PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

San Diego is a beautiful place to live all year long, but it’s especially nice in the Spring. While we enjoy this terrific weather, now is a good time for some annual reminders.

As it warms up, please remind your students to watch out for snakes as they walk to and from school and while on campus. We are located in a canyon area, which means we share our space with some of nature’s more wiggly creatures.

Please also remind them to dress appropriately for school. Most of our students understand the difference between “weekend/beach” vs. “school appropriate” clothing, but some still push the boundaries. The most common violation of dress code is the “Three B’s (bellies, breasts, and buttocks areas)” coverage rule. School clothing should be modest and not be a distraction to the learning environment. Thank you for helping us to keep the focus on learning.

In California, April means “STAR Testing” time. Although this is just our eighth year of existence, Westview has a well-established reputation for academic excellence. The most publicized measure of student achievement is the Academic Performance Indicator (API.) This number demonstrates the degree to which our students have mastered the California State Standards in the areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science, and it is determined by student performance on the STAR Exams.

Despite three years of budget cuts and drastic staffing reductions, Westview has consistently received an API rating as one of the top five “open admission” public high schools in San Diego County, and our scores have continued to climb every year for the past five years. This reputation has a positive impact on college admissions, employment opportunities and property values.

The STAR Exams are different than the other tests that our students take in that while most exams have a high-stakes purpose for individual students, STAR is the exam that requires students to work together as a team. The scores of all 9th, 10th and 11th grade students are combined to create a school’s API score. Students who miss parts of the test or don’t make an effort are still counted and their low scores pull the average down. As we approach our STAR exams later this month, I encourage you to talk to your students about this opportunity to demonstrate their Wolverine Pride and continue to show the world why Westview students are second to none!

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The good news is that the best season of your life can be ahead of you no matter what your age or circumstances – if you choose to make it so – because 90 percent of your potential is not only untapped and unused, but also undiscovered. That’s not just good news, it’s incredible news!
                                   Tim Hansel

In my job, I was asked to read a book called Life’s Greatest Lessons written by Hal Urban. After each chapter there would be a weekly discussion among our co-workers. The quote listed above is from the first chapter and it seemed to jump out at me from the page and as I write this, it still affects me. How? with Hope and Possibilities.

When I was asked to become a nominee for President of our PTSA, I was dumbfounded and surprised. I had never been a president before, so how could I do this? It was scary, nerve-wracking and yet at the same time exciting and flattering. When the voting was done, I looked around the room and I knew that I would have a team of incredibly supportive people around me that would help me get the job done. Their hope for me has given me wonderful possibilities in my life that I didn’t even know existed.

Here’s just a few of them: The possibility of having a network of amazing people to call or text at a moment’s notice to answer a question and then getting that information quickly and accurately. The possibility of knowing my son’s principal on a first name basis and not because of any discipline issues, but because she wants my feedback! The possibility of knowing what’s happening at my child’s school way before it happens. Wouldn’t you like to be able to call these your possibilities too?

So I ask you now, as someone asked me, can you bring hope and possibilities to Westview as a volunteer with PTSA? You won’t be alone and then you can start using that 90 percent of your untapped potential.

Here are some current volunteer possibilities for your consideration:

NJROTC TOPS THE $1,000,000 DOLLAR MARK

Westview's NJROTC Commanding Officer, Sheridan Martini, was recently awarded an Air Force ROTC scholarship which put the unit over the one million dollar mark for scholarship money over the past two years. The way it's looking right now, next year's crop of seniors may top the million dollar mark themselves - I hope so because they are most deserving!

The unit's Academic Team has been active this Spring finishing in the top 15 of Division II NJROTC units nationwide in an Academic Competition sponsored by the College Options Foundation. Division II teams are the more urban units with higher school populations. The team also finished sixth in the NJROTC Area 11 Academic "Brain Brawl" Championship held recently here in San Diego. Congrats to our unit's hard working "brainiacs" - and I use that term with affection.

