EAGLE AND HIGH PEAK GOLD MINES OF JULIAN To help give the students a feeling of what it might have been like to mine for gold just after the gold rush period, we take a trip up to the gold mining town of Julian, California. A town where the old Butterfield Express Stagecoach Line carried people and equipment to and from cities in the East, and on down to San Diego. The miners mining this mountain used shafts and tunnels to fine the quartz veins that held gold. While the Eagle and High Peak Mines were once two separate mining operations, the need for metal and machine for the war effort caused the merging of the two mines. Tunnels were then dug to connect the mines as mining continued. After a while the cost of recovering the small amount of gold left in the mountain caused the mine to close. Today the owner graciously opens his mine for tours to individuals and to 4th graders around San Diego County. EAGLE AND HIGH PEAK MINE THUMBNAILS As part of our study of the gold rush, we visited gold mines in Julian, California. These are the pictures of our trip. |
