PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Welcome back to another great year at Westview! One of the best parts of my job is that I get to walk around campus to see all of the wonderful teaching and learning that happens every day. The energy and excitement I see in classrooms and on the practice fields make me very optimistic about the 2008-2009 school year. Students are working hard in class and participating in extra-curricular activities. We continue to have extraordinary support from our parent volunteers. Westview is a great place to be!

I’d like to share some information about our attendance system for those of you who are new Wolverines. Westview does not have a traditional attendance office in which one or two employees handle attendance issues for over 2,400 students. One of the pillars of our mission statement is connectedness, and the Homeroom system was designed to ensure that every family has at least one adult who knows their student personally. Our goal is to create that small school feel that you were familiar with at the elementary level. When you call the homeroom teacher to excuse an absence or request an off-campus pass, you will be speaking to someone who knows you and your child.

Because of this system, Westview has a positive campus culture, good attendance and minimal discipline incidents. However, there may be times when you leave a message and the absence will not be cleared due to technical problems or teacher absence. If you receive an automated message telling you that your child has an unexcused absence, and you believe the message to be in error because you already left a message for the teacher, the problem can quickly be resolved by contacting our attendance secretary at (858) 780-2000 ext 3060.

One of the best aspects of being the principal at Westview is that there’s always a lot of good news to share! Congratulations to Kevin Crowley, Cosette Faivre, Allison Han, Vincent Le, Michael Pan, Steven Xu, Wen Yuan (Willie) Yao, Margaret Zhou, and Jimmy Zhu for being named as semifinalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Competition!

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I am far from a perfect parent. I have made my share of mistakes over the years, not being as consistent as I could be, saying yes when I should have said no, comparing my kids to others, not always shining as that beacon of unconditional love I imagined I would be. My children have made mistakes, sometimes big ones, that have caused me to question my parenting skills. And yet, last week when we dropped our oldest daughter off at college for the very first time, I couldn’t have been more proud of the poised, determined and capable young woman we were leaving behind. As much as I would like to take full credit for that, I realize that it really has taken a village to raise my daughter to this point. Recognition must be given to those teachers who go the extra mile to show they care about their students’ success, coaches who embrace their role not only as a coach of the sport but also of life lessons, and other involved parents who lend encouragement and humor when it is most needed.

This is a prime reason why I choose to be an active participant in our PTSA. In my mind, this organization – the Parent Teacher Student Association – embodies many of those elements necessary for our children’s success as they prepare for life after Westview. On a national and state level, the power of our numbers has a significant impact on issues affecting our families and our children, enabling the PTA to carry out its mission of EVERY child, ONE voice.

At our own Westview level, your PTSA membership demonstrates your support for such programs as college and career readiness, student health and safety, student financial aid, staff appreciation and the National PTA Reflections art program. By joining the PTSA, you become part of the group that brings to our campus senior scholarships, staff grants, student and staff recognitions, our student directory, the monthly newsletter, and a safe and sober Grad Nite celebration for our graduating seniors.

Collectively, we can make a huge difference in the lives of our Westview students. I encourage you to be a part of that influence and get involved, whether it’s by helping out on a committee, volunteering on campus or simply by becoming a PTSA member. Help make our village the best village by a mile!

I am honored to be back for a second term serving as your PTSA President for the 2008-2009 school year and greatly appreciate the PTSA board members who have chosen to volunteer their time and talents this school year. Please let me know if there are any suggestions, questions or concerns that you have. My email address is westviewptsa@mindspring.com. Here’s to our amazing kids!

PTSA AUGUST ACTIVITIES

The PTSA has been hard at work during the month of August getting things ramped up for the start of the school year. Here’s some of what has been happening:

Registration
– A huge thank you goes out to Beverly Lofton, Registration Chair, for coordinating all the volunteers that were needed over six days of registration, and to those of you who helped out. We logged over 650 volunteer hours from registration alone!

School Supplies Drive
– Thanks to your generosity, many supply donations were collected throughout Registration week. With the supply budget being slashed this year, these donations will be valued more than ever by our staff. Thanks again to Beverly Lofton for her efforts in coordinating this drive.

Membership
– Thank you to the 1350 of you who have already become PTSA members! And much appreciation to Colleen Salzetti, VP Membership, for all her efforts in promoting membership in the PTSA.

Staff Appreciation Breakfast
– The staff was welcomed back to school with a wonderful brunch orchestrated by Lisa Smith, our Hospitality Chair extraordinaire. Thank you, Lisa, and to all those who assisted with prep, set up, cooking and serving.

Westview Logo Items
– Have you taken advantage of the opportunity to show your school spirit with a “W” sticker or t-shirt? And do you have the handy learning schedule magnet displayed on your refrigerator? Kudos to Cathy Carpenter, VP Ways & Means, for the awesome job she did in putting together logo items that were sold at Registration, and to Sharon Gruber, Logo Items Chair, for her assistance. It’s not too late to buy! Check the PTSA website for more information.

Volunteers
– Wow! Over 500 of you expressed interest in volunteering during the year, including 30 students who are interested in being involved in our board’s work. Many thanks to Kris Shetter, VP Volunteers, for diligently organizing volunteer information and ensuring that all volunteers have the required clearance to meet district requirements and keep our campus safe.

