PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Congratulations to Westview’s students and teachers for achieving a California Academic Performance Indicator (API) score of 843, maintaining our status as one of the premier high schools in the state! This is particularly commendable in light of the challenges that our students and staff overcame last year. They experienced evacuation from their homes due to wildfires, followed by a week of lost instruction, and finally the emotional disruption caused by half of the teachers receiving lay-off notices due to the state budget crisis. Despite these events, our students and teachers kept their focus on learning and giving their best effort. I am so proud to work with the Westview Wolverines!

By now, most of you have noticed that our enrollment has continued to increase, especially if you have been in our parking lot at around 3:10pm. Westview now has 2,408 students and 628 of them are freshmen. This means that we have a lot of parents picking up their students at the same time that pedestrians and inexperienced teenage drivers are exiting. We have instituted a few changes in our processes for clearing the parking lot in order to improve safety. The Westview parking lots have 3 exits. The center exit is designated for buses and pedestrians. The outside exits are provided for exiting cars. This system allows us to safely clear the parking lot in fifteen minutes. (Hint: So far this year, the student parking lot has fewer cars and currently empties out more quickly than the main lot.) Thank you for your patience and for being good role models of courteous driving for our students.

Finally, PUSD transcripts do not include class rank. If you need this information in support of your student’s college and scholarship needs, you may request class ranking to be indicated on transcripts and letters of recommendation. Please follow this brief process:

When filling out the “Transcript Request Form,” available either at the Registrar’s office or on the Westview website, please note in the section marked “Special Handling/Action Required” that you are requesting that class rank be added to the transcript. This must be done on each request form as the information will not continually stay on the transcript.

Please remember that transcript requests will not be processed immediately, so plan accordingly and allow 4 school days for processing.

YEARBOOK DEDICATIONS

Westview offers senior parents the chance to salute their student’s high school achievements by buying a dedication in the yearbook. A dedication is the perfect chance to remember your student’s high school journey in both words and pictures.

If you are interested in running a dedication, there is still time to submit one.

We offer two types of dedications:

8½ x 11 (Full Page w/color) …………$400
A full page dedication is 8.1667 inches in width and 10.1445 inches in height.

8½ x 11 (Half Page w/color)…………$250
A half page dedication is 8.1667 inches in width and 4.5324 inches in height.

For a full page dedication:

Option A - You create the entire dedication yourself and send it to us as a PDF file or a jpeg file. Please make sure that the resolution is at least 300.

Option B - We create the dedication for you. If we do this, we ask that you provide us with 8-12 photos and the text of your dedication in no more than 100 words. The photos may be hard copies or digital. For digital photos, please make sure that their resolution is at least 300.

For a half page dedication:

We create the dedication for you. To do this we need 4-5 photos and no more than 50 words. The photos can be digital or hard copies. If the photos are digital, please make sure that the resolution is at least 300.

All photographs submitted with the dedications will be returned before the end of the school year.

To ensure that your dedication makes it into the 2008-2009 yearbook, please send your photos and text along with a check made out to Westview Yearbook to Westview by October 15, 2008. Dedications may also be dropped off with Mr. Wenger in Room L-104.

All photos and copy must be tasteful and not violate school rules or laws. The Westview yearbook staff reserves the right to withhold any photos or copy from publication.

Thank you again for your interest in a dedication for your graduating senior.

NAVY JROTC

Navy JROTC is a citizen development program with no military obligation. The program is designed to instill self-discipline, team work, respect for authority, responsibility of citizenship in a free society, and leadership. Army General Colin Powell is a product of JROTC while growing up in the New York City public school system. Parents of new cadets continually tell me that their students now have more confidence, have more pride in their appearance and are more respectful - which is what I like to hear!

NJROTC has many extra-curriculum activities and opportunities to perform on many different teams, including color guards, armed and unarmed drill exhibitions, athletics and marksmanship. Above is a photo of NJROTC Platoons during a monthly "Quarters" where cadets are promoted and receive various awards.

