G.A.T.E. at the District Level

The overall goal of the Poway Unified G.A.T.E. Program is to equip each student with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for becoming a self-actualized learner, and for leading a productive and personally satisfying life.

To do this, our objectives include the following:

  • Provide a strong background and mastery of basic skills
  • Address individual needs
  • Develop higher level thinking skills
  • Foster a strong sense of self
  • Develop interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Engage in problem solving processes
  • Encourage enthusiasm for life-long learning.
Goals for Gifted Students

Each student is expected to meet or exceed grade level standards in the core subjects: Language Arts and Mathematics.

In addition, all G.A.T.E. students should be encouraged and supported to demonstrate the following:

Skills
  • Perform at or above grade level in all basic skills areas (including technology and research skills)
  • Use critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Develop strong communication skills
  • Utilize strong organization, time management, and study skills
Knowledge
  • Apply skills and knowledge in area(s) of expertise
  • Become self aware and accept both areas of giftedness and areas of weakness
  • Expand exploration in all content areas
  • Be prepared for advanced instruction at the secondary level
Attitudes
  • Possess an enthusiasm for learning
  • Display academic independence (self directed, resourceful, and confident)
  • Be willing to take risks
  • Be tolerant of self and others
  • Demonstrate leadership ability, particularly in the area of personal expertise
District Advisory Committee
The District Advisory Committee (DAC) consists of a parent representative from each school.  Goals and objectives of the committee include: 
  • Advise the central office on program development, planning, implementation and evaluation as required by state law.
  • Act as regional liaisons to school sites for development of their gifted programs.
  • Act as resource persons for parent meetings at the school sites.
  • Review program objectives, activities, and projects in order to share that information at the school sites.
  • Sustain the mission of All Students Learning ... whatever it takes!