Two members of the Westview marksmanship team, Connor Oberrick and Derek Minear, competed in the Navy JROTC Service Marksmanship Championship held at Camp Perry, OH in February. Both Connor and Derek qualified at the State Competition where Westview's four person team placed second.

The Annual NJROTC Ball was held at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club where it was an excellent evening of awards, fun and plenty of time on the dance floor. The unit has a lot more "b-boys" showing their stuff along with cadets entertaining the crowd with their singing and guitar playing skills during dinner.

The unit has performed hundreds of community service hours the past month supporting the YMCA and San Diego Food Bank. April events include supporting the Deer Canyon Elementary School Easter Egg Hunt, the YMCA's Healthy Kid's Day and Sundance Elementary School's Silent Auction Fundraiser.

DMV

April is “Donate Life Month”

Every day there are thousands of people in the United States waiting for a second chance at life, and unfortunately, over 21 percent of them reside in California. April is “Donate Life Month” in California , and the California Department of Motor Vehicles is celebrating its partnership with the state authorized registry program, Donate Life California. This month, the DMV would like to remind residents that they have an opportunity to give life and hope to others by making their wish of becoming an organ and tissue donor known through the Donate Life California Donor Registry.

There are currently more than 6 million Californians who are enrolled in the Donate Life California registry—making the state the highest enrollment of a donor registry in the U.S. 98 percent of those who register their decision to be an organ and tissue donor in California do so through the DMV.

It is easy to sign up as an organ and tissue donor through the DMV. In the past, California driver license and identification card holders signed a donor card and placed the pink “donor” sticker on their license or ID, which served as an important symbol of their intent. However, simply doing this did not place them on any list or registry to inform anyone else of that intent. Today, by signing up as an organ and tissue donor through the DMV, your name is placed directly in to the Donate Life California Registry - guaranteeing your wish to become a donor upon death. With the Donate Life California Registry, your desire to donate is stored in a secure, confidential database. The information is accessible only through authorized organ and tissue recovery personnel.

One organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people, and tissue donation can enhance the lives of another 50 people. Since the Donate Life California Registry was introduced in 2005, more than 900 lives have been saved through organ donation, and more than 30,000 people have been healed through tissue donation from donors who had signed up on the registry.

Organs for life-saving transplants include heart, liver, kidneys, lung, pancreas and small intestine. Examples of tissues that are often needed to save or enhance someone’s life include cornea, heart, valve, bone tissues, and skin grafts. Listed below are a few facts about organ and tissue donation that you may not know:

  • Thousands of Californians wait for a second chance at life. You can give them hope today by making your decision known in your Identification card or driver license.

  • Californian's make up about 21 percent of those waiting for an organ transplant across the nation.
  • Of those waiting, one out of three will die due to a lack of life-saving donors.

  • Organs and tissues are distributed fairly and equitable and the decision is based on medical criteria only.

  • Your medical care and/or funeral arrangements will not be affected by your decision to donate.

  • There are no costs to you or your family to donate.

  • People of all ages and medical histories can sign up to be potential donors.

  • All major religions support or permit donation.

On average, 30,000 donors each week sign up to become a donor through the DMV’s driver license and ID card application and renewal process, and you can become one of them. If you are interested in giving the gift of life and would like to become an organ and tissue donor, there are a few options for you on how to sign up. First, you can wait until you apply for or renew your driver license or identification card, and check the “yes” box on your renewal notice or application. The other option is to visit the DMV Web site at www.dmv.ca.gov and click the Organ and Tissue Donor Registry link under the Other Services option on the homepage. From there, click the Donate Life California link, and you will directly be taken to the Donate Life California Web site www.donateLIFEcalifornia.org
where it gives you the option to sign up to become and organ and tissue donor.

For more information about signing up to be an organ and tissue donor through the DMV, please visit www.dmv.ca.gov. For other information regarding Donate Life California , please visit www.donateLIFEcalifornia.org.
