Physical Description
These seahorses range in length from 1.5 inches to 14 inches from head to tail. It is easy to distinguish the males from the females, because the males have a pouch below the chest area. Orange seahorses look like they are swimming in an upright position. They have a curled tail and keep their chest forward. They have a long snout that points downward.
Habitat
They live in the deep sea among the seaweed. They are salt-water fish, and spend most of their time in the kelp bed where the get their food.
Hunting/Feeding Characteristics
Seahorses have a long snout that acts as a sucker to filter out their food. They suck in and filter out such foods as plankton and ghost shrimp. Seahorses have no teeth and swallow their food whole.
Special Adaptations The body of a seahorse is heavily armored against predators. The have developed the ability to camouflage themselves as well to escape danger. Some scientists believe that seahorses are genetic leftovers from prehistoric times because of their peculiar appearance and swimming style.
Interesting Facts
The orange seahorse is a very interesting creature. Unlike most pouched creatures, the seahorse pouch is on the male, and they carry the babies during the growth period.
