Depression Books
A Relentless Hope: Surviving the Storm of Teen Depression, by Gary E. Nelson. Cascade Books: 2007.
A realistic book that teaches, as a parent, you can't "fix" your child's depression, you can only work to understand it. The author has a son who suffered from depression. Therefore, much of the information is first-hand. He uses metaphors to help the reader understand the teen's point-of-view as well as the parents.
When Nothing Matters Anymore: A Survival Guide for Depressed Teens, by Bev Cobain and Peter S. Jensen. Free Spirit Publishing: 2007.
This book is split into two parts. The first is statistics about depression, the links between depression eating disorders and suicide, and the causes and types of depression. The second part covers the possible treatment options for depression. This book is teen friendly, have your children read it too. Overall, the perfect mix of compassion and empowerment with accurate information.
