Wordly Wise Lesson 12 List (for the Week of
February 13th and February 27th)
The words being tested are in bold and underlined; the definitions follow.
The test for this will be given on Friday, March 2nd. Each of the
definitions for each of the words will be dictated in their entirety twice; the
students must write the word that matches those definitions.
- ability—power or knowledge; skill.
- amiable—friendly; good natured and
pleasant.
- bliss—complete joy or happiness.
- caress—to touch in a tender or loving
way; a tender or loving touch or hug.
- clutch—to grasp or hold tightly to; the
part of a machine that connects and disconnects the power from the rest of
the machine.
- coax—to persuade or urge in a gentle
way.
- furious—very, very angry; very fast,
strong, or wild.
- gesture—a movement of the arm or hand;
something done to show one’s feelings; to make a movement of the arm or the
hand.
- mope—to be sad and gloomy; to lose
interest in the things that usually bring pleasure.
- prefer—to like better; to choose first.
- recover—to get back to a normal state;
to get well again; to get back to what was lost or stolen.
- replace—to take the place of; to put
back in place.
- request—to ask for; the thing asked for.
- separate—to set or keep apart; not
together; not joined.
- shun—to take special pains to avoid; to
keep away from.
