CLASS POEMS TO RECITE

Rainy Nights

I like the town on rainy nights
When everything is wet,
When all the town has magic lights
And streets of shining jet!

When all the rain about the town
Is like a looking-glass,
And all the lights are upside-down
Below me as I pass.

In all the pools are velvet skies,
And down the dazzling street,
A fairy city gleams and lies
In beauty at my feet.

Irene Thompson

MacBeth

"DOUBLE, DOUBLE TOIL AND TROUBLE,
FIRE BURN AND CAULDRON BUBBLE.
FILLET OF FENNY SNAKE,
IN THE CAULDRON BOIL AND BAKE.
EYE OF NEWT AND TOE OF FROG,
WOOL OF BAT AND TONGUE OF DOG.
....AND NOW ABOUT THE CALDRON SING
LIKE ELVES AND FAIRIES IN A RING,
ENCHANTING ALL THAT YOUR PUT IN."

Merry Christmas

I saw on the snow
when I tried on my skis
the track of the mouse
beside some trees.

Before he tunneled
to reach his house
he wrote "Merry Christmas"
in white , in mouse.

I Have a Dream

I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day every
valley shall be exalted. . . .So let
freedom ring. . . .From every mountainside,
let freedom ring. And when we allow freedom
to ring, when we let it ring from every village ,
from every hamlet, from every state and
from every city ,we will be able to speed
up the days when all of God's children . . .
will be able to join hands and sing. . .
"Free at last. Free at last! Thank God
almighty we are free at last.

Martin Luther King Jr.

The Germ

A Mighty creature is a germ,
Though smaller than the pachyderm
His customary dwelling place
Is deep within the human race.

His childish pride he often pleases
By giving people strange diseases.
Do you, my poppet, feel infirm?
You probably contain a germ.

By Ogden Nash

WESTWARD HO!

Pioneers headed west for many reasons
Traveling rough roads in all seasons
Crossing rivers and prairie lands
Cloud-capped mountains and drifting sands

Walking, riding, standing tall
Answering nature's beck and call
Pioneers set out with courage to spare
Spurred on by dreams of a better life there

DREAMS
by Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
