Are there college benefits? Yes, by participating in a JROTC program, you can be recommended for an ROTC scholarship and/or nominated for an appointment to one of the service academies. You must maintain good grades, and, of course, score well on the SAT/ACT. Do I get high school credits? Yes, you get PE credit and elective credit. Taking JROTC for two terms exempts you from ENS 3-4, therefore you only have to take the ENS 1-2 curriculum for the State required Health package.
Absolutely not, just enjoy the experience of JROTC.
- Monday we have PT (physical training), which involves a stretch work-out including push-ups and sit-ups, then we jog for cardiovascular improvement. Occasionally we will play a sport. - Tuesday and Wednesday we enjoy an academic enhancement. In Naval Science 1 (1st year Cadets) we learn the basics, such as military customs and courtesies, rank recognition, knot tying, flag folding, wearing a uniform properly (in conformance with published grooming standards), and important concepts such as Leadership and Responsibility. The upperclassman learn all about the importance of SEAPOWER throughout history, Oceanography, Astronomy, Maritime Geography , and more in the area of Leadership/Followership. - Thursday is our uniform inspection day. Each Cadet is required to wear their uniform for the graded inspection and the "Sharpest Cadet" is recognized. - Friday is Drill day. We practice marching and responding to commands as a TEAM (Platoon/Squad) in preparation for competitions and special events.
Where's all the fun stuff? Everything in ROTC really happens after school. Our teams include: Athletics, Academics, Orienteering, Armed Drill, Unarmed Drill, Marksmanship, and Color Guard. Being on a team is a good way to make friends and get recognition. Cadets are recognized through ribbons and medals awarded to them for participating or competing in events. Once a ribbon has been awarded once, every consecutive time it is awarded with a bronze, silver, or gold star. Occasionally cadets will play sports during the class period.