PUSD COLLEGE FAIR

PUSD and Palomar Council PTA is sponsoring a district-wide college fair on Wednesday, October 22. This will be the first district-wide college fair for PUSD in over ten years. The site of the college fair is Westview High School.

Workshops will begin at 4:30pm, with a second session starting at 5:30pm. Some of the topics of the workshops include “how to select a college”, “private vs. public colleges”, “community colleges”, “art schools” and “going to school out of state”. Be sure to visit the college fair website at www.pusdcollegefair.org for the complete listing and times.

Beginning at 5:30pm, students and parents will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from over 110 schools. Technical schools, art schools, community colleges and 4-year colleges and universities from throughout the country have committed to participating. See the website for a complete listing of participating colleges and schools. The college fair will conclude at 8:30pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity for all PUSD high school and middle school students and their parents to find out more about college opportunities. Be sure to mark this date on your calendar.

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Leave it to the perennial optimist Woody Allen to sum things up: "More than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly." These days, with the evening news sending out a seemingly endless stream of things to worry about, it’s hard not to adopt Mr. Allen’s tongue-in-cheek point of view. And so I propose that to counteract, we look for reasons to celebrate. Here are some I came up with:

  • Westview once again exceeded its API (Academic Performance Index) goal set for last spring’s STAR testing. Students will be treated to lunchtime fun, games and treats, courtesy of ASB and PTSA, to celebrate this accomplishment.

  • It’s Homecoming month! Many Wolverine alums will make their way back to campus to celebrate the great years they experienced at Westview. Parents and students will come together, putting in an impressive number of hours designing and building those incredible homecoming floats.

  • The PUSD College Fair is almost here! On October 22nd, representatives from over 100 schools will assemble on Westview’s campus to participate in the District’s first ever college fair. This is a testament to our widely respected school district and the fine students that our district is turning out.

  • You can get some terrific bargains at the Foundation Rummage Sale on Saturday, October 25, and help out many organizations within Westview while you’re at it. In addition, you can enjoy some good eats while connecting with other members of our community at the Foundation-sponsored Pancake Breakfast that same morning.

  • In addition to Halloween, there are a number of obscure holidays during the month of October we can find excuses to celebrate, including Do Something Nice Day, Take Your Teddy Bear To Work Day, International Moment of Frustration Scream Day, Babbling Day, and my personal favorite, National Chocolate Day (it’s October 28, in case you’re wondering).

My personal celebrations this month will include daughter number two’s 17th birthday, the return of my Westview alum to the roost for a few days, Oktoberfest in memory of my German-born father-in-law, and a visit from my parents. Having my whole family together always seems to bring about at least one good laughing attack, the perfect medicine when things seem overwhelming. And as Woody Allen said: “I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose." I think that’s the kind of laughter we could all use right about now. Here’s hoping you find many reasons to celebrate and lift your spirits throughout the month. Happy October!

PTSA SEPTEMBER ACTIVITIES

The PTSA was hard at work during the month of September on activities in support of our goals and objectives approved at our Association meeting last month. Here’s a summary of some of the things accomplished:

Gifts To School
– The PTSA donated $4000 to Westview to be used for the purchase of laptops for the Counseling Department and support of the Link Crew program. Kudos to Gifts To School chair Lisa Espiritu for her dedication in working with the administration to ensure that these funds were put to use as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Newsletters
– This is our second issue of The View for this school year, and you can look forward to staying on top of what’s happening with information-packed monthly issues, thanks to our exceptional newsletter editor Crystal Ranj. In addition, the PTSA has published the first of several staff newsletters to facilitate communications between our community and staff members. Many thanks to Patsy Romero for her work on this.

Grad Nite
– Plans are already underway for Grad Nite 2009. We have a strong committee of dedicated and enthusiastic parents, led by our fantastic Grad Nite Chair Cindy Kodama. There is still need for many more volunteers. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to create an incredible memory for our graduating seniors.

