PRINCIPAL'S
MESSAGE
The
Westview Foundation has supported the needs of Wolverine students since
the school opened in 2002. Now more than ever, your generous donations to
the Foundation have made a significant difference in the kinds of
facilities and materials that can be provided to students.
I’d like to share with you all the things that the Foundation has
provided for your students.
Recently, your gifts have enabled the purchase of 36 computers, several
LCD projectors, and other educational technology for our classrooms. Prior gifts to the Foundation have funded the beautiful new trophy case in
the gymnasium as well as computers for a digital media and graphic design
program.
A few years ago, the Foundation donated money to an ENS fundraising drive
for a ropes course, which was also going to be funded by the money raised
in the annual ENS triathlons. Due to the massive wear and tear
on the frequently-used Fitness Lab, the ENS department has decided that
this money would be more effectively utilized by purchasing new equipment
for this facility. Spin cycles and other new equipment will update
the Fitness Lab for use by all ENS classes as well as numerous other
athletic programs. We look forward to restoring this facility so
that it can continue to nurture a lifelong love of physical health and
fitness.
The generosity of this community plays a key role in the ability of
Westview to provide quality educational facilities and equipment to all
students. I have the best job in the world, because I get to work
with this wonderful team of parents, students and staff on a daily basis. Whether walking through classrooms or attending performances and athletic
events, I am constantly inspired by the growth and energy I see in our
teenagers.
I am especially pleased to recognize the nine Westview students who were
named as National Merit Scholarship Finalists for 2009. Please
congratulate Kevin Crowley. Cosette Faivre, Allison Han, Vincent Le,
Michael Pan, Steven Xu, Wen-Yuan (Willie) Yao, Margaret Zhou, and Jimmy
Zhu. Their academic achievements are impressive and represent many,
many hours of hard work. Congratulations to these terrific
Wolverines!

THANK
YOU VOLUNTEERS!
The
Class of 2011 would like to thank all the parent volunteers who
helped with our recent Winter Formal Dance, Legends of Hollywood.
The
dance would not have been as successful as it was without all the parental
support.
We'd also like to thank our fellow sophomores for placing 2nd
in the air bands competition! Go Class of 2011!

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
My mom likes to periodically send me
inspirational quotes or little suggestions that might make my life
easier. Most of the time I find them amusing. They are my reminder that
no matter how old I get, my mom will never stop being my mom. One she
recently passed my way that stuck with me is: "The trouble with learning
from experience is that you never graduate." Ah yes, how true. Just as
your house will start getting dirty again as soon as you finish cleaning
it or the laundry seems to reproduce in the hamper overnight, life
continues to throw us curve balls to keep us on our toes and force us to
reevaluate our action plans.
Personally, I think this is mostly a good thing. While times are difficult
right now for so many, it presents an opportunity for our children to
experience life through a different set of lens. My daughters really
have only known relative prosperity for themselves and their peers --
acrylic nails, designer jeans, a beautiful school campus, participation
in sports or activities that cost their parents hundreds or even
thousands of dollars. To them, nothing really remarkable but compared to
MY childhood, sort of extravagant.
I’ve often wondered over the years if the pendulum would start to swing
back in the other direction. Be careful what you wish for, right? The
positive spin is that I believe our kids are becoming more appreciative
of what they have and are perhaps modifying their expectations of what
they “need”. In turn, we can reinforce these changing perspectives by
taking a simpler approach -- for example, a “job well done” to recognize
efforts and achievements -- by being okay with the idea that sometimes
just the opportunity to participate is the reward in itself, and by
emphasizing service to our community and to others as a way of keeping a
pulse on what really matters.
As we work to make the most of our current circumstances, I encourage
you to stay informed. A good starting point is our PTSA website, along
with the CA State PTA
and PUSD
websites. They are great places to find information, resources, and
opportunities to contribute. Continue to ask questions, to speak up, and
to look for new ways to solve problems. This is one way to show our kids
that we’ll do whatever it takes to be sure they continue to experience
those advantages that are most important.
As a parent, this learning from experience stuff is definitely an
iterative process. By the time I get through my third daughter I’m
hoping I’ll have it down pretty well. At that point, I’ll most likely be
keeping with my own mom’s methods and sending my girls those periodic
tidbits of knowledge and advice. As they say, once a mother, always a
mother. And that’s a role from which I definitely don’t ever want to
graduate.

PTSA FEBRUARY ACTIVITIES
The
PTSA was hard at work during the month of February on activities in
support of our goals and objectives approved at the beginning of the
school year. Here’s a summary of some of the things accomplished:
Mock Testing – Over 160 students came out on a Saturday morning to take
practice SAT and ACT exams. Information sessions were held for
parents about the college testing process and available prep services. A huge thank you goes out to Cathy Carpenter for coordinating this
program. March 28 is the final opportunity to take advantage of mock
testing this school year. See the PTSA website for more information.
Spa Day Grad Nite Fundraiser – Close to 100 people took advantage of
this opportunity to pamper themselves while benefiting Westview Grad Nite
2009 at the same time. Many thanks to East of Eden Spa in 4S Ranch
for donating all proceeds from this event to
Westview Grad Nite, and to Westview
parent volunteer Debbie Datria for her incredible hard work in making this
happen.
Grad Nite – Grad Nite work parties are underway. Many, many thanks
to all who have shown up to help. Please consider joining in at the
next work party. Log onto the
Grad Nite website
for more information.
Audit – A big thank you also goes out PTSA Auditor Mari Stryjewski for
completing the audits of the PTSA and Grad Nite financials. Your
behind-the-scenes work is greatly appreciated!
TEEN
DRIVING SAFETY WEEK
March 9-13
was Teen Driving Safety Week. Did you know that statistics show that motor
vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for 16 to 19 year olds,
accounting for 40 percent of all teen deaths?
Check out http://impactteendrivers.org
for more information and visit the Teen Driving tab on our PTSA website
for some great resources for both you and your teen.

