Keep the read aloud sessions short to begin with and gradually
extend them as children develop attention spans.
Make sure your listener can hear you.
Try to minimize distractions.
Do some creative "editing."
Skim the material in advance and omit long passages that might be boring
and aren't important to the outcome of the story.
Read clearly and define unfamiliar words.
Read slowly enough for your child to form mental images of what he or
she is hearing.
Use expression in your voice.
Remember that reading aloud becomes easier with practice.
The most important thing is to read aloud, not what you read or how you
read.
Don't use books or storytime as a threat: "No story tonight if you
don't brush your teeth." Using books in this way will make your child lose
positive feelings about them.
Have fun! Make this an enjoyable time for you and your child.
