Azureus
Azureus
Physical Description
The azureus are a species of poison dart frogs that are very bright in color. They are one and a half inches long. They are most often bright pink, red blue, gold or purple.
Habitat
They live in Central America and South America, ranging from Costa Rica to Brazil. They are a tropical frog, therefore they have small geographic range.
Hunting/Feeding Characteristics
As most frogs, azureus eat mostly insects such as flies, beetles, and small crickets.
Special Adaptations You would think that because of their bright color and small size the azureus would be an easy source of food for larger animals. They look harmless, but today the species of poisonous frogs in the Amazon area have very few predators because of their toxic skin. The have adapted to their environment full of predators by producing poison that coats them and gets into the mouth of any possible predators, giving them the luxury to stay out in the daytime and look for possible mates without fear.
Interesting Facts
It has been misconceived that the tribes of the Amazon used azureus' poison in arrows, and they were inaccurately called poison arrow frogs for awhile. In the early 1980's though, they were corrected since the tribes in the Amazon use the frog's poison for their blow gun darts, giving them the common name poison dart frogs.