REFLECTIONS:
WESTVIEW STUDENTS ROCK!
The
PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program for
students, providing opportunities for students to express themselves
creatively through original works of art in the areas of literature,
music, photography, visual arts, dance and film.
This year, approximately
30 Westview students submitted entries of their interpretation of the
theme "Wow!" Of those entries, some were selected to move on to
Palomar Council for judging, and in turn Palomar Council submitted entries
to 9th District PTA for judging.
At the district level, the competition was huge – more than 400 student
entries made it to 9th District from all Council Levels - but only 23
moved on to State...two of them Westview students!
Congratulations to Benjamin Statz and Mark Suennen for receiving
Awards of Merit, both in the Music category, and to Ashley Peterson and
Hayden Boal for receiving Awards of Excellence! Ashley's piece was a
Literature entry and Hayden's was in the film category.
Ashley and Hayden’s entries are now competing on the State Level, and could
possibly even move on to Nationals.
The winners at State Level, as well as the National winners, will be
announced at the PTA Convention in May. We will keep you posted. Again, congratulations to all of you!

MADD "LIVE 2
GRADUATE"
MADD San Diego County
has scheduled a town hall event that will kick off the
countywide “Live 2 Graduate” campaign. The event benefits both
students and their families and is completely put together by high school
students. Those involved include MADD Youth in Action teens, law
enforcement and other experts presenting four powerful skits on
underage drinking followed by breakout conversation tables. Come
support efforts to stop underage drinking in our community.
The event will be held on March 25 from 5:30–7:30pm at the YMCA,
2929 Meade Avenue, San Diego, CA 92116.

JROTC Myth #2: I can't take ROTC because I can't fit it into my
schedule and take college-level courses, too.
Fact: Tell that to the one cadet who was accepted to West
Point and four who earned NROTC scholarships to major universities. A NROTC scholarship to USD is worth $180,000.
The unit held a change of command in January where Cadet Commander Derrick
Caton relieved Cadet Commander Sara Escobedo. Cadet Escobedo will
serve as Cadet Staff Instructor for the remainder of the year in charge of
the NS-1 Academic Curriculum. In the photo, Cadet Commander Caton
presents the Cadet of the Month medal to Cadet Seaman Recruit Ryan Warrick.
The marksmanship team placed second at the state qualifier January 31 and earned a trip to Camp Perry, Ohio for the All Navy JROTC
Championships. The competition took place February 26-28 followed
by an Awards Banquet the last evening. We'll let you know how we did
in the next edition!
Other JROTC events are the Field Meet "Super Bowl" which was
held in Santa Ana on March 7 and the Academic "Brain
Brawl" Championship at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego on
March 21. Westview is one of only five schools in NJROTC Area 11
that qualified for the championship round in academics, field meets
and marksmanship.
In addition to JROTC events, cadets perform many community service events
such as supporting the YMCA with two Phone-a-thons and their "Healthy
Kids Day," trips to support the San Diego Salvation Army and others
such as the Los Penasquitos Elementary School Community Service Project and the
Rancho Bernardo Fight Against Hunger. We have five cadets scheduled
to assist the YMCA's "Ride Across California" during Spring
Break.
JROTC is a citizenship development program designed to develop a higher
degree of personal honor, self-reliance, individual discipline and
leadership. JROTC provides options for cadets to receive free flight
training, personal instruction at universities such as Embry Riddle (paid
for by the Navy) and attend Leadership Academies - programs that make JROTC cadets stand out on college applications.
Visit our
website for more information.

PRIDE
ASB’s PRIDE
(Personal Recognition in Daily Effort) program is garnering more and more
attention from teachers and staff. For January’s PRIDE recognition
day, highlighting the character pillar of Trustworthiness, almost 130
students were nominated. These students were treated to a
certificate, a specially designed T-shirt in the color of the character
pillar, pencil, and most importantly of all, a Subway sandwich.
As stated by Kaitlin Emch, the outgoing ASB PRIDE Commissioner, “I think
that the PRIDE program is an exciting way to value the students who may
not be involved in sports or main events. PRIDE nominees are
students on campus who make a difference through their character and their
actions. It is important that we recognize different types of people
and through this program, that can happen.” Her successor, Nicole Athans has two additional PRIDE recognition days scheduled. In
March, the character pillar of Fairness will be honored. The final
event for the year is scheduled in June and will honor Responsibility.
