PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Westview continues to chart a path to excellence!

I am very proud to announce that an impressive SEVENTEEN (!!!!) Wolverines have been named as semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Please congratulate Allison Chen, Jefferson Chen, Felicia Han, Rose Hill, Ji Huang, Tiffany Hwu, Bonnie Jiang, Charles Lee, Ming Liu, Alice Main, Connie New, Jonathan Olivero, Kyle Plutchak, Eileen Shi, Christine Sun, Emily Teng, and Karl Yang.

Every year, California students in grades 2–11 demonstrate their mastery of academic standards by taking the STAR exams in April. Unlike AP, ACT, SAT and CAHSEE exams, this is the one set of tests that we take as a Westview Team.

We are very proud that Westview students have improved their school Academic Performance Indicator (API) score for the fifth year in a row, from 843 to 848. Congratulations to all of our students and their dedicated teachers for their continued pursuit of academic excellence!

We could not do all that we do without the unfailing support of our parent community. This year, as our school has been devastated by budget and staffing cuts, you have given more than ever. Your generous donations to our Foundation have provided enough money to put badly needed DLP (aka LCD) projectors in every classroom and to keep the library open an extra hour per day on Mondays through Thursdays. We are grateful that there will also be some additional money to add to our classroom instructional supply budgets.

Thank you so much to all of you who have given your time, your money, and your support to making Westview one of the premier schools in San Diego County!

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Defense! Go Wolverines! Go Chargers!

Post Labor Day kick offs, this marks the beginning of football season. Friday nights, Sunday afternoons and Monday nights are taken up with loud hoots and hollers from cheering fans on both sides of the field. This favorite pastime can transform my family’s sedate and tranquil mood to one of anxiety and tension. My sister, who has always been a 49er’s fan, called Sunday afternoon with such defeat and sadness in her voice to announce that her beloved team fell victim with a Hail Mary pass in the final seconds of the game to the Minnesota Vikings. Here comes the mild depression and somber moodiness. That same day the Chargers won against the Miami Dolphins with Rivers taking his 2nd rushing touchdown of his career and Weddle catching that interception into the end zone. Suddenly, voila!! Our home was instantly transformed with shouts of ecstatic happiness and joyful pride.

Could these same feelings of happiness and pride be felt in our PTSA? Why not? We have a qualified team of players (board members and chairpersons) that execute well designed plays just like the Chargers, except instead of playing at the Q, the action happens right here on campus.

Here’s how our play book is written:

● Character Counts – PTSA supports ASB (Associated Student Body)’s PRIDE (Personal Recognition In Daily Effort) program with recipient awards.

● Career and College Readiness – PTSA supports students efforts with job interview clothing and shoes distributed through the Wolverine center.

● Community Concerns – PTSA organizes the Adopt A Family program that provides food and monetary donations for under privileged families in our community.

● Directory – PTSA creates and produces this award-winning resource every year that provides vital information about our staff, faculty and students.

● Foundation – PTSA collaborates with our Foundation that provides the necessary funding for numerous school functions.

● Gifts to School – PTSA provides additional funding for school identified needs that ultimately benefit the student body.

● Grad Nite – PTSA creates and produces this once-in-a-lifetime event for all seniors on graduation night with a safe, alcohol- and drug-free environment.

● Honorary Service Awards – PTSA recognizes the service and dedication of individuals and organizations that have dedicated their time, talents and treasures to Westview by presenting each recipient with an award.

● Hospitality – PTSA provides food and refreshments for: annual staff breakfast, refreshments at Reflections award ceremony, API award treats and test taking incentives.

● Legislation – PTSA participates actively in the legislative process through which public policy decisions are made.

● Mock SAT/ACT Test – PTSA provides 3 tests a year that gives students the opportunity to take the SAT/ACT tests without the scores being released to colleges.

● Newsletter – PTSA creates and provides an online monthly newsletter called “The View” that provides timely information on all PTSA related activities and services.

● Reflections – PTSA’s national, thematic art program, that recognizes student’s artistic expression in 6 categories, winners are recognized at an award ceremony.

● Registration – PTSA organizes and provides all volunteers to assist in all areas of Westview’s registration process.

● Safety and Wellness – PTSA creates and provides a yearly wellness fair that provides health related information for parent education and awareness.

● Senior Scholarships – PTSA selects deserving Westview seniors with an educational scholarship.