Thanks also goes to PTSA board members who have worked hard to get our ducks in a row for the new school year, especially: Diana Buell, Treasurer, for her work on the budget; Diana and Gudrun Fichter, Financial Secretary, for their incredible dedication in handling PTSA finances during Registration week; Cathy Carpenter, VP Ways & Means, for overseeing our fundraisers; and Kathy Govea, Corresponding Secretary, for taking care of the paperwork!

REFLECTIONS CHAIR NEEDED - URGENT

The PTSA is still looking for someone to fill the position of Reflections Chair for this school year. Reflections is a national PTA program that promotes the arts in the areas of visual arts, photography, music, dance, film and literature. The chair will be responsible for coordinating student entries, setting up anonymous judging and planning a small recognitions ceremony in late October.

Please contact Allison Aquino Arcio if you can help.

PTSA ASSOCIATION MEETING

Mark your calendars! Our first PTSA Association meeting will be on Tuesday, September 9 at 5:40pm. That’s just prior to our Westview Back-To-School Night, so come early, get your parking spot, and attend the meeting! As members, you will have the privilege of voting on our 2008-2009 Goals, Programs, Budget, and Fundraisers. All of these are posted on our website, so please take a few minutes to look them over before the meeting. Hope to see you there!

REGISTRATION VOLUNTEERS SHINE!

Thank you to the many volunteers who helped at this year's successful registration! Your time is valuable and the school appreciates you giving up part of your summer for registration. A big thanks to volunteer Bev Lofton for coordinating all of the registration volunteers and much more!

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Forgot to turn in your blue "Volunteer Today!" form?

That's ok! You can turn it in any time or just email our volunteer coordinator, Kris Shetter and let her know you want to be on the Westview volunteer team. There's so much going on at our campus that everyone can find a place to help out!

Don't forget, in order to be "volunteer ready" you need a Megan's Law Level 1 clearance and a current TB test on file at the school. For more information go to our website and click "volunteering on campus."

NEED A TB TEST?

PUSD offers free TB testing to help you on your way to volunteering at any PUSD school. To attend the clinic you need a "volunteer confirmation form" which can be obtained by emailing Kris Shetter. A copy of your completed TB test must be brought to each school at which you plan to volunteer. For a complete list of PUSD free clinics go to www.westviewwolverines.com and click "volunteering on campus."

CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION

All 10th, 11th, and 12th graders...Now is the time to apply or reapply to C.S.F. (California Scholarship Federation) for the Fall 2008 term. We will accept applications every Friday in September at lunch in Room K-103. Come early to avoid long lines!

To find out all about CSF, view FAQ's (frequently asked questions), or print out an application, please see the school's website. Please note that we can no longer post the member lists from previous semesters online. We do have the lists posted up in Room K-103 so that students can see the semesters for which they have already qualified.

From now on, we will also be distributing membership cards at the time that the student submits the application. This card serves as the receipt and confirmation that he/she has qualified for this term of membership. Students should keep these cards for their records. Contact Diana Loo, CSF advisor, if you have any questions.

WESTVIEW STUDENTS FEATURED IN MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS EXHIBIT

The photographs of four Westview 2008 graduates will be included in the Museum of Photographic Arts' exhibition Writing with Light, which runs September 13, 2008 though February 1, 2009.

Former students Siera Hyte, Andrew Hall, Lisa Kurth, and Vladimir Staples created the photographs, which focus on the connection between photography and literacy, during the spring of 2008 while enrolled in Westview photography teacher Sarah Layne's AP Studio Art class. Each of the photographs draws on a theme or specific content from a piece of fictional literature that the students had read. The photographs were selected by a jury of museum staff and field professionals. For more information, please visit the museum's website at www.mopa.org.

WESTVIEW GOLD MARCHING BAND BEGINS 2008 SEASON

If you heard music the week before school started, it wasn't your imagination! The 'bandos' were out in full force getting ready for this year's marching band season with a week of preparation at Band Camp. The 2008 performance is titled “Technology” and includes an eBay, virus and AOL segment! The week culminated with a performance and pot luck on Saturday evening for their families to see how much they had accomplished in one short week.

During Band Camp the kids had fun spirit days, learned how to march and play their instruments at the same time (it's not as easy as they make it look), learned their new music, played section team-building exercises like water balloon volleyball and tug of war and ate some great food (including Pick Up Stix). While at Band Camp, making new friends and getting to see old ones is a highlight of being part of Westview Gold.

You'll be able to see their performances during half time at home football games this fall as well as at the exciting band tournaments throughout the county. Go Westview Gold!!

 INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHT

You will come to know that what appears today to be a sacrifice will prove instead to be the greatest investment that you will ever make.

What is Family Connection?

One of the documents you returned during registration for this school year was the “Signing Up for Family Connection” form. Family Connection is a student-centered program which provides information, data and other items related to counseling. Each student on campus will have an account created for them if they returned their form, along with one for each parent/guardian if their contact information was included. Parents may view information in their accounts, but it is only in the student account that any action may be performed. Students may do things such as complete a resume, assessments, access a list of colleges coming for campus visits, access scholarships, view data on college acceptance, find vocational training programs and so much more.

Kathy Bloomfield, the main contact for Family Connection administration, is working on creating new accounts and updating usernames. If you have not yet received information on your account, please be patient as she is creating accounts for the entire freshman class and new students, as well as updating existing accounts.

Attention Senior Parents

The counselors will have an information session for parents of seniors in the Westview Theatre during Back to School Night. Senior Workshops
