Paragliding is considered an extreme sport and should not be undertaken without proper instruction. I started my lessons in August, 1999, and received my P1 (beginners) rating in October. With continued instruction I worked toward and received my P2 (Novice) rating in February, 2000. These first two ratings (skills, theory class, and flights) are achieved under direct supervision of a qualified instructor. While this is a slower pace than someone who could spend everyday at Torrey Pines Gliderport working on the skills required, it was a pace that I was comfortable with. I am now able to fly without direct supervision which allows me to go with friends and fly the different sites around San Diego and elsewhere. I worked hard, but cautiously, and earned my P3 (intermediate) rating in March 2001, and am now a P4 (advanced) flyer as of May 2004. I have flown in several countries; Mexico, Italy, Israel, and the United States.
