of you for more adventures and
continued success in the next school year. Have a wonderful summer!

The
PTSA was hard at work during these final weeks of the school year on
activities in support of our goals and objectives approved at the
beginning of the school year. Here’s a summary of some of the
things accomplished:
Staff Appreciation Luncheon – PTSA Hospitality Chair extraordinaire Dora
Gray transformed the staff lounge into a Mexican restaurant on Cinco de
Mayo and treated our staff to a fabulous luncheon in celebration of staff
appreciation week. Many thanks to Dora and her “catering crew”
for making our staff feel so loved and appreciated.
Senior Scholarships – Four seniors were awarded with PTSA-sponsored
scholarships in the amount of $750 each in support of our college
readiness goals. A big thank you goes out to Debbie Govea,
Scholarships Committee Chair, and committee members who put much time and
thought into selecting the recipients.
Grad Nite – It’s almost here! This is sure to be an evening to
remember for all our graduating seniors. Words cannot describe how much we
appreciate the time and incredible commitment put in by Grad Nite Chair
Christine O’Hara to make this event a success. Christine, you are
the bomb! Thank you, too, to the amazing group of dedicated parents
working week after week on all the details, big and small.
And of course there are all the other things going on behind the scenes
… the newsletter (thank you Crystal Ranj), annual PTSA report (thank
you, Denise Ruiz), volunteer coordination (thank you, Kris Shetter),
student services support (thank you, Allison Acquino-Arcio), the website
(Margaret Lupfer).
Please keep in mind that there are many opportunities to serve on next
year’s board – no experience necessary! For more information,

or 858-538-2652.
Our
own Westview GOLD Wind Ensemble has been officially invited to perform in
the New York Wind Band Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City in April
2009!
On May 22nd, they performed their kick-off fundraising concert
at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club in anticipation of next year's
trip. The beautiful setting complemented the ensemble’s
performance wonderfully. The Wind Ensemble played some excellent and
complicated pieces to show why they were one of only six high schools in
the country bestowed with this honor.
You can catch their next performances on
June 5-7 where they will be
performing fun songs everyone knows at a "Night at the Movies". This performance will be held in the Westview Theatre at 7pm on the 5th
and 6th with a matinee on the 7th at 12:30pm. Tickets will be $7 for
adults and $5 for students. Hope to see you at the movies! For
tickets contact bellechu99@yahoo.com.
The
Westview PTSA is excited to announce this year’s winners of the 2008
Senior Scholarship competition.
The winners are Allison Finn, Amanda
Hawthorne, Sundipta Rao, and Victoria Wang.
The Scholarship
Committee enjoyed reading student essays on the impact that Westview has
had on them as well as the impact they have had on Westview. This
year presented the most entries to date with a total of 48 students
participating. While all the essays were thoughtful we were only
able to award four students. These students will be receiving a
check in the amount of $750 each to help out with school costs when they
start college in the fall.
We want to thank all the students that
participated. Another big thank you to the committee members, Diana
Buell, Karen Eto, Denise Ruiz, Kris Shetter and Debbie Govea (Chair).
Various
athletic camps are held at Westview over the summer. Check the website
(athletics section) for more information. Many of the
camps still have space available, but don't wait too long or you may miss
out!

The
Navy JROTC Cadets are winding down another award winning year! During the Unit's Award Ceremony on Friday, May 16th, the Unit Commanding
Officer, Cadet Lieutenant Commander Ashley Washington, was presented the
Distinguished Unit Banner by the Navy JROTC Area ELEVEN Manager, CDR Ken
Liles, USN. Only 11 units out of Area ELEVEN's 59 units earned this
distinction.
The cadets never let up the entire year but did manage some
good "liberty" during a trip to Six Flags Magic Mountain on
Saturday, May 10th.
Nearly 80 cadets are registered for next year
which will be the most since Westview opened. Navy JROTC is a leadership
and citizenship class designed to develop the nation's future leaders.

HAVE A
GREAT
SUMMER
VACATION!

Congratulations to Westview's fourth graduating class! Many of our students have reported that they are planning on attending a 4-year college/university, community college or a specialty school such as a culinary academy, visual/performing arts school, or cosmetology school. Others plan to pursue careers in the military or working after high school. We are proud of our students' accomplishments and their dedication to continuous learning. We wish them well as they begin the next phase of their lives.
Many students and parents have been wondering what they should be doing over the summer to prepare for next year. The Counseling Department would like to offer a few suggestions:
Work on building up your college resume through involvement in community service.
Begin (or continue) exploring different colleges or career opportunities. It is never too early to begin to see what options are available.
Maintain and improve skills in Math, Reading, and Writing.
Rest, Relax, and Have Fun!
Counselors
will be enrolling new students in June and August. New student
enrollment will be by appointment only. This is only necessary for
students who are new to the Poway Unified School District or have an
approved Intra-District Transfer. To begin the process, new students must
complete an enrollment packet to get started. However, families
should be aware that registration is required for every student. Registration dates are available on Westview’s homepage at www.westviewwolverines.com.
The list for summer school is generally made available to Westview the last day or two of the school year. Please check the Wolverine Center and/or the website periodically for updates.
