PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Happy New Year to our Wolverine Families! It’s hard to believe that it is already 2009!

I trust that your students enjoyed their Winter Break with family and friends, and are now eagerly (that’s me being optimistic) preparing for the culminating projects and assessments of their Term One learning.

Many of you are using the Westview Family Connection website for its career and college information and tools. We are excited to announce that in the spring we will be piloting a new module that will allow students to complete their course requests online. In late February you will be receiving more information about this new system as we continually look for ways to make our processes more family-friendly.

Westview has again been recognized by state and national organizations for its outstanding students! U.S. News and World Report just released its ranking of top American high schools, and Westview has been honored as a Silver Medal school. For more information about this honor, you can visit their website. We have also been named for the third year in a row as a California Business for Education Excellence/Just for the Kids Honor Roll School. Congratulations to our students for their outstanding accomplishments!

As you know, many of our families are being challenged by this difficult economy. We anticipate tough times ahead for the educational community, and we know that some of our students are finding it difficult to pay for even basic supplies due to parents who have lost their jobs. The Westview mission has always opened with the phrase, “Westview is a thriving learning community to which all members feel connected.” During these challenging times, please let us know if your student needs our help. And if you have the resources, your contributions of supplies to classrooms and to students who need an assist will be greatly appreciated. The Westview Family always pulls together to take care of each other, which is one of the many reasons this is such a special community.

May you and yours have a happy, healthy New Year!

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It’s the start of another year, bringing with it the promise of new responsibilities, opportunities, challenges, and hopes. I usually march into January with aspirations for big changes with grandiose effects, but this year I’ve decided to start out on a smaller scale. Finding the whole “big picture” thing to be a little overwhelming these days, I’m going more for the backyard approach. I recently came across a collection of ideas entitled “How To Build Community” that offers some really simple ways to start making a difference:

Turn off your TV * Leave your house * Know your neighbors * Look up when you are walking * Greet people * Sit on your stoop * Plant flowers * Use your library * Play together * Buy from local merchants * Share what you have * Help a lost dog * Take children to the park * Garden together * Support neighborhood schools * Fix it even if you didn’t break it * Have pot lucks * Honor elders * Pick up litter * Read stories aloud * Dance in the street * Talk to the mail carrier * Listen to the birds * Put up a swing * Help carry something heavy * Barter for your goods * Start a tradition * Ask a question * Hire young people for odd jobs * Organize a block party * Bake extra and share * Ask for help when you need it * Open your shades * Sing together * Share your skills * Take back the night * Turn up the music * Turn down the music * Listen before you react to anger * Mediate a conflict * Seek to understand * Learn from new and uncomfortable angles * Know that no one is silent though many are not heard * Work to change this

I’ve shared this list with my kids and have challenged them to pick one opportunity a week to work on. I pass this challenge on to you as well. I fully believe that if we start small, right in our own community, the “trickle-up” effect could be astounding.

So that’s my simple resolution for 2009. Oh, and to walk my dog more often … but I’ll be sure to look up and greet people while I’m doing it. See you around the neighborhood!

PTSA DECEMBER ACTIVITIES

The PTSA was hard at work during the month of December on activities in support of our goals and objectives approved at the beginning of the school year. Here’s a summary of some of the things accomplished:

Grad Nite Holiday Homes Tour – Participants were treated to tours of beautifully decorated homes to help get us in the holiday spirit. Over $2500 was raised in support of Grad Nite 2009. A huge thank you goes out to Patsy Romero and Earleen Seely, the event organizers, and to all those families who offered their homes up to make this event successful.

Student/Staff Recognition Night – Wow! Over 75 students and almost 50 staff members were honored on December 9 in recognition for making a difference in the lives of those around them. Tere Ossa did a wonderful job organizing this program. Thanks, too, to our volunteers who helped on the awards night.

Adopt-A-Family Community Collections drive – Westview came to the rescue once again to help support the hundreds of families in our PUSD community in need this holiday season. Hundreds of dollars in gift cards were collected and seven families were adopted through Westview connections. Thank you to the entire Westview community for your tremendous outpouring of support to make this program successful, and to PTSA Community Concerns Chair Elsie Delletori for all the coordinating she did behind the scenes.

STUDENT/STAFF RECOGNITIONS

The Student/Staff Recognition program is a PTSA-sponsored program that provides a forum twice each school year to honor outstanding students and staff members who make a positive difference in the lives of those around them.

Congratulations to the following students and staff members who were recognized at the fall Student/Staff Recognition awards night on December 9:

After investigating the practices of surrounding schools regarding graduation ceremony practices, the Westview Leadership Cadre has decided to include two student speaker opportunities in the graduation ceremony.

One opportunity will be dedicated to the Senior Class President(s). The other opportunity will be granted based on audition before a committee of staff and senior students.

The Valedictorian will not automatically be assigned a speaking spot but may audition with other seniors. The Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be presented with medals, honored with seats in the front and asked to stand and be recognized during the ceremony.

 INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHT

"The ultimate test of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and moments of convenience, but where he stands in moments of challenge and moments of controversy."