● Staff Grants – PTSA grants funding from teacher and staff requests for various classroom and/or educational materials.

● Student/ASB Representation – PTSA supports and welcomes ASB student representatives at each board meeting to keep 2-way communication open and accessible.

● Student/Staff Recognition – PTSA creates and provides 2 award nights per year that recognizes both students and teachers for personal and academic success.

● Web Page – PTSA provides professional, current, and timely information on numerous school-related programs and activities through the Westview website.

As you can see, with these numerous programs our Westview PTSA team is ready to play. As the Chargers need their fans to cheer them on, we need you to become a member of Westview’s PTSA! Join today and become a part of this winning team. Feel the happiness and pride throughout this school year. As Rivers keeps passing and rushing for the Chargers, we’ll keep providing the programs and services listed above for our students, staff and parents to have a winning season!

If you would like more information on any of our programs listed above or are interested in volunteering, please email me at TheArcios@gmail.com

FOUNDATION NEWS

Thank you to all of the families that have donated to the Westview Foundation this year! Through your generosity, the Foundation has raised nearly $60,000 which has been put to use immediately. These funds extended library hours each school day for the remainder of the year; purchased 30 LCD projectors so that each classroom will now have a projector; replacement bulbs and screens for existing projectors; and increased the teacher’s classroom supply budget by nearly ten percent (10%). The Foundation is still working to raise funds to upgrade our library collection, provide additional secretarial and custodial staffing during peak times, and provide document cameras as well as computer and other technology upgrades.

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding donations made to the Foundation in connection with “fair share” contributions so that your child may participate in sports or other school groups. Although your checks may have been made payable to the Foundation, all of your “fair share” payment went to the organization in which your child is participating. None of those funds went into the Foundation general fund.

There also seems to be some confusion regarding how donated funds are utilized at Westview. Westview has a Leadership Cadre comprised of teachers from the various areas on campus. These representatives define and prioritize the needs of the school. These needs are then communicated to the Foundation.

Donations are always welcome.

Thank you again for your continuing support!

RECOGNIZING FLU SYMPTOMS

Because all influenza or “flu” viruses can easily spread from person to person, Poway Unified is asking for your help in reducing the spread of flu in our schools.

Here’s What Parents Can Do To Help:

● Recognize the symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.

● Do not send children to school if they are sick. Children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home. This includes before and after-school programs.

● Make plans now for children who need to stay home. Plan for how children will be cared for at home in case they become ill.

● Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone without using fever-reducing drugs. By keeping children home when they have a fever, we can reduce the number of new people who may become infected.

 ● For more information, visit the PUSD website.

RED RIBBON WEEK
CHARACTER COUNTS

Each fall a specific week is chosen in October to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. Westview will be acknowledging Red Ribbon week during the week of October 19-23 as well as implementing character-building ideas during the school day. Red Ribbon week is an opportunity for schools and communities to educate people about the effects of drugs and the advantages of leading a healthy lifestyle. Through various activities, educational lessons and the display of red ribbons we stress the positive promotion of a drug-free life.

Red Ribbon week was originated as a
dedication to a DEA Agent named Enrique Camarena (Kiki). He was murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico. What turned out to be a one-day event to honor him became proclaimed by Congress in 1988 as Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon week is in its 24th year of celebration and hope.

During this week Student Support Services, PTSA and ASB will be sponsoring a variety of fun activities for students. Look for tables at lunch and notices in the bulletin.

“Remember the three Rs: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions.”   ~H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

2ND ANNUAL PUSD COLLEGE FAIR

The PUSD College Fair will take place on Tuesday, October 20, at Del Norte High School.

Two sets of workshops are scheduled from 6:15-7:00pm and from 7:05-7:50pm. Students and parents will have an opportunity to meet with representatives from over 100 colleges from 6:00-8:30pm in the high school gym.

This is a wonderful opportunity for PUSD high school students (especially 10th, 11th and 12th graders) and their parents to find out more about college opportunities.

Representatives from technical schools, art schools, community colleges and 4-year colleges and universities from throughout the country have committed to participating.

Be sure to mark this date on your calendar and check out the college fair website at www.pusdcollegefair.org.

If you would like to volunteer to help at the College Fair (students and parents are encouraged to volunteer), visit the website for more information.

If you have any questions, please email College Fair Coordinator Colleen Salzetti at pusdcollegefair@san.rr.com.