Thank you also to PTSA board members who work diligently behind the scenes to keep our organization and non-profit status “legit”, especially: Aida Shadfan, Auditor, for completing the most recent audit of PTSA and Grad Nite financial records. Finally, endless thanks goes to our tireless webmaster, Margaret Lupfer, for her superhero attention to detail and timeliness in getting information updated for our Westview community.

SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES FORUM

On November 4, along with casting our vote for the next president of the United States, we will have the opportunity to elect school board representatives for the Poway Unified School District Board of Trustees. Three of the five board seats are up for grabs, with six candidates in the running.

To help voters find out where these candidates stand on issues such as financial, academic and enrollment challenges, Palomar Council, in conjunction with PUSD, is sponsoring a forum. Details of the forum are as follows:

When:

Wednesday, October 15 from 7–8pm

Where:

Carmel Mt. Ranch/Sabre Springs Recreation Center
10152 Rancho Carmel Drive

The forum will be moderated by the League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization that seeks to keep voters informed and get politically active.

RED RIBBON WEEK / CHARACTER COUNTS

Each fall a specific week is chosen in October to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. Westview will be acknowledging Red Ribbon week during the week of October 20-24 as well as implementing character-building ideas during the school day. Red Ribbon week is an opportunity for schools and communities to educate people about the effects of drugs and the advantages of leading a healthy lifestyle. Through various activities, educational lessons and the display of red ribbons we stress the positive promotion of a drug-free life.

Red Ribbon week was originated as a dedication to a DEA Agent named Enrique Camarena (Kiki). He was murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico. What turned out to be a one-day event to honor him became proclaimed by Congress in 1988 as Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon week is in its 23rd year of celebration and hope.

During this week Student Support Services, PTSA and ASB will be sponsoring a variety of fun activities for students. Look for tables at lunch and notices in the bulletin.

“Remember the three Rs: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions.” ~H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

SAFETY AND WELLNESS

Even though we have been back to school for over a month, yesterday was the first day of fall, which marks the “official” end of summer. I’m a traditionalist at heart and can’t get into the swing of school until after Labor Day. This is probably the reason that my September “back to school” article is coming to you in October!

Regardless of my timing I wanted to give you a little back to school information regarding Student Support Services (SSS). For those of you not familiar with Student Support Services, it is a small department newly located in the library that is headed up by Abbie Davis – TOSA (Teacher On Special Assignment) and supported along side her, Pam Roth – Student Support Specialist. Abbie and Pam are dedicated staff whose mission is to connect and support the students on campus.

The Department also supports many events that happen throughout the year including Red Ribbon week, The Great American Smoke Out and Drug Free Prom. This year for the first time, PTSA along with SSS will be offering health, safety & wellness information through a variety of venues that will take place throughout the school year.

Another important way that the SSS team connects with kids on campus is by offering snacks and water. Food is a great excuse for students to stop by and connect with an adult. Just like home the refrigerator always needs restocking and food and water donations are always needed. We can support SSS by donating Albertson’s gift cards, packs of water, peanut butter and jelly, crackers or any prepackaged snack item. Feel free to take your donations into Student Services directly or send me an email to coordinate.

I hope this helps you to better understand Student Support Services here at Westview. Through out the year I will write about different safety and wellness issues that concern our kids and community along with keeping you updated with the events going on in Student Services. If you would like assistance/resources from SSS you can contact them at (858) 780-2000 extension 3292.

Happy fall!

MOCK SAT / ACT TESTING

On November 8, Westview PTSA and Revolution Prep Services are offering mock tests for SAT and ACT. These tests give students a chance to take tests, receive their scores, and learn valuable strategies to utilize before they take the real SAT and ACT tests. These tests do not get sent to colleges and give students a chance to get accustomed to standardized tests prior to taking actual exams. Most colleges will accept either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT. Make sure to check the requirements of the schools on your application list.

We recommend that students take a practice SAT and a practice ACT, and focus on the exam on which they score higher and feel more comfortable.

Guidance counselors are also valuable sources of advice and information about your testing options. Registration is on the PTSA website.

Registration continues until November 5, 2008.
